Dragons land two players on All-ICAA Freshmen squad

Tiffin University (3-24) placed three athletes on the Division II All-Independent team, with Alex Strok earning Second Team honors. Brian Scott and Rafael Cuellar were both named to the All-Freshmen team.

Dragons season ends with 82-61 loss to Gannon

Tiffin University (3-24) battled back from a 20 point first half deficit, cutting Gannon's lead to 5 points before the Golden Knights exploded again before halftime to push their lead to 49-33 at the halftime break en route to a fast-paced 82-61 win over the Dragons. Gannon shot a blistering 59 percent from the field, including 61 percent from three point, while Tiffin could not get on track with 36 percent shooting. Gannon was 22 of 29 from the line, and shot 66 percent from the field after halftime. Brian Scott led TU with 24 points while Rafael Cuellar and Kenny Pascley had 13 points each. 

Game of inches goes Hillsdale's way 62-60

Tiffin University (3-23) held a 34-31 halftime lead but a critical turnover with 1 second remaining stopped the Dragons from getting off a potential tying shot as Hillsdale won 62-60 in a game that saw 14 lead changes. Hillsdale hit 46 percent of their three point shots in the second half, giving them much needed points every time the Dragons got close and forcing TU to play catch up for most of the second half. Rafael Cuellar led TU with 14 points and 9 rebounds, while Alex Strok had 13 points and Brian Scott had 11 points. TU outrebounded Hillsdale 41-36. 

Huge comeback goes for naught in 76-74 OT loss

Tiffin University (3-22) battled back from an 18-point deficit with 10 minutes left in the second half to force overtime, but came up short in the rematch with Oakland City 76-74 in overtime. TU forced 13 Oaks turnovers in the final 9 minutes of the game to mount the comeback, with Alex Strok leading the team in scoring with 20 points. Brian Scott added 16 points with 8 rebounds, while Rafael Cuellar had 15 points and 9 rebounds. Darryle Miller also had 13 points and 7 rebounds. TU controlled the glass 46-31 but shot just 39 percent for the game.

Marauders use post game to propel to 93-63 win

Tiffin University (3-21) was outscored in the post 38-8, as Central State won the rematch at their place 93-63. TU had 20 turnovers to CSU's 11, while hitting just 8 of 19 free throws. The Marauders held a 39-29 rebounding edge, while they also shot a blistering 56 percent in the first half en route to a 51-36 halftime lead. Alex Strok and Brian Scott each had 20 points to lead TU. 

Chargers use free throws to beat Dragons 87-62

Tiffin University (3-20) could not keep up with Hillsdale at the free throw line, where the Chargers held a 23-3 edge en route to a 87-62 win. The Chargers controlled play in both halves, holding a 38-26 halftime edge and going on a 12-2 run to open the second half to put the game out of reach. Hillsdale held a 36-29 rebounding edge and also shot 47 percent from three point. Alex Strok led TU with 17 points, while Ryan Webb had 15 points and 7 rebounds. Rafael Cuellar also had 12 ppoints and 9 rebounds.

Rebounding edge slays Dragons at Northwood 69-48

Tiffin University (3-19) was outrebounded 49-27, including 20 offensive rebounds by Northwood, as the Dragons fell on the road 69-48. TU trailed 39-24 at the half and shot just 37 percent in the game. Rafael Cuellar led TU with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Alex Strok was the only other Dragons player in double figures with 12 points. Brian Scott had 9 points. 

Dragons exploit Marauders turnovers for 74-59 win

Tiffin University (3-18) scored 32 points off of 21 Central State turnovers, leading to a 74-59 victory. The Dragons used steady defense and 12 points from Brian Scott in the first half to build a 36-23 halftime lead and held the lead throughout the second half, hitting free throws down the stretch to put the game out of reach. TU was led by Scott's 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Rafael Cuellar had 15 points. Alex Strok and Kenny Pascley had 14 points each, with Pascley electrifying the crowd with a rebound dunk late in the second half. TU hit 21 of 30 free throws and outrebounded CSU 35-30. 

