Dragons end regular season with 14-7 loss at Hillsdale
Tiffin University (21-33) fell in its last scheduled game of 2010 14-7 to Hillsdale, with errors once again spoiling a strong offensive outing. The Dragons committed 4 errors leading to 7 unearned runs. The Dragons led 4-3 heading to the bottom of the fourth inning when Hillsdale scored 7 runs to take a lead they never relinquished. Kyle Blackford took the loss. Ty Blake set a new single season record with his 76th hit as he had 2 hits in the game while Devin Rudolph had 3 more hits with a double to expand on his lead as the national batting leader with a .529 average. Corey Hornyak had 3 hits while Colin Lowe had 3 hits with a double and home run for 3 RBI. Jason Bailey drilled a two-run home run and Tom Touris had 2 hits.
Errors plague Dragons in twinbill sweep by Chargers
Tiffin University (21-32) saw its playoff chances jeopardized by errors and unearned runs as they dropped two games on the road to Hillsdale 13-12 and 8-5. The Dragons allowed 6 unearned runs in game one, committing 5 errors in the field. Jordan Liette took the loss in relief, entering the game with a 12-11 lead in the 7th inning but failing to pick up the save. Bobby Mullin and Pat Curtin had 3 hits each, while Jason Kulp and Colin Lowe had 2 hits each with 2 RBI. Lowe had a double and triple, while Mullin and Kulp also had doubles. Dragons drop two in poor showing at Ashland
Tiffin University (21-30) got poor starting pitching in both games at Ashland, falling 10-7 and 14-5. In the opener, Trevor Woodjetts lasted just 2.1 innings and allowed 8 earned runs as Ashland tallied 7 runs in the second inning in jumping out to a 9-1 lead. TU had 12 hits but 10 were singles. The Dragons had the tying run at the plate in the 7th inning but hit into a game-ending double play. Devin Rudolph had 4 hits with a double and home run for 4 RBI while Ty Blake had 2 hits. In game two, DJ Hickle lasted one-third of an inning and allowed 6 earned runs while reliever Kyle Klinker followed with 7 more earned runs over 2 innings of work as Ashland led 14-4 after three innings. Dragons' Blake ties doubles mark in 22-9 pounding of Oilers
Tiffin University (21-28) totaled 29 hits, highlighted by a 7-run 5th inning, as TU rocketed past Findlay 22-9 on Senior Day. Jason Higgins got the win after 3.1 innings of relief during which he allowed no earned runs, but Ty Blake collected 4 hits for 3 RBI, including his 22nd double to tie Paul Robbins' school record. Jordan Chiero had a mammoth game, drilling 3 home runs along with 2 singles for 6 RBI, while Pat Curtin had 4 hits with a double for 2 RBI. Jason Bailey had 2 hits with a double, Corey Hornyak had 2 hits with a double, Devin Rudolph had 3 hits with a double for 2 RBI, Colin Lowe had 3 hits with a double, and Val Helldobler had 2 hits.
Dragons take two from Oilers
Tiffin University (20-28) got two wins over Findlay, with Ty Blake having a monster double header that featured 7 hits, 4 doubles, and a home run. In a 14-7 victory in the opener, Blake had 4 hits with 3 doubles and a home run for 3 RBI, making a winner of Donnie Smith. Smith went the distance for the win. TU banged out 18 hits in jumping out to a 9-0 lead. Corey Hornyak had 2 doubles for 2 RBI while Devin Rudolph had 3 hits with a double. Jason Kulp had 3 hits with a double for 2 RBI, Pat Curtin had 3 hits for 3 RBI, Colin Lowe had 2 hits, and Jason Bailey added 2 RBI.
In game two, Curtin also went 7 innings and allowed 3 earned runs in a 7-4 victory. TU scored 5 runs in the third inning to take the lead. Blake had 3 more hits with a double while Lowe had 2 hits for 4 RBI. Hornyak added 3 hits and Rudolph had 2 hits with a double.
Dragons drop two to St. Joseph's
Tiffin University (18-28) played a variety of players in two losses at St. Joseph's, falling 6-5 in 8 innings and 9-3 in the nightcap. Derek Shafer took the loss after 2 innings of relief in game one, as TU scored 2 runs in the 7th to tie the game before allowing a solo home run in the bottom of the 8th for the loss. TU allowed 5 unearned runs in the loss. Cole Blake had a double but TU managed only 3 hits. In the second game, Kyle Klinker took the loss after 3 innings of work. Anthony Thomas had 3 hits while Michael Dushane had 2 hits.
