Dragons fall to Oilers in classic overtime thriller in season finale
Tiffin University (2-25) left it all on the court as they locked up with Findlay in a wild season finale, as the Oilers squeaked out a 72-71 victory in overtime. The Dragons shot 56 percent in the first half, leading to a 32-27 halftime edge. The Oilers were cold from the outset, shooting 33 percent in the first half. Only Nathan Hyde's hot shooting (32 points in the game) kept the Oilers in it, as they also made only 24 of 38 free throws. The Dragons took advantage of the cold shooting, improving to 68 percent from the field in the second half in building a 14 point lead with 7:36 to play. But the sheer volume of fouls (31-12 against TU) and trips to the free throw line (38 attempts to 15 attempts) gave Findlay an opening that they used to whittle down the lead, as they outscored TU 21-5 over a 7:00 stretch and took a 66-64 lead with 28 seconds left in regulatiion.
Brian Scott drove down the court and hit a scoop shot with 18 seconds left to tie the score. Findlay put up a shot inside but Rafael Cuellar blocked it as regulation ended, sending the game into overtime. In overtime, Scott scored all five of TU's points, canning a three pointer with 1:36 to go to give TU a 71-68 lead. But a three point play by Marcus Parker tied the score 71-71. A foul with 9 seconds remaining gave Tyler Sparks a chance at the free throw line, as he hit one shot to give Findlay a 72-71 lead. A desperatiion three point attempt by Austin Smith fell short as the Oilers got the win.
Scott led TU with 27 points and 5 assists, while DeAngelo Jordan had 13 points. Travis Spahr also had 14 points with 9 rebounds. Findlay held a 24-8 edge at the free throw line. Hyde's 32 led the Oilers while Aaron Robinson (12 points) and Marcus Parker (11 points) also had double figures.
Dragons' frigid second half leads to 67-56 loss to Hillsdale
Tiffin University (2-24) shot 54 percent in the first half and played aggressively in playing Hillsdale to a 29-29 tie at halftime, but could not keep it going in the second half, shooting 31 percent in falling in a close one 67-56. The Dragons came out of the halftime lockerroom and didn't make a field goal for over 9 minutes as Hillsdale amassed a 15 point lead. TU managed to get as close as 5 points late in the game but Hillsdale outscored TU 15-9 over the final 5:00 to put the game away. TU had 17 turnovers in the game leading to 20 Hillsdale points. Rafael Cuellar led the Dragons with 12 points while Brian Scott had 10 points. DeAngelo Jordan had 8 points and tied Mohammed Fall with 7 rebounds apiece.
Dragons can't cool off Warriors, fall 91-74
Tiffin University (2-23) failed to step up the defense, allowing Wayne State to shoot 60 percent in the game in falling 91-74. TU also turned the ball over 17 times while the Warriors had just 9 turnovers. TU trailed at the half 39-29 but could not seem to pull the game to within striking distance as they continued to trail by the same amount throughout the second half. Rafael Cuellar led TU with 15 points and 9 rebounds, while Keenan Barlow had 14 points. Brian Scott and DeAngelo Jordan tossed in 13 points each.
Dragons defense fails to stop Northwood in 82-74 loss
Tiffin University (2-22) trailed only 37-35 at halftime, but a steady three point barrage along with a significant free throw advantage gave Northwood a 82-74 victory. The Dragons allowed 12 treys in the game and were outscored at the charity stripe 16-8, negating a 41-34 rebounding advantage and a 34-22 scoring edge in the paint. Northwood also outshot TU 50-40 percent in the second half. DeAngelo Jordan led TU with 23 points and 7 rebounds, while Brian Scott added 19 points and Rafael Cuellar had 13 ppoints and 11 rebounds.
Dragons hang tough but can't hold lead in 69-55 loss
Tiffin University held the lead for most of the first half and continued to hold a lead during the second half, but a 12-2 run by Saginaw Valley in the second half put the Dragons behind by 10, a hole they couldn’t pull themselves out of as they fell to the visiting Cardinals 69-55.