Dragons fall to Cardinals 73-62

Tiffin University (2-18) trailed 40-28 at the half and a hot shooting Saginaw Valley State team came out firing in the first 10 minutes of the second half, pushing their lead to 24 points en route to a 73-62 victory. The Dragons put a run together in the final 3:00 to cut the deficit to 9 points but it was too little, too late, as SVSU shot 55 percent for the game, 57 percent in the second half to Tiffin's 34 percent second-half field goal shooting. Darryle Miller and Kenny Pascley led TU with 14 points off the bench, while Alex Strok and Brian Scott had 13 points each. Rafael Cuellar led TU with 8 rebounds. TU was outrebounded 36-21, and could not take advantage of a season-low of 5 turnovers. 

Dragons drop another heartbreaker in closing seconds 72-70

Tiffin University (2-17) could not hold onto a 6 point lead with 1:50 left, allowing a putback rebound after a missed three pointer with 10 seconds left in falling to Urbana on the road 72-70. The Dragons had trailed by five points at the half in the close affair, with the Dragons shooting 50 percent in the game, but it wasn't enough as Urbana shot 60 percent in the second half to pull out the win. Brian Scott had 17 points, Ryan Webb had 14 points and 9 rebounds, Rafael Cuellar had 14 points, Alex Strok tallied 13 points, and Kenny Pascley had 10 points as the Dragons put forward a balanced attack.

Dragons lose tough one 62-61 at Oakland City

Tiffin University (2-16) came up just short on the road at Oakland City, coming back from a 27-23 halftime deficit but falling short 62-61 at the buzzer. OCU had 17 free throws to TU's 4 while also controlling the rebounds 41-34. Tiffin shot 38 percent in the game while Oakland City shot a blistering 61 percent in the second half. Alex Strok led TU with 19 points while Rafael Cuellar had 13 points and 7 rebounds.

Dragons no match for Grand Valley on the road

Tiffin University (2-15) fell to unbeaten Grand Valley State on the road 86-45, with the Lakers outrebounding TU 43-18 and dominating the paint 46-16. TU, which trailed at the half 37-21, shot just 37 percent in the game while the Lakers shot 55 percent. Alex Strok was the lone Dragons player in double figures with 17 points.

Second half woes stop Dragons 72-62 in Ferris State rematch

Tiffin University (2-14) committed 26 turnovers, helping Ferris State make up for a loss to the Dragons earlier this season with a 72-62 victory. The Dragons trailed just 32-29 at the half but were outscored 40-33 after the break. The Bulldogs held a huge 48-18 advantage in the paint, getting 16 second chance points. FSU also held a 36-26 advantage on the boards. Alex Strok led TU with 24 points, while Kenny Pascley added 14 points. 

Turnovers sink Dragons 90-61 against Lakers

Tiffin University (2-13) committed 19 turnovers leading to 27 Grand Valley State points, as GVSU beat the Dragons 90-61. Tiffin trailed 45-31 at the half but a quick run brought the Dragons to within 8 points early in the second half. The Lakers kept their composure, adjusted, and outscored the Dragons 45-22 over the remainder fo the game, shooting 58 percent in the game. Alex Strok led TU with 17 points, while Brian Scott added 16 points. Rafael Cuellar totaled 12 points and 6 rebounds. 

Central Michigan streaks past Dragons 100-34

Tiffin University (2-12) simply could not keep up with Central Michigan, as CMU shot 61 percent to Tiffin's 26 percent while beating TU 100-34. Alex Strok led TU with 16 points, but Tiffin was outrebounded 44-21 and allowed 45 points to be scored off of 25 turnovers. CMU led 48-19 at the half. 

Poor shooting sinks Dragons at Gannon 81-49

Tiffin University (2-11) shot just 30 percent in the game compared to Gannon's 59 percent, leading to a 46-21 halftime deficit and an eventual 81-49 loss. The Dragons never got on track from the field, while the Golden Knights also dominated the rebounds 42-31. Alex Strok led TU with 13 points while Brian Scott had 11 points.