Dragons hold on to earn split with Lakers
Tiffin University (18-26) got a solid 6 innings from Trevor Woodjetts and a save from Jordan Liette in a 7-6 win over Grand Valley State in game two. TU got a 3-run home run from Ty Blake in the bottom of the 5th inning and then held on as the Lakers tried to rally in the 7th inning. Blake had a big game, collecting 3 hits with a triple and home run for 4 RBI while Jason Bailey had 2 hits and Pat Curtin drove in two runs. In the opener, Kyle Klinker got off to a rough start, allowing 4 runs in one-third of an inning en route to a 14-7 loss. TU trailed 4-0 before coming to bat and, despite chipping away at the lead throughout the game, could not overcome a 10-4 deficit later in the game. Bailey had 3 hits with a triple for 2 RBI while Devin Rudolph had 2 hits with a double for 2 RBI. Corey Hornyak and Jordan Chiero had 2 hits, with Chiero and Ty Blake getting doubles. Colin Lowe also drilled a home run.
Dragons fall 1-0 in tight pitchers duel
Tiffin University (17-25) got a strong pitching outing from Kyle Blackford but it wasn't enough as they fell 1-0 to Wayne State in their third game of the weekend with the Warriors. Blackford went 6 innings and allowed just one earned run on a sacrifice fly in the 4th inning. TU was kept off the board by the Warriors's Brady Cooper, who fanned 11 over 9 innings.

Tiffin University (17-24) improved their April record to 11-2, using pitching and hitting to earn a 3-2 and 12-7 sweep of Wayne State. In the opener, Donnie Smith went 6.2 innings and fanned 7 in a strong outing while Jordan Liette got the save. Ty Blake and Colin Lowe had 2 hits while Jason Kulp also had 2 hits with a triple. In game two, TU turned up the offense, using a 7-run 4th inning en route to the win. Pat Curtin got the mound win after 4.1 innings of work, while Devin Rudolph had 2 hits with a double for 4 RBI. Tiffin University (15-24) used a 22-hit attack to smash past Lake Erie 23-5, helping Lonny Allen reach his 400th career victory in resounding fashion. DJ Hickle got the win, pitching 7 innings and fanning 10, but it was the Dragons bats that made the biggest mark. Jordan Chiero had a monster game, getting 4 hits with a double and home run for 9 RBI, while Bobby Mullin had 4 hits with a double and home run for 2 RBI. Pat Curtin had 3 hits and 3 RBI, Colin Lowe had 2 doubles for 3 RBI and Nathan Mace had 2 hits for 4 RBI. KC Weber added 2 hits and Jason Bailey had a double.
Dragons sweep Hillsdale to reach .500 in GLIAC
Tiffin University (14-24) used big innings to catapult past Hillsdale, winning 8-6 and 9-4 to reach .500 in the GLIAC (11-11). In the opener, Kyle Klinker allowed 3 earned runs in 6 innings and Jordan Liette got the save in the win. Pat Curtin had a big game, stroking 3 hits with a double and grand slam while Corey Hornyak added 3 hits. Ashland offense pounds Dragons 15-2
Tiffin University (12-24) could not contain Ashland's offense in the third game of the weekend, as the Eagles beat TU 15-2 behind a 22-hit attack. Brad Davis started and took the loss, allowing 6 earned runs in 2.1 innings of work. Ashland opened the game with an 11-0 lead after three innings. Devin Rudolph had 3 hits while Ty Blake had 2 hits with a double. Corey Hornyak also had 2 hits and Val Helldobler added a double.
Pistorio's walk-off caps wild twinbill sweep of Ashland
Tiffin University (12-23) got tons of offense in two victories over Ashland, capping the sweep with a dramatic 3-run walk-off home run by Chris Pistorio in game two. TU opened the second game by taking a 10-4 lead but could not hold it, allowing 5 runs in the top of the 7th inning to tie the score at 14-14. Pistorio drilled the first pitch he saw for a three-run bomb to win the game. Jordan Liette got the win in relief. Jason Bailey had a huge game, stroking a double, triple, and home run for 5 RBI, while Jordan Chiero had 2 hits with a home run for 5 RBI. Dragons score late runs to notch doubleheader sweep of Findlay
Tiffin University (10-23) won in dramatic fashion in both games at Findlay, scoring 5 runs in the 7th inning to send the game into extra innings before winning in the 9th inning 12-11 in game one. Jordan Liette got the win after 3 innings of relief as TU battled back from a 10-5 deficit in the 7th. Devin Rudolph had 3 RBI with 2 hits including a triple, while Val Helldobler also had 2 RBI with 2 hits. Ty Blake and Corey Hornyak also had 2 hits with doubles while Jason Kulp and Colin Lowe alsoh ad 2 hits.