TU led 30-24 at the break thanks to the hot hand of Brian Scott. The junior guard was three of three from behind the arc and added a two point goal to have a team high 11 points at the half. The Dragons, however, were outscored 45-25 in the second half. Scott and DeAngelo Jordan led the Dragons with 11 points each. Mohammed Fall finished with 9 points and 11 rebounds.
TU (2-21. 1-17 GLIAC) is back in action Thursday when Northwood comes to town.
Six Dragons reach double figures in 89-83 win
Tiffin University (2-20) had one of their best offensive nights of the season, shooting 52 percent from the floor, including 58 percent in the second half, in beating Lake Superior State 89-83. Six players reached double figures as the Dragons battled back from a 48-41 halftime deficit. The Lakers went cold after halftime, falling from 60 percent in the first half to 35 percent in the second half. TU also held a 25-11 free throw advantage. The game was close from the outset, as it featured 12 tie scores and 13 lead changes.
DeAngelo Jordan led the Dragons with 22 points while Brian Scott had 17 points. Rafael Cuellar added 14 points and 7 rebounds, while Mohammed Fall also played well in the paint for 12 points and 10 rebounds. Keenan Barlow had 12 points and 5 assists while Travis Spahr also reached double digits with 10 points.
Jordan's 32 goes for naught, Dragons fall 82-72
Tiffin University (1-20) got 32 points from DeAngelo Jordan, as he sparked a comeback effort by the Dragons after a disappointing first half, but it wasn't enough as TU fell at Northern Michigan 82-72. The Dragons trailed by as much as 27 points in the first half, rallying late to cut the deficit to a 51-32 halftime score. TU continued to fight throughout the second half, with Jordan leading the way as the Dragons cut the deficit to a 9 point game with 3:33 to go. The Dragons could get no closer, however, as the Wildcats shot a steady 54 percent from the floor while also hitting 19 free throws to TU's 10. Jordan's 32 points led the way along with 8 rebounds, while Brian Scott had 14 points, Keenan Barlow had 9 points, and Travis Spahr added 8 points.
Dragons suffer second half blues again, fall 58-52 at Michigan Tech
Tiffin University (1-19) held a halftime lead for the second consecutive game only to suffer a tough second half in dropping a close one at Michigan Tech 58-52. The Dragons led 24-19 at halftime, but the Huskies turned it around big time in the second half, shooting 60 percent from the field to TU's 27 percent. The Huskies outscored TU 39-28 in the second half, opening the second half on a 15-5 run that gave them a quick 10 point lead. Brian Scott led TU with 14 points while DeAngelo Jordan had 10 points. Mohammed Fall also had 7 points with a team-high 10 rebounds, while Rafael Cuellar and Travis Spahr also had 7 rebounds each.
Dragons lose first half lead, fall 76-68 at Northwood
Tiffin University (1-18) held a 14 point first half lead and led at halftime 32-27, but Northwood turned it around dramatically in the second half en route to a narrow 76-68 win over TU. Northwood shot a blistering 66 percent in the second half while TU cooled off at 31 percent from the floor, leading to a 49-36 scoring edge for the Timberwolves after the halftime break. TU shot just 33 percent for the game. DeAngelo Jordan led the team with 19 points while Brian Scott added 16 and Keenan Barlow had 9 points. Rafael Cuellar also had 6 points and 12 rebounds.
Dragons lose pace in second half, fall to Warriors 73-58
Tiffin University (1-17) played Wayne State even after the first 20 minutes, but the Warriors made 21 of 24 foul shots on the night and outpaced TU 73-58 for the win. Overall, WSU held a 21-8 edge at the line and a 37-29 edge in rebounding, enough of a difference to pick up the win. The Dragons put up a solid fight for most of the game, battling back from a 9 point deficit in the first half to tie the game 27-27 at halftime. Wayne State outscored TU 46-31 after the break. DeAngelo Jordan had 20 points to lead TU while Keenan Barlow had 12 points and Rafael Cuellar had 10 points.