Poor second half leads to defeat for TU vs. Ashland 72-53

Tiffin University (2-10) led 35-33 at the half but were outscored 39-18 in the second half as Ashland won 72-53 in their second matchup this season. The Dragons shot just 31 percent in the second half, going 0-for-10 from three point land after the break after shooting 50 percent from three in the first half. The Dragons battled back from a 11 points deficit in the first half to take the halftime lead, and expanded their lead early in the second half to 6 points. But Ashland bounced back on a 10-0 run and never cooled off for the remainder of the game. Alex Strok led TU with 15 points, Brian Scott had 11 points and 8 assists, and Darryle Miller added 10 points and 7 rebounds. 

Dragons' Strok, Scott lead TU to second victory

Tiffin University (2-9) got 27 points from Alex Strok and 22 points from Brian Scott, as the Dragons followed their lead to a 69-57 win over visiting Northwood. The Dragons and Timberwolves were tied 28-28 at halftime, but TU shot 50 percent in the second half while holding Northwood to 38 percent shooting after the break. Tiffin had only 14 turnovers (3 after halftime) while forcing 20 Timberwolves miscues. Rafael Cuellar also had 13 points with 11 rebounds, while Strok added 8 more rebounds. 

Dragons fall to hot-shooting Southern Indiana 87-49

Tiffin University (1-9) couldn't cool off Southern Indiana, who hit 56 percent from the field en route to a 87-49 victory. The Eagles took off from the outset, jumpring out to a 52-29 lead at the half. Tiffin committed 21 turnovers to the Eagles' 9 turnovers. Rafael Cuellar led TU with 14 points and 9 rebounds, while Alex Strok was the only other Dragon in double figures with 11 points.

Huge second half sends Dragons to first win of season 72-62 over Bulldogs

Tiffin University (1-8) trailed 36-29 at the half but stormed back to outscore Ferris State 43-26 in the second half en route to their first win of the season 72-62. The Dragons put 40 solid minutes together, shooting 60 percent in the second half and turning the ball over only 5 times after the break. TU's defense forced 21 Bulldogs turnovers, while Alex Strok had a phenomenal night, totaling 30 points on 11 of 18 shooting. Rafael Cuellar had a superb game with 18 points and 11 rebounds along with 3 blocks and 4 steals, while Brian Scott added 16 points and 6 assists. 

Poor second half knocks out Dragons 88-42 against Oilers

Tiffin University (0-8) trailed by 15 at halftime but fell apart after the break, as Findlay outscored TU 44-13 in the second half to eventually win 88-42. The Dragons and Oilers played a close first half until the Oilers put together a run near the end of the half to jump ahead 44-29. Findlay took off like a rocket in the second half, however, hitting 68 percent of their shots and 70 percent from three point, including 85 percent in the second half, while TU fell to 22 percent shooting. Alex Strok led TU with 10 points, while Rafael Cuellar had 7 points and 9 rebounds.

Warriors use turnovers to slay Dragons 90-47

Tiffin University (0-7) had 30 turnovers leading to 36 Wayne State points, as the Warriors beat the Dragons in their second meeting of the season 90-47. Tiffin shot 37 percent in the game while the Warriors cooked the nets for 58 percent, including 18 of 21 free throws and 6 of 11 from three point land. Rafael Cuellar led TU with 10 points and 7 rebounds and was the lone Dragons player in double figures. The game was close until the last 6:00 of the first half, when the Warriors went on a run and ended up leading at the break 38-20. 

Dragons fall hard at Findlay 97-38

Tiffin University (0-6) took on 4th-ranked Findlay and lost big 97-38, including a halftime deficit of 72-16. Tiffin committed 28 turnovers while the Oilers lit up the scoreboard shooting 61 percent in the game. Ryan Webb led Tiffin with 9 points and Darryle Miller had 8 points. 

Dragons come up short in second half, fall 75-63 to Urbana

Tiffin University (0-5) led 28-27 at the half but were outscored 48-35 in the second half, eventually falling 75-63 to Urbana. The Dragons got off to a sluggish start out of the halftime lockerroom, falling behind by 10 points but battling back to tie it at 51-51 with 6:00 to play. But Urbana bounced back to outscore the Dragons the rest of the way 24-12 for the win. TU struggled through 28 turnovers. Alex Strok led the Dragons with 19 points while Brian Scott also had 18 points, but their offensive output was offset by 12 turnovers between the two guards. Ryan Webb also had 12 points and 10 rebounds while Rafael Cuellar had 10 points and 6 rebounds.  