In game two, the Dragons broke a 6-6 tie with 8 runs over the final two innings. Trevor Woodjetts pitched well, allowing just 2 earned runs over 7 innings of work. Tiffin University (8-23) tallied 19 runs but it didn't matter as they fell to Saginaw Valley State 30-19 in a game that featured 58 hits and 7 errors. The Dragons jumped out to a 10-2 lead but never got on track on the mound, breaking down in the 5th inning when they allowed 14 runs. Travis Colliver took the loss after allowing 7 earned runs in one-third of an inning. Devin Rudolph had a monster game, drilling 3 home runs with a double for 8 RBI, while Val Helldobler also had 5 hits with a home run. TU trailed twice by 6 runs in the opener due to 4 errors early in the game, but came back. TU took the lead on Corey Hornyak's mammoth 450 foot home run, capping a four-run 5th inning. Hornyak finished with 3 hits and 2 home runs for 4 RBI, while Jason Bailey also had 2 hits with a home run for 2 RBI. Donnie Smith got the win, allowing 5 earned runs in 6 innings. Jason Kulp had 2 doubles, Colin Lowe had 3 hits with a double, and Ty Blake and Pat Curtin had doubles.
In game two, Curtin tossed a gem, going the distance and allowing 6 hits while allowing 2 earned runs. TU broke open a close game with 4 runs in the 6th inning. Dragons fall in 9th inning in game three thriller with Lakers
Tiffin University (6-20) were undone by 6 errors in game three against Grand Valley State, falling 5-4 in the 9th inning. Trailing 4-2 entering the 9th inning, Jason Kulp drilled a two-run home run to tie the score, but two errors in the bottom of the inning gave GVSU an unearned run and the victory. Kyle Blackford took the loss after 2.1 innings of relief. Kulp had 2 hits for 3 RBI, while Devin Rudolph had 2 hits with a double. Jason Bailey also homered.
Dragons sweep 12th-ranked Lakers behind strong pitching
Tiffin University (6-19) got strong pitching from Donnie Smith and Pat Curtin, beating 12th-ranked Grand Valley State on the road 7-2 and 1-0. In the opener, Smith went 7 innings and allowed just 3 hits in a dominating performance, allowing only a two-run HR. TU opened with 3 runs in the first and tacked on 3 more runs in the 7th inning to put the game away. Devin Rudolph had 3 hits with 2 doubles for 3 RBI, while Jason Kulp also drove in three runs with 2 hits. Jason Bailey had 2 hits and Ty Blake added a double.
In the nightcap, Curtin went 7 innings and scattered 5 hits in the shutout. TU scored its lone run in the 5th inning as Bailey singled home Jordan Chiero after a leadoff double. Rudolph added 2 more hits while Val Helldobler also doubled.
Warriors hold Dragons bats in check in sweep
Tiffin University (4-19) got solid pitching performances from Trevor Woodjetts and Kyle Blackford but c
ould not get enough run support, as Wayne State won 5-4 and 3-1 in GLIAC action. In the opener, Woodjetts allowed 5 earned runs in 6 innings. The Dragons opened down 4-0 and tried to come back, scoring 2 runs
in the 7th inning but coming up short. Devin Rudolph drilled a two-run home run along with a single, while Colin Lowe and Pat Curtin also had two hits. In the nightcap, Blackford allowed 2 runs in 4 innings. Rudolph had two more hits but overall the Dragons mustered just six singles in the game.
Colliver's gem secures TU's 7-5 win over Northwood
Tiffin University (4-17) trailed 4-0 in the second inning, but Travis Colliver's 6.2 innings of one-run relief gave the team a chance to get back in the game as the Dragons eventually won 7-5 against Northwood. The Dragons chipped away at the lead and pushed across 3 runs in the 7th inning to take the lead. Jordan Liette picked up the save, recording the last two outs as Colliver picked up the win. Ty Blake had 2 doubles for 2 RBI while Tom Touris also had 2 hits. Jason Bailey drove in the go-ahead run with a double while Jason Kulp also had a double.