Dragons fall at Hillsdale 95-74
Tiffin University (1-16) couldn't match the solid shooting of Hillsdale, as the Chargers hit at a 55 percent clip from the field in beating TU 95-74. The Chargers took care of the ball, committing only 9 turnovers to Tiffin's 16, while also hitting 14 three pointers to TU's 7. They led 51-33 at the half. Austin Smith, Keenan Barlow, DeAngelo Jordan, Mike Hammonds, and Mohammed Fall all had 11 points for TU.
Dragons no match for first-place Oilers 91-62
Tiffin University (1-15) was no match for Findlay on the road, as the Oilers dominated play in the first half and easily outdistanced TU 91-62. The Oilers put the game away early, amassing a 52-17 lead by halftime. The Dragons had 22 turnovers in the game to Findlay's 7, while Findlay blistered the nets for a 58 percent field goal percentage in the opening half while TU shot 28 percent. DeAngelo Jordan led TU with 16 points and 6 rebounds while Keenan Barlow had 13 points and 7 rebounds. Travis Spahr added 9 points and Mohammed Fall 8 points.
Dragons hang tough but fall to Lakers 63-54
Tiffin University’s men’s basketball team fell to GLIAC North leading Grand Valley State 63-54 at home. The Dragons (1-14, 0-10) were behind by ten to end the first half. They would cut the GVSU lead to one a couple times in the second half, but the Lakers would find an answer to hold off the Dragons.
The Dragons first cut the lead to one when Brain Scott hit a three to make it 38-37 with 14:44 remaining. After two Lakers free throws, TU got two foul shots of their own from Rafael Cuellar to again cut the lead to one. GVSU then went on a 5-0 run and the Dragons would cut it to three twice, but could never get any closer.
The Dragons started the game off on a good note, leading for the first three and a half minutes thanks to the hot start of DeAngelo Jordan. Jordan scored the first six points for TU by hitting two field goals and two free throws. Austin Smith hit a jumper less than 4 minutes into the game to give the Dragons an 8-5 lead, but GVSU hit a three ball thirty seconds later to tie the game at eight and take the lead for good after a Dragons turnover on the next possession.
Scott finished the game with 16 points and Jordan added ten. Cullar and Keenan Barlow each added nine points apiece. Jordan (eight) and Cuellar (seven) also were the leading rebounders for TU.
TU travels to Findlay Thursday as they tangle with the defending Division II national champion Oilers.
Poor shooting leads to 85-66 loss to Bulldogs
Tiffin University (1-13, 0-9 GLIAC) could not contain a hot shooting Ferris State team in the first half as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 48-33 halftime lead en route to a 85-66 victory. The Dragons fell off in the second half, shooting just 32 percent, while the Bulldogs finished with a 54 percent field goal percentage, including 62 percent in the first half.
Austin Smith led the Dragons with 20 points but was the lone player in double figures. DeAngelo Jordan had 9 points while Rafael Cuellar added 9 points and 9 rebounds. Brian Scott also had 8 points.
Dragons drop 67-48 road contest to Cardinals
Tiffin University (1-12, 0-8 GLIAC) committed 22 turnovers and shot just 30 percent en route to a 67-48 loss at Saginaw Valley State. The Dragons hung close early but fell behind by halftime 31-19. The Dragons were unable to get on track in the second half as the Cardinals put the game away.
Keenan Barlow led the Dragons with 8 points and 5 rebounds while Brandon Harris matched him with 8 points and 5 rebounds as well. Austin Smith also had 8 points.
Dragons fall to trey barrage, lose 90-73 to Huskies
Tiffin University (1-11, 0-7 GLIAC) went toe-to-toe with Michigan Tech in a fastpaced first half but a sustained three point attack by the Huskies led to TU's defeat 90-73.
The Huskies fired 57 percent from three point, burying 16 of 28 shots. The Dragons shot a blistering 66 percent in the first half, keeping them to with 48-46 at the half. But MTU continued the assault while the Dragons fell apart offensively, shooting just 29 percent in the second half. MTU won the rebounding battle 41-27 and also had the edge in free throws 22-13.