Rough first half sinks Dragons 87-50 at Kentucky Wesleyan

Tiffin University (0-4) got off to a rough start at Kentucky Wesleyan, trailing 45-27 at halftime as the Panthers shot a blistering 62 percent in the half en route to a 87-50 win. The Dragons never got on track, turning the ball over 31 times and allowing 40 points in the paint. Alex Strok led TU in scoring with 14 points, followed by Ryan Webb (12 points, 7 rebounds) and Brian Scott (10 points). 

First half sinks Dragons 76-61 at Wayne State

Tiffin University (0-3) trailed 39-25 at halftime, creating too big a hole to get out of at Wayne State in an eventual 76-61 loss. Wayne State held a 41-25 rebounding edge while shooting 51 percent from the floor for the game. Ryan Webb led TU with 13 points, followed by Alex Strok's 11 points and Brian Scott's 10 points.

Heidelberg outraces TU 109-77

Tiffin University's home opener went to visiting Heidelberg 109-77 in a first-ever meeting between the crosstown schools, as the Dragons fell to 0-2. After a close first 10 minutes, Heidelberg took advantage of missed shots by the Dragons to race to a 48-31 halftime edge. The Berg then turned on the jets in the second half with some hot three point shooting, hitting 10 of 18 treys in the second half en route to a 32 point victory. Alex Strok and Brian Scott had 14 points apiece to lead TU, with Rafael Cuellar totaling 9 points and 8 rebounds. TU shot 35 percent in the first half and 42 percent in the game, while Heidleberg hit at a .541 clip, including a red hot 60 percent from the field in the second half.  

Dragons fall to Eagles in opener 111-59

The Dragons got off on the wrong foot in their season opener at Ashland, shooting just 35 percent in the first half while the Eagles lit up the scoreboard at a 62 percent clip, as Ashland beat TU 111-59. The Eagles led 61-25 at halftime as the Dragons could never recover. Tiffin had 34 turnovers in the game, and a strong second half shooting percentage of 56 percent proved too little, too late. Alex Strok had 14 points and Rafael Cuellar had 10 points and 7 rebounds.

Dragons to participate in Arthritis Walk Sept. 29

A total of 17 players representing Tiffin University's men's baskeball program will take part in the Arthritis Foundation's Northwest Ohio Fall Arthritis Walk at Tiffin's Hedges-Boyer Park on Sept. 29 at 10 a.m. The Arthritis Walk helps raise funds to support research in the prevention, control and cure of arthritis. Hundreds of walks are held nationwide to support the cause. The event is an enjoyable morning walk of a one-mile or three-mile course, and also includes entertainment, prizes, snacks and more.

Prep standouts sign with Dragons

Five prep standouts have signed with the Dragons to further their basketball career. Brian Scott (5-7, point guard, Chaminade-Julienne HS) is a First Team All-State player in Division II who averaged 15 points per game. He was a First Team All-GCL North player who was the 2005-06 GCL North Player of the Year when he averaged 16 points per game. Alan Bradford (5-11, point guard, Cody HS) is an All-West player for the Detroit Public School League, while Darryl Miller (6-6, guard/forward, Northwestern HS) was also honored by the PSL with an All-Southeast Honorable Mention selection. Ryan Webb (6-6, forward, Renaissance HS) is a four-year varsity player who played on two state champion teams, while Joe Horton (6-4, guard, Akron Copley HS) is also a four-year varsity starter. Bradford, Miller, and Webb were all recognized as three of Michigan's top prep players, while Scott was also recognized by College Prep spotlight and JJ Huddle as one of Ohio's top point guards.  

 

Pessell named Second Team All-Independent

Ryan Pessell finished his Dragons career with a Second Team All-Independent Collegiate Athletic Association citation, his second such honor in his career. He was the lone Dragons player earning selection to the team, which honors the top Division II Independent athletes from the country.

 

Pessell, Strok earn All-AMC honors

Ryan Pessell finished his Dragons career with a Second Team All-AMC citation, averaging 14.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. He was the lone Dragons player named to the All-AMC team, while teammate Alex Strok earned All-AMC Freshmen team honors after averaging 10.3 points per game in his TU debut season.
