Walkosky named Head Football Coach at Tiffin University

David Walkosky has been named Head Football Coach at Tiffin University, taking over for departing coach Nate Cole. 

"I welcome the opportunity to guide the football program,” Walkosky, who most recently served as Assistant Coach at Washington State University, said. “It was important to me to coach somewhere we had an opportunity to win. It was also important to me who I would be coaching for and who I would be coaching with. I was impressed with Tiffin’s facilities, and I was also familiar with the area.”  (more)

Offense holds on for 38-35 win over Defense in annual spring game

Tiffin's offensive squad jumped out to a 26-8 1st quarter advantage, then held on as the defense turned it up over the final three quarters before winning 38-35. Trey Williams hauled in a couple 70 yard touchdown receptions to give the Offense the early lead, with the Offense leading 27-14 at the half. But TU's defense came back strong in the fourth quarter. Trailing 36-22 at the start of the period, the Defense climbed to within 36-35 as time was winding down. A fourth down defensive penalty gave the Offense a critical first down to seal the victory.

Steelers' Washington signs one-year deal

Pittsburgh Steelers and former Tiffin University wide receiver Nate Washington signed a one-year deal to remain with the Steelers in 2008. Washington will enter his fourth season with the Steelers, who signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2005. Last season, Washington caught 29 passes for 450 yards with a career-high five touchdowns. He has 64 catches for 1057 yards with nine scores in 33 games, including five starts.  

Cole decides to step down as Dragons Football Coach

Nate Cole announced that he has resigned as Tiffin University’s head football coach in order to pursue other coaching opportunities. The Dragons have won 36 games and lost 19 during the five years that Cole has served as head coach, including a record of 19 wins and 3 losses during the past two years. Coach Cole was selected as the 2007 Coach of the Year in the Great Lakes Football Conference.

 

After graduating from Tiffin in 1995, Cole served as a graduate assistant for two years and then as the offensive coordinator from 1997 until he was appointed to the head coaching position in 2003.  He earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Tiffin in 1999 and has taught courses in the sports management degree program.

 

According to Athletic Director Lonny Allen, “Based on the record of our football team in recent years, I expect that Nate Cole will be successful in his desire to obtain a head coaching position at another college or university.  He has been very passionate about the TU football program and has had a strong desire for it to be successful.  We wish him well, and a national search for his replacement will begin immediately.”

Edwards, Ostrowski land Football Gazette honors

Tiffin University's Dyshaun Edwards and Sean Ostrowski were named Third Team All-Northwest Region by Don Hansen's Football Gazette. Edwards, a wide receiver, and Ostrowski, a tight end, helped lead the Dragons to the GLFC Championship in 2007. 

Yarbrough named Second Team All-Northwest Region

Tiffin University's Steven Yarbrough landed a Daktronics Division II Second Team selection in the Northwest Region by vote of the region sports information directors. Yarbough was one of four linebackers chosen on the Second Team and the only Dragons player selected.

Tiffin University finishes 27th in the nation

Tiffin University rose to 27th in the nation in the final AFCA national poll after winning the GLFC Championship 62-26 over Central State in their season finale. The Dragons now leave the GLFC to join the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the 2008 season, having posted a two-year mark of 19-3 overall, 9-1 in the GLFC.

Wade, Yarbrough earn Player of Week honors

Tiffin's Pierece Wade and Steven Yarbrough took top honors in the GLFC as Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week. The Dragons beat Central State 62-26 to win the GLFC Championship behind Wade's 155 yards rushing and Yarbrough's 11 tackles. (more

Dragons win GLFC Championship with 62-26 blowout of Central State

Tiffin University (9-2) claimed the Great Lakes Football Conference Championship with a big 62-26 victory at Central State. The Dragons started the rout early with 28 first quarter points, including 21 points in the first  8 minutes. Pierece Wade scored the first of 4 touchdowns on a 3-yard run at the 10:37 mark. The Dragons then blocked the first of 3 punts on the day, with Jon Hemmelgarn recovering the block and returning it 6 yards for another touchdown after Central State's first possession of the day. After recovering the ensuing onside kick, TU's Wade then scored on an 8 yard run to make it 21-0 at the 6:52 mark of the 1st quarter.

Matt Root then connected on the first of 3 touchdowns, hitting Dyshaun Edwards on a 12 yard pass with 21 seconds left in the first quarter for another score. Wade scored again at the 10:50 mark of the 2nd quarter, and Root finished TU's scoring in the first half with a 4 yard pass to Alvin McKnight. TU led at halftime 42-14.