Keenan Barlow had 18 points with 7 rebounds, while DeAngelo Jordan also was in double figures with 10 points. Rafael Cuellar had 9 points and 8 rebounds while Austin Smith also had 8 points.
Dragons struggle in second half, fall 70-56 to Wildcats
DeAngelo Jordan had 18 points and pulled down six rebounds for Tiffin University, but it wasn’t enough as the Dragons fell 70-56 to the visiting Northern Michigan Wildcats. Keenan Barlow also had a solid game for the Dragons pumping in 10 points and ripping down seven rebounds while handing out four assists.
The Dragons only trailed by four at the break, but made only eight field goals in the second half while watching the Wildcats knock down 13 shots.
The Dragons who fell to 1-10 (0-6 GLIAC) will entertain another GLIAC team Saturday when Michigan Tech comes to town.
Dragons left behind by Eagles in 87-60 loss
Tiffin University (1-9, 0-5) stayed fairly close in the first half but could not keep pace with Ashland in a 87-60 loss. The Eagles held a 43-26 scoring advantage after halftime to put the game away. TU trailed at the half 44-34. The Dragons could not get themselves on track offensively, shooting 34 percent in the game while Ashland converted at a 53 percent clip. Ashland also held a 42-31 edge in rebounding.
Lemar Pughsley led the Dragons with 13 points and 6 rebounds while Brian Scott was also in double figures with 10 points. Mike Hammonds and Travis Spahr had 9 points each while Mohammed Fall had 8 points.
17th-ranked Kentucky Wesleyan downs Dragons 105-76
Tiffin University (1-8) couldn't handle 17th-ranked Kentucky Wesleyan, as the Panthers raced out to a 26-9 lead en route to an eventual 105-76 victory. KWC led at the half 54-30, using a strong rebounding effort to take command early. The Panthers outrebounded the Dragons 44-26 while also shooting 57 percent from the field.
Brian Scott led the Dragons with 24 points while DeAngelo Jordan also reached double figures with 14 points. Mohammed Fall added 11 points and Lemar Pughsley finished with 8 points.
Poor shooting dooms Dragons at Lake Superior State 82-63
Tiffin University (1-7) could not get on track from the field, with a cold spell after halftime leading to a big lead for Lake Superior State en route to a 82-63 victory.
The Dragons shot just 39 percent in the first half while the Lakers hit at a 56 percent clip, but TU trailed only 41-31 at the half. A hot streak by the Lakers at the start of the second half doomed the Dragons, though, as LSSU put together a 24-6 run to open the second half and take a massive 28 point lead.
In addition to outshooting TU in the game 57-38 percent, the Lakers outrebounded TU 37-25. Brian Scott led the Dragons with 14 points while DeAngelo Jordan was also in double figures with 11 points. Ryan Cosgray had 9 points and Mohammed Fall had 7 points and 5 rebounds.
Eagles defense leads to 70-50 win over Dragons
With the game tied 8-8 with just over 11 minutes left in the first half it was apparent that both Tiffin University and Ashland’s offenses were struggling. The Eagles went on an 11 point burst over the next four minutes though, while the Dragons were held to two points over that span to give them a comfortable 12 point lead. The Eagles would keep a double digit lead the rest of the game, leaving TU with a 70-50 victory.
The Dragons took an early 8-6 lead with 15:19 left to play in the first half after DeAngelo Jordan nailed a three pointer off a pass from Mike Hammonds. The Eagles scored a 90 seconds later to tie the game at eight and took the lead for good two minutes after that. The Dragons would only score eight more points the rest of the half, trailing 34-16 at the break.
“This is the best defensive team we faced, the one that has given us the most pressure on the half court,” said TU Coach John Hill. "They had a little trap and they doubled and we couldn’t get into the flow on offense. We just could not get into it. Ashland just came out and really played well defensively.”
The Dragons pretty much scored with Ashland in the second half as TU scored 34 to Ashland’s 36, but the first half was just too much for the Dragons to overcome.