Dragons pitching struggles in sweep by Northwood
Tiffin University (3-17) had the offense working again in their home opener but could not get solid pitching in either game of their doubleheader with Northwood, falling in the opener 14-11 and in the nightcap 11-9. In the first game, TU and Northwood traded shots early but the Dragons rallied to hold a four-run lead in the sixth inning. Northwood came back to tie the game in the sixth inning but the Dragons answered with a 3-run home run by Pat Curtin to take a 11-8 lead into the seventh inning. Things fell apart in the seventh, though, as the Dragons bullpen gave up 6 earned runs in 1.1 innings of work to take the loss. Kyle Blackford was the losing pitcher in relief. Jason Bailey had 3 hits with a double for 2 RBI, while Ty Blake, Corey Hornyak, Colin Lowe, and Curtin all had two hits.
In the nightcap, the Dragons trailed 9-1 to start the game but came roaring back in the fifth and sixth innings, tallying 5 runs in the sixth inning to tie the score at 9-9 heading to the seventh. Northwood rallied to score two runs to win the game, making a loser of Jason Higgins after 2.1 innings of relief. Lowe added 3 hits with a double for 2 RBI while Val Helldobler had 2 hits for 2 RBI, Devin Rudolph had 2 hits, and Tom Touris had a double.
Dragons fail to hold two late leads in doubleheader loss
Tiffin University (3-15) held late leads in both games at Saginaw Valley State but could not get wins in either game, falling in the opener 10-9 in 8 innings and losing the nightcap 7-4. In the opener, TU trailed 7-2 but roared back to take a 9-7 lead in the bottom of the 8th inning. A two-run single with two outs and two strikes gave the Cardinals the victory. Jordan Liette took the loss in relief, allowing 2 unearned runs over 2 innings of work in relief of Donnie Smith, who tossed 5.2 innings and allowed 6 earned runs. Smith tosses gem but suffers 2-0 setback
Tiffin University (3-13) dropped a 2-0 decision to 15th-ranked Florida Tech despite a stellar effort from Donnie Smith. Smith went 7 innings and fired a four-hitter, allowing just one earned run. Florida Tech scored one run in the second inning and one in the third inning and made it stand up despite being outhit by TU 7-4. Ty Blake had 3 hits for TU, as the Dragons managed no extra base hits despite hitting the ball hard all day.
Dragons drop 16-3 decision to Flagler
Tiffin University (3-12) fell behind 14-0 before getting on the scoreboard in a tough 16-3 loss to Flagler College. Pat Curtin took the loss, allowing 8 earned runs in 3.1 innings. Mike Herdman had the lone extra base hit for TU with a triple as TU had 8 total hits to Flagler's 15. TU's pitching staff also wallked 6 batters.
Dragons fall to 12th-ranked Valdosta State 13-6
Tiffin University (3-11) had a rough day at the ball park, falling to 12th-ranked Valdosta State 13-6. VSU erupted for 11 runs before the Dragons got on the board in the sixth inning. TU's defense didn't help matters as they committed 5 errors leading to 6 unearned runs. Jason Bailey had 2 hits while Colin Lowe drove in two runs as the Dragons' offense generated 8 singles on the day.
Dragons early outburst not enough in loss to Carson-Newman
Tiffin University (3-10) exploded for 5 runs in the second inning but it wasn't enough, as Carson-Newman scored in all but one inning in a 11-6 win over TU. Trevor Woodjetts took the loss, allowing 7 earned runs in 4.2 innings pitched along with 5 walks. Jason Bailey had 2 hits with a home run while Jason Kulp also drilled a two-run home run. Dragons fail to hold Carson Newman offense in sweep
Tiffin University (3-9) allowed 30 runs in dropping two games at Carson Newman, falling in the opener 17-15 before losing the nightcap 13-3. Tiffin University (3-4) got another clutch hit from Jason Kulp, as he drove in the game-winning run in the 8th inning of a 5-4 win against Slippery Rock. The win earned the Dragons another split with the Rock. Brad Davis got the win with an inning of relief work, while Kyle Blackford started the game and went 5.2 innings. Jason Bailey also had 2 RBI. Lowe's double in 9th inning gives TU split with Slippery Rock
Tiffin University (2-3) got a clutch three-run double from Colin Lowe in the top of the 9th inning, pulling out a 6-3 win in the nightcap against Slippery Rock. Pat Curtin started the game and pitched well, going 6 innings and allowing 3 earned runs with 6 strikeouts and 6 hits. Chris Pistorio came in to pitch the final 3 innings, getting the win with shutout relief. Bobby Mullin and Jordan Chiero each had two hits, with Chiero drilling a double along with Pistorio. In the opener, TU fell 5-1. Trevor Woodjets took the loss, pitching 5 innings and allowing 4 earned runs. The Dragons' lone hit was a solo home run by Jason Kulp.