Root opened the scoring in the second half with a 12 yard pass to Tom Fritsch, Donnie Johnson scored on a 17 yard run after another punt block, and Wade capped off TU's day with a 73 yard touchdown run at 5:31 of the 4th quarter. Wade led the Dragons with 155 yards, as TU totaled 279 rushing yards in the game. Root connected on a blistering 18 of 21 passes for 201 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Central State's Derrick Moss was held to just 38 yards on the ground by a tough Dragons defense.

Thirteen Dragons earn spots on GLFC Academic Team

Tiffin University had 13 of its football players earn selection to the All-GLFC Academic team. Brian Howard (OL) was the highest offensive honoree, landing on the First Team with a 3.76 GPA in Accounting. Andrew Manocchio (CB) was also a First Team Defensive pick with a 3.59 GPA in Management. Tiffin University reappears at 31st in AFCA poll

Tiffin University reappeared at 31st in the AFCA poll after their record-setting 73-30 win over Missouri-Rolla. The Dragons had fallen out of the poll after a loss at No. 25 Hillsdale, but rebounded nicely with the win over the Miners. TU now travels to Central State on Nov. 10 for the GLFC Championship game at 1:30 p.m.

Dragons obliterate records in 73-30 explosion against Miners

Tiffin University (8-2) bounced back in record-setting fashion after a loss at Hillsdale in Week 10, blasting Missouri-Rolla 73-30 on Senior Day. TU now travels to Central State for their season finale in a game that will decide the GLFC Championship. In Saturday's game, TU set new records for most points (73) and most offensive yards (645) in a wild game that saw 79 combined points scored in the first half. Donnie Johnson scored three touchdowns in the first 18 minutes of the game on runs of 8 and 4 yards and a reception of 7 yards from Matt Root. After TU opened scoring at the 11:46 mark, UMR's Ashton Gronewold ran back the first of two scintillating kickoff returns for touchdowns, the first covering 90 yards. TU responded on the ensuing kickoff as Dyshaun Edwards broke free for an 87 yard touchdown return. UMR took the lead 14-13 after recovering a fumble and returning it 21 yards for a score, but Johnson's second score gave TU a 21-14 lead they would not relinquish. Pierece Wade scored a touchdown on a 36 yard run before Gronewold returned another kickoff 94 yards for a score that made the score TU 35-20. Root passed for three more scores in the last 7:39 of the second quarter to give TU a 56-23 halftime edge.

Wade rushed for 162 yards while Johnson rushed for 115. Jon Hemmelgarn got 89 fourth-quarter yards, while Johson also caught 6 passes for 60 yards. Dyshaun Edwards had 85 yards receiving, while Root completed 18 of 25 passes for 228 yards and 4 touchdowns. Steve Yarbrough and Rahsan Wilson had 9 tackles , while Drew Douthit had 8 tackles with 3 tackles for loss, a fumble recovery, and a sack. Courtney Embry and Andrew Manocchio had interceptions. TU outgained UMR 645-207, including 413 yards rushing. They had 33 first downs to UMR's 9. 

Dragons fall to Hillsdale 31-14 in regional matchup

Tiffin University (7-2) never got on track offensively, as Hillsdale shut down the Dragons 31-14. The Chargers outgained TU 451-163 in total offense, with Tiffin held to just 59 yards on the ground. Donnie Johnson was the leading rusher with 38 yards. Hillsdale had 26 first downs to TU's 12, yet at the half TU trailed only 10-7. The Dragons defense could not keep up after a long first half, however, as Hillsdale scored two touchdowns early in the second half and let their defense do the rest of the work. The Chargers' Vinnie Panizzi rushed for 161 yards to pace the offense, while TU's Parris Burt had 12 tackles to lead TU. Steve Yarbrough and Rahsan Wilson also had 9 tackles each.

Dragons streak past Lincoln 57-6

Tiffin University (7-1, 3-0) scored 57 unanswered points in beating Lincoln on the road 57-6, amassing 566 yards of total offense to Lincoln's 126. Tiffin held Lincoln to just 32 yards on the ground while also posting 4 sacks and 13 tackles for loss. The Dragons had numerous offensive standouts, with Alvin McKnight rushing for 105 yards, Pierece Wade gaining 93 yards, and Jon Hemmelgarn totaling 91 yards. Dyshaun Edwards had 73 yards receiving while Matt Root passed for 237 yards and 4 touchdowns. Donnie Johnson scored 3 touchdowns, two on receptions. Steve Yarbough was the top defensive player with 9 tackles, a sack, 2 tackles for loss, a deflection, and a blocked kick. Courtney Embry also had a 37 yard interception return.