“We’re still young, we’re still learning. It’s still early in the season,” Hill said. “It hurts we haven’t got to play much at home and there are no easy games. In the first half we shot 28 percent. You’re not going to beat anyone shooting 28 percent.”
After the Dragons struggled on 7-for-25 shooting in the first half, they were able to shoot 14-for-24 in the second half to pull their percentage up to 43 percent for the game. Brian Scott scored 11 points off the bench to lead the Dragons. He was backed by Brandon Harris (5-6 from the field) who scored ten. Jordan grabbed a team high seven rebounds while Keenan Barlow added five.
Tiffin University falls to 1-6 (0-3 GLIAC) with the loss while improving Ashland to 3-3 (1-2). The Dragons next game is a week from today at Lake Superior State.
Marauders nip Dragons late for 76-69 victory
Tiffin University (1-5) held a 43-40 lead at halftime but Central State outdistanced the Dragons by 10 points in the second half en route to a close 76-69 victory. The Dragons led for most of the game, holding a four-point lead with 4:44 to play. CSU turned it up over the final five minutes, pulling the game out by outscoring TU 12-1 to close out the game. The Marauders (9-0) forced a total of 23 Dragons turnovers, including 16 in the first half. Keenan Barlow led the Dragons with 21 points, including 6 for 7 from three point. DeAngelo Jordan had 18 points and Mohammed Fall tallied 16 points.
Bulldogs use strong first half to down Dragons 82-61
Tiffin University (1-4) got out of the gate slowly at Ferris State, falling behind 22-7 to open the game before eventually falling 82-61. The Dragons trailed at the half 49-28 as the Bulldogs shot 52 percent from the field in the first half while holding TU to 41 percent shooting. Ferris State also hit well from three point land, hitting 11 shots at a 45 percent clip.
Keenan Barlow led the Dragons with 20 points and 5 rebounds, while DeAngelo Jordan had 11 points and 7 rebounds. Mohammed Fall was solid inside for 10 points and 5 rebounds while Rafael Cuellar had 6 points and 5 rebounds.
Dragons fall in close matchup with Lakers 63-49
Tiffin University (1-3) put up quite the fight, batttling back from a 9-point halftime deficit to play a very tight second half before falling apart over the final 4:48, losing 63-49 at Grand Valley State.
TU trailed 32-23 at halftime, but the Dragons came out strong to start the final 20 minutes, outscoring GVSU 12-4 to bring the score to 36-35. The two teams traded shots leading to a narrow 46-45 Grand Valley State lead with 4:48 to play.
The Lakers maintained their composure down the stretch, putting together a 9-0 run to take a 10-point lead, then hit their free throws when it counted. The Lakers outscored TU 17-4 over the final 4:48 to secure the victory.
DeAngelo Jordan led the Dragons with 16 points and 6 rebounds, while Rafael Cuellar had 7 points and 9 rebounds and Keenan Barlow had 6 points with 9 rebounds. Poor shooting eventually cost the Dragons, as they hit just 29 percent from the floor. The Lakers shot 35 percent but also outrebounded TU 44-39. The Lakers made the most of their second chances, outdistancing TU 24-9 on second chance points and 19-9 off of turnovers. GVSU also had stronger post play with a 30-14 paint advantage.
Dragons grab first win of season 79-71 over Cougars
With all the history first year coach John Hill has in Tiffin, it would seem as if he would be ecstatic after the team’s first win. However, Tiffin University’s 79-71 win over Cincinnati-Clermont certainly didn’t have Hill jumping for joy.
"It’s been seven years (since his last coaching victory at Heidelberg), but it’s not a great feeling right now because of all the stuff that we saw that we have to do,” said Hill, the Tiffin Columbian graduate and former coach of Heidelberg. “What’s neat about this game is John Hurley (Clermont’s coach) hired me as an assistant for my first teaching job out of college.”