Kulp's double, strong bullpen get Dragons first victory
Tiffin University (1-2) pulled out the nightcap at West Georgia, rallying to win 9-6 in 12 innings after dropping the opener 12-3. In the Dragons victory, Jason Kulp came through with a 3-run double in the 12th inning to give TU the victory, but it was the Dragons bullpen that came through even more. TU's pen tossed 8.2 innings of shutout relief after 5 earned runs were allowed by starter Trevor Woodjetts in 3.1 innings. Cory Hornyak got the win, pitching 6 shutout innings while Brock Mitchell picked up the save.
TU scored 4 runs in the 6th inning to tie the game at 6-6. Overall, TU banged out 14 hits on the day, with Colin Lowe getting 3 hits, Val Helldobler (2 hits, 2 RBI), Kyle Blackford (2 RBI), and Ty Blake (2 hits, double) leading the way. Pat Curtin (2 hits), Hornyak (2 hits) and Bobby Mullin (double) also played well.
In the opener, TU managed just 5 hits while Donnie Smith took the loss after allowing 6 earned runs in 1 inning. West Georgia led 9-0 after 2 innings. Tom Touris had a double and RBI.
TU falls to West Georgia in season opener 11-8
Tiffin University (0-1) dropped its opening game of the 2010 season, falling at West Georgia 11-8. Dragons starter Doug Berlan didn't get out of the first inning after suffering an injury. Freshman Kyle Blackford came in in relief and took the loss as the two teams banged out 14 hits apiece. Val Helldobler had 3 hits with 2 RBI, while Cory Hornyak had 2 doubles for 3 RBI. Colin Lowe also had 2 hits for 2 RBI, with Devin Rudolph and Pat Curtin also getting 2 hits each. Jason Bailey added an RBI double. The Dragons will now play West Georgia in a doubleheader starting at 11 am tomorrow.
TU announces Dragon Radio featuring three live events
Tiffin University is proud to announce the debut of Dragon Radio Live, a monthly radio program that will broadcast live from Madison Street Pub and Grub on Oct. 5 from 6-7 p.m. The show is part of a continuing partnership between Tiffin University and WMJK 100.9 FM and provides insight into Dragons Athletics as well as highlights the continuing development of the program and institution through the construction of the new Recreation Center and other initiatives. Alumni and Friends of the University are invited to join in the fun of a "live" show. Doors open at 5 p.m.
WMJK is the home of Dragons football, broadcasting all 11 games while also providing an internet stream for fans to listen to abroad. Dragons Radio will be a monthly feature highlighting all Dragons Athletic teams along with their sponsors and supporters, with a total of three broadcasts being live events from local establishments. Future live broadcasts are scheduled for Nov. 16 at T.J. Willies and March 15 at Madison Street Pub and Grub. Voice of the Dragons Frank Barber, entering his 15th year working with Tiffin University, is the host of the show, while a wide variety of coaches, administrators, and players will receive exposure and provide interesting insight into Tiffin University.
Total of 76 athletes earn Spring GLIAC Academic honors
Tiffin University had 76 spring athletes that landed GLIAC All-Academic honors, as the conference announced its spring academic honorees. Overall 565 GLIAC athletes were honored. Baseball (22) and Men's Track (23) had the most honored sports in the conference in their respective sports. For the complete list, click here.

Blake named Second Team All-Region
Tiffin University's Ty Blake was named Second Team All-Midwest Region by vote of the American Baseball Coaches Association. Blake had a strong season for the Dragons, leading them in average with a .402 mark while setting a new single season record with 70 hits. He also led the team in doubles with 15 and was third in RBI with 41. Blake had previously been named Second Team All-GLIAC while also earning GLIAC Player of the Week honors during the season.