Tiffin University rises to 24th in latest AFCA poll

Tiffin University bounced up one spot to 24th in the country in the most recent AFCA poll. The Dragons, coming off a 17-13 win over GLFC rival St. Joseph's at Homecoming, now take to the road for a game at Lincoln (MO).

Tiffin University (6-1, 2-0) played one of their best defensive games of the year against a tough St. Joseph's team, winning 17-13 in a come-from-behind victory. The Dragons never took the lead until the 4:27 mark of the 3rd quarter, when the Dragons' Donnie Johnson hit Ryan Dunn on a 1-yard pass after the Pumas snap sailed over the head of the punter on a botched punt, giving the Dragons a first-and-goal situation at the 3-yard line. The game was tied 10-10 at halftime, as both teams struggled to crack the other team's defense. The Dragons held the Pumas to 44 yards rushing and 177 yards through the air, while St. Joseph's held TU to 251 yards of total offense. Both teams had 19 first downs and 2 turnovers. Donnie Johnson passed for the game-winning score while catching the other touchdown TU scored on a 14 yard pass from Matt Root. Johnson had 43 yards rushing along with 14 yards receiving, while Pierece Wade had 44 yards rushing. Rahsan Wilson played a tremendous game defensively, totaling 8 tackles with 4 tackles for loss and 3 sacks. TU sacked Anthony Lindsey 6 times in the game, with Drew Douthit also getting 2 sacks. Parris Burt led the team with 9 tackles. Tiffin had 10 tackles for loss defensively. 

Tiffin University cracks back in Top 25 in latest AFCA poll

Tiffin University returned to the Top 25  in the country in the most recent AFCA poll. The Dragons, coming off a 35-17 win over Kentucky Wesleyan in their GLFC opener, now return home for a rematch of last year's GLFC Championship game with St. Joseph's at Homecoming on Sept. 13.

Dragons continues offensive explosion with 35-17 win over Kentucky Wesleyan

Tiffin University amassed a 35-10 lead by early in the fourth quarter and eventually won 35-17, improving to 5-1, 1-0 in the GLFC. Tiffin racked up 660 yards of offense on 96 plays, including 399 yards through the air.  Matt Root connected on 33 of 47 passes for 379 yards, with Dyshaun Edwards hauling in 14 passes for 181 yards and LaMar Tipton catching 9 passes for 143 yards. Perece Wade rushed for 116 yards while Alvin McKnight also gained 87 yards on the ground. Tiffin's defense held the Panthers to -36 yards on the ground. Tiffin also picked off three passes defensively.

Tiffin University climbed to 27th in the country in the most recent AFCA poll. The Dragons, coming off a 50-6 win at Gannon, now travel to Kentucky Wesleyan in their GLFC opener on Oct. 6. The Dragons had reached as high as 20th in the nation after week 3 in 2007.

Tiffin University dominated play all day at Gannon, improving to 4-1 with a 50-6 victory. The Dragons outgained Gannon 593-77 in total offense, including holding the Golden Knights to just 23 yards on the ground. Tiffin had 25 first downs to Gannon's 8. Big days all around for the Dragons offense, as Pierece Wade had 146 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns on 27 carries, Matt Root had 333 passing yards with 3 touchdowns on 23 of 34 completions, and Dyshaun Edwards hauled in 7 passes for 169 yards and 2 touchdowns. Henry Russell led the defense with 7 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, a forced fumble, and 2 deflections. The Dragons led 36-0 at halftime.

Tiffin University dropped back to 28th in the country in the most recent AFCA poll. The Dragons, coming off a bye week, now travel to Gannon University on Sept. 29. The Dragons had reached as high as 20th in the nation after week 3 in 2007. 

20th-ranked Dragons stumble against Panthers 30-22

Tiffin University rallied late but could not make up for a poor defensive showing, falling to 13th-ranked Ohio Dominican 30-22 for their first loss of 2007. Tiffin, which trailed at the half 9-7, allowed 519 yards of offense to the pass-happy Panthers, who connected on 37 of 61 passes for 366 yards and only 1 interception. ODU had 31 first downs to Tiffin's 12 and ran 41 more plays in the game than the Dragons. Tiffin totaled 260 yards of offense, 169 through the air. The Panthers led 30-7 with 12:12 left in the game when Tiffin rallied to score 15 unanswered points. The Dragons had a chance to get the ball back with 90 seconds left but could not contain Josh Smart on a run around left end for a first down that handed ODU the victory. Pierece Wade rushed for 67 yards on 16 carries, while LaMar Tipton had 120 yards receiving on 6 catches with 2 touchdowns.