Although Hill said the feeling wasn’t great, the Dragons could have faced a worse feeling. With 5:25 remaining the Dragons had a turnover that Cincinnati-Clermont turned into a basket to take a seven point lead, the biggest lead that either team had held all game. But the Dragons kept their composure and tied the game with 2:43 left on the clock when Mohammad Fall hit a wide open three pointer. With the score tied at 70, TU would outscore the Cougars 9-1 over the last 2:40 to pick up the 79-71 victory.
After Fall’s game tying three pointer, he then came up big on the defensive end with a blocked shot. On TU’s next offensive possession, Rafael Cuellar made a jumper that would put the Dragons up for good. TU’s lead was cut to one after a Cincinnati-Clermont free throw, but a jumper by Brian Scott pushed the lead back to three. The Dragons would make five free throws over the last 50 seconds to ice the victory, getting three from Merlynd Ameti and two from Scott.
“No matter what you do, you try to preach ‘you don’t give up,”’ said Hill of the late comeback. “People have to step up their game to get that.”
Before Cincinnati-Clermont’s late seven point lead and Tiffin University’s final eight point advantage, the game was pretty much even. The teams went to the lockerroom at halftime tied at 34. The biggest lead enjoyed in the first half was less than three minutes into the game when DeAngelo Jordan scored a basket to give TU an 8-4 advantage.
“At times they totally outplayed us,” said Coach Hill. “But in the last part of the game we outplayed them when it mattered.”
TU got a big 19 points from Keenan Barlow while Fall (15), Cuellar (11), and Scott (10) all reached double figures. The Dragons held a slight 42-38 rebounding advantage thanks to Cuellar’s nine and Fall’s eight. Scott led the team with six assists. Coach Hill talked about the transition Scott has had to make.
“Brian’s a good shooter. Brian was a shooter, a wing player; he’s got to learn his role as a point guard. He hurt us at times in the first half, but when it counted down the road, I wanted him at the free throw line. I want the ball in his hands; he’s a good outside shooter,” said Hill.
One concern for Hill was the 18 turnovers his team committed. “What hurt us was we had 18 turnovers at key times,” he said.
The win improves TU to 1-2. TU will play at Grand Valley State on Thursday in a GLIAC game.
TU drops road game at Southern Indiana 93-73
Tiffin University (0-2) played a close first half before Southern Indiana put a late run together to give them a 10-point halftime lead en route to a 93-73 victory. TU trailed by just one point with 7:00 remaining when the Eagles put a run together to jump out to a 15 point lead with a couple minutes left in the half. TU rebounded to score 5 unanswered points, trailing at halftime 48-38.
The second half was more of the same, as USI continued their solid shooting on the night to keep TU at bay. The Eagles shot 58 percent in the contest while the Dragons also shot fairly well at 53 percent, but TU couldn't keep up in the rebounding department as the Eagles outrebounded them 34-23. TU also struggled at the free throw line, hitting 14 of 26 shots. TU was much improved in the turnover department compared to their first game, but still finished with 16 turnovers.
DeAngelo Jordan scored 15 points in the first half en route to 21 to lead the Dragons along with 4 rebounds, while Brian Scott had a strong second half to finish with 19 points. Keenan Barlow had 12 points and a team-high 5 rebounds while Rafael Cuellar also had 8 points.
TU falls to West Liberty in opener 113-72
Tiffin University (0-1) faced a high octane offense in their opening game of the 2009-10 season, taking on West Liberty in a packed Gillmor Center. The Hilltoppers opened the game on fire, jumping out to a 22-3 lead en route to a 113-72 victory.
Turnovers plagued the Dragons throughout the night, as they finished with 31 for the game. The turnovers led to WLU putting up 27 more shots than the Dragons in the game. West Liberty shot 54 percent, 61 percent in the first half, while also totaling 21 steals.
TU shot 52 percent in the game but gave the Hilltoppers too many offensive opportunities to keep up. Merlynd Ameti and Keenan Barlow led the Dragons with 14 points apiece, while DeAngelo Jordan also finished in double figures with 10 points. Brian Scott had 9 points and Mike Hammonds 8 points.