Tiffin University was voted 20th in the country in the most recent AFCA poll. The Dragons, coming off a 34-14 victory over Glenville State College, were ranked 23rd in the poll one week ago. Last year the Dragons reached as high as 12th in the nation after opening 10-0. The Dragons finished the season ranked 17th.

23rd-ranked Dragons streak past Pioneers 34-14

The Dragons scored 21 points in the first quarter and led 28-7 at halftime en route to a 34-14 victory over Glenville State that saw a one hour delay at halftime due to lightning and a rain-slogged second half. Tiffin intercepted Glenville State on their opening possession and turned it into a 4 yard TD pass from matt Root to Tom Fritsch to open scoring at 13:37 of the 1st quarter. Donnie Johnson then hauled in a 31 yard TD toss from Root, one of four touchdown passes in the game for Root. After a GSU TD made it 14-7, Tiffin's Dyshaun Edwards caught a 47-yard bomb from Root that made it 21-7 at the end of the first quarter. Alvin McKnight caught a 17-yard TD from Root for the only scoring in the second quarter as TU led by 21 at the lengthy break. After the lightning delay, TU got two field goals from Andrew Breen (29 and 33 yards) to cap off their scoring. TU outgained GSU 365-176, including 258 yards through the air. They had no turnovers in the game while intercepting GSU twice. Root finished with 218 yards on 17 of 23 passing with 4 TDs and no interceptions, while Donnie Johnson had 10 catches for 119 yards. Pierece Wade rushed for 86 yards in just over one quarter of work late in the game, while Parris Burt had 13 tackles with a sack. TU's defense had 6 sacks on the night and 14 tackles for loss. Luke Seal also had 10 tackles on the defensive line with a sack and 2 tackles for loss, while Steve Yarbrough had 8 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, a sack, 2 interceptions with 31 yards in returns, and 2 deflections. 

Douthit gives TU second straight D2Football.com honor

For the second consecutive week, a Dragons defensive standout has earned D2Football.com's Independent Defensive Player of the Week  honor. Drew Douthit earned the honor to go along with his GLFC Defensive POW award after his 3 sack performance against Clarion.

Tiffin University's Matt Root and Drew Douthit led the 23rd-ranked Dragons to a 38-10 win over Clarion, garnering GLFC Player of the Week honors in the process. Root, a junior quarterback, tossed 5 touchdowns on 20 of 27 passing for 269 yards in the game. Douthit, meanwhile, had 3 sacks and a fumble forced as the Dragons enjoyed another solid defensive outing. For more, click here.

Tiffin University was voted 23rd in the country in the most recent AFCA poll. The Dragons, coming off a 38-10 victory over Clarion University, were ranked 28th in the poll one week ago. Last year the Dragons reached as high as 12th in the nation after opening 10-0. The Dragons finished the season ranked 17th.

28th-ranked Dragons overwhelm Clarion 38-10 for second victory

The Dragons turned up the offense on the road against Clarion, winning 38-10 while racking up 617 yards of total offense. A balanced attack (308 yards rushing, 309 yards passing) was the story for TU's offense, which was led by quarterback Matt Root's 269 yards and 5 touchdowns on 20 of 27 passing. Alvin McKnight had 178 rushing yards while Pierece Wade debuted with 81 rushing yards. The Dragons defense held Clarion to just 77 yards on the ground, as they amassed a 31-10 halftime lead. Donnie Johnson caught three touchdown passes while also rushing for 40 yards, while Dyshaun Edwards also caught a 68 yard touchdown pass. Lamar Tipton caught Root's other TD toss, and Andrew Breen also had a field goal. The Dragons next come home for a 7 p.m. game with Glenville State (WV) on Sept. 8.

Burt registered 13 tackles with a critical forced fumble in the fourth quarter as Concord was driving in Dragons territory that preserved the Dragons lead. Tiffin's defense held Concord to 195 yards of total offense, including just 86 rushing yards.

Parris Burt earned GLFC Defensive Player of the Week honors, leading the Dragons to a 23-16 win over Concord University. Burt registered 13 tackles with a critical forced fumble in the fourth quarter as Concord was driving in Dragons territory that preserved the Dragons lead. Tiffin's defense held Concord to 195 yards of total offense, including just 86 rushing yards.

Tiffin University, ranked 27th in the AFCA Preseason Coaches poll, edged out Concord 23-16 in a defensive battle in their season opener. The Dragons held a 17-16 halftime lead and added a touchdown in the third quarter, as their defense played tough throughout the second half for the win. Tiffin held Concord to 195 yards of total offense, 102 on the ground. Alvin McKnight rushed for 81 tough yards on 19 carries with a 1-yard touchdown run, while Dyshaun Edwards had 79 yards receiving on 5 catches, including a 36 yard touchdown catch. Troy Brookins had a 71 yard kickoff return leading to another score, while Matt Root was 13 of 18 passing for 139 yards and a touchdown. Tiffin overcame three fumbles lost with hard hitting defense, led by Parris Burt with 13 tackles and a big fumble forced late in the game. Wyatt Thames had 3 tackles for loss with 3 sacks. (more)

Tiffin lands 10 players, St. Joseph's 9 on D2Football.com Preseason All-Independent team

Tiffin University had 10 players selected to the D2Football.com Preseason All-Independents Team, with St. Joseph's College right behind with 9 selections. A total of 33 Great Lakes Football Conference athletes were selected to fill the 52 spots, with Missouri-Rolla (6 selections), Central State (5), Lincoln (2), and Kentucky Wesleyan (1) all garnering selections.

For the Dragons, defensive end Joe Crawford, defensive tackle Luke Seal, linebacker Steve Yarbrough, cornerback Troy Brookins, kicker Andrew Breen, and kick returner Troy Brookins were all First Team picks. Tight end Sean Ostrowski, offensive tackle Zeno Dabbelt, guard Ryan Routhier, and linebacker Parris Burt were Second Team picks.

For the Pumas, quarterback Anthony Lindsey, wide receiver Dan Paulsen, center Mitch Dean, linebackers Rob Perricone and Fred Blanton, and cornerback DeQwan Young were First Team picks, while guard Lee Shaver, cornerback Lance Burns, and running back Greg Ford were Second Team selections.

Spring game ends in 14-14 tie  

Tiffin University's Black squad tied the White squad 14-14 in the 2007 Annual Spring Football Game played in front of hundreds at Frost-Kalnow Stadium Saturday evening. Quarterback Matt Root tossed two touchdowns for the Black squad, connecting with Cody Koselke and and Mike Lento, while White squad quarterback Donnie Johnson ran for one score and passed to Angelino Kramer for another score.

Dragons sign 21 athletes to program

Tiffin University Dragon Football Head Coach Nate Cole announces a 2007 recruiting class of 21 student-athletes signing National Letters of Intent and Scholarships to attend Tiffin University and play football.  The class is made up of recruits from three states: 18 from Ohio, 2 from Michigan, and 1 from New York. (more)

Brookins, Crawford earn All-Region honors

Troy Brookins and Joe Crawford were named Third Team All-Northwest Region players by Don Hansen's Football Gazette. Crawford is a 6-6 sophomore defensive end, while Brookins, a 6-0 sophomore, was honored as a return specialist.

Brookins earns D2Football.com honor

Troy Brookins was named Second Team All-Northwest Region by the staff of D2Football.com. Brookins was the only GLFC athlete so honored by the organization, which named 52 athletes from the Northwest Region to the First and Second Team.  

Four Dragons earn GLFC Position Player of the Year honors

Four Dragons football players were named Players of the Year at their respective positions, as the 2006 GLFC All-Conference team was selected by vote of the GLFC coaches. Nathan Karn (Offensive Lineman of the Year), Luke Seal (Defensive Lineman of the Year), Steve Yarbrough (Linebacker of the Year), and Troy Brookins (Defensive Back of the Year) all earned top honors for Tiffin. Other First Team selections included Sean Ostrowski (TE) and Rob Cameron (OL) on offense, and Joe Crawford (DL), Nick Washington (DL), Steven Davis (LB), and Brookins (KR) on defense. Landing Second Team honors were Dyshaun Edwards (WR), Zeno Dabbelt (OL), and Brent Simonson (LB and Punter), while Donnie Johnson (QB), Ryan Routhier (OL), Bryceson Lawrence (DB), and Tremayne Johnson (DB) were Honorable Mention picks.

Tiffin University's outstanding season caught the attention of D2Football.com's staff, as the Dragons earned numerous selections to the 2006 All-Independents team. Tiffin's Tremayne Johnson earned Defensive Player of the Year honors, while Nate Cole was named Coach of the Year. First Team selections went to Nathan Karn (OL), Joe Crawford (DL), Nick Washington (DL), Steve Yarbrough (LB), Johnson (DB), and Troy Brookins (DB).
