Dragons wrap up spring season
Tiffin University Men’s soccer went 3-1 on their last weekend of their spring season. In the process the Dragons defeated their own Alumni, and local rivals Heidelberg University twice. The team's only loss was a 2-1 decision to Bluffton in which the Dragons couldn’t capitalize on numerous finishing chances. The Dragons ended up the spring with an overall record of 5-2-1. Next up will be pre-season starting August 10th .
Dragons see action with Cedarville, Findlay, Wright State
Tiffin University split a doubleheader against Cedarville and Findlay in their latest spring outing. In the first game Tiffin was able to outplay a very tough and hard-working Cedarville University. Tony Iyayi (Lagos, Nigeria) opened up the scoring in the 24th minute by
finishing a pass by Dennis Kroeze (Boarle Nassau, Holland). 11 minutes later Ashton Campbell (Luton, England) added the 2nd goal of the afternoon by finishing a break-away. After the break Steve
Morris (Delaware, OH) headed a cross by Rhys Cannella (Luton, OH) to give the Dragons a 3-0 lead. 8 minutes before the end of the contest Ryan Kiekbusch (Sterling Heights, MI) slotted a pass from Zach Smith (Ashland, OH) to settle the contest at 4-0.
In the second game, missed chances by the Dragons allowed Findlay to take a 2-0 lead at the 35 minute mark. That seemed to wake up the Dragons, as Rhys Canella gave Tony Iyayi a throw ball pass for his second goal of the evening, making the score 2-1. 2 Minutes later Adam Fussell (Stafford, England) passed the ball to an open Rabii Karanouh (Mississauga, Canada) for the equalizer. The Oilers and Dragons fought hard during the second half, but a defensive mistake gave the Oilers the final 3-2 lead at the 73 minute mark.
Tiffin University also traveled to Dayton, OH to battle division I foe Wright State. The Dragons came out flat in the first half and gave the Raiders a free kick from 22 yards out that they capitalized on. In the second half the Dragons came out to play when Tony Iyayi (Lagos, Nigeria) headed home a flick by Nick Kutch (Pittsburgh, PA) at the 56 minute mark. A long distance kick by Nick Kutch in the 78th minute produced another goal, this time Kyle Millinger (Port Clinton, OH) scored the 2nd goal for the evening for the Dragons. The lead didl not last long though, as 8 minutes later the Raiders scored again off a free kick to finish the game at 2-2, giving the Dragons a 2-1-1 record in the spring.

University's Jason Rager and Adi Vlad were named First Team OCSA Academic All-Ohio selections while Roger Kummer was a Second Team pick. The selections cover Ohio soccer athletes from Division I, II and the NAIA. Tiffin was the lone Division II institution with players selected to the teams. Brodnick, O'Neill earn All-Region honors
Tiffin
University's Paul Brodnick and Michael O'Neill were selected to the Daktronics Midwest Region team by vote of the College Sports Information Directors of America. Both teams earned Second Team honors with the selections, which were dominated by GLVC athletes. Only 5 GLIAC men's soccer players landed on the squads, with Ashland getting the other three nods. Brodnick was chosen as a defender and O'Neill as a midfielder. The Dragons won the GLIAC Championship and were ranked 6th in the Midwest Region.
Dragons win GLIAC Championship 4-2 over Saginaw Valley State

University (13-6, 5-3 GLIAC) finished a strong season with a solid 4-2 win in the GLIAC Championship game against Saginaw Valley State. The Dragons got out of the gate in strong fashion as Michael O'Neill scored in the 10th minute on a pass from Ashton Campbell. Campbell then continued his fantastic postseason with a goal from Roger Kummer in the 17th minute to give TU a 2-0 lead. After the Cardinals got a goal in the 29th minute, Ryan Kiekbusch put TU up 3-1 at the half off a corner kick from O'Neill. The Dragons made it 4-1 when Kummer scored on an 18 yard shot off a pass from Rhys Cannella, giving the Dragons a lead they would not relinquish. Jeff Frisch got the win in goal, making 3 saves. TU outshot SVSU 17-12.

Dragons eliminate Northwood 4-2 in GLIAC Semifinals
Tiffin University (12-6, 5-3 GLIAC) amassed a 3-1 lead en route to an eventualy 4-2 victory over Northwood in the GLIAC Semifinals at Ashland. TU fell behind in the 10th minute on a quick Northwood goal, but then scored the next four goals. Rhys Cannella got TU on the board in the 18th minute, and then GLIAC Player of the Year Ashton Campbell scored the first of two goals in the 38th minute on a pass from Ryan Kiekbusch. Tony Iyayi came off the bench to score in the 41st minute to give TU a 3-1 lead at the half. Campbell scored again in the 48th minute to finish off Tiffin's scoring. Northwood added another goal in the 61st minute but could get no closer despite outshooting the Dragons 18-14 on the night. Jeff Frisch played well in goal, allowing 2 goals over 90 minutes but also making 8 saves. TU now will play the winner of Saginaw Valley-Ashland Saturday.O'Neill named GLIAC Player of the Week (more)
Dragons pull out wild double overtime thriller at Findlay 2-1

University (11-6, 5-3 GLIAC) pulled out a wild 2-1 double overtime victory at Findlay in their regular season finale, with Michael O'Neill getting the gamewinner in the 109th minute on an unassisted goal. The game was scoreless at the half, but TU got on the board in the 67th minute on an own goal off a cross into the box. Findlay answered in the 77th minute as they got an own goal off a long pass into the box which was inadvertently headed by the Dragons into their own goal. TU outshot the Oilers 19-10, with Scott Felgar getting the win in goal after taking over at the half and playing the rest of the way. Felgar made 3 saves over his 64 minutes in the nets, while Jeff Frisch also had a save after 45 minutes. Vlad named First Team Academic All-District

University's Adi Vlad was named a First Team Academic All-District selection by CoSIDA. Vlad posted the top GPA among the 12 First Team picks, with a 4.00 in Information Technology. Vlad was also the lone GLIAC men's soccer player on the team.Dragons fall in narrow overtime loss at Ashland 1-0

University (10-6, 4-3 GLIAC) fought hard at Ashland in a pivotal GLIAC showdown, but ultimately fell 1-0 in the 95th minute in a game that also saw 7 yellow cards, a red card, and 38 total fouls. Ashland, which outshot TU 20-8, got the gamewinner when Aaron Favri headed home a goal in a mixer in front of the net. University (10-5, 4-2 GLIAC) shut down West Virginia Wesleyan, outshooting them 15-4 and allowing only one shot on goal as TU posted a 2-0 win. Paul Brodnick got the Dragons on the board in the 25th minute off a pass from Adi Vlad, taking a corner kick and heading it home. TU added another goal in the 70th minute as Rhys Cannella took a through ball from Byron Kaverman and scored on a breakaway. Jeff Frisch got the shutout in goal, making one save. University (9-5, 4-2 GLIAC) got the most of Tony Iyayi's 33 minutes of action, as he came off the bench to score 3 goals en route to a 5-1 win over Lake Erie College. TU's Adi Vlad got the first of 2 goals on the day in the 7th minute off a flick from Byron Kaverman. After Lake Erie equalized in the 20th minute, Iyayi took another Kaverman dish and scored in the 31st minute. Vlad drilled home a penalty kick after Iyayi was brought down in the box in the 39th minute to give TU a 3-1 halftime edge. Iyayi scored both goals in the second half, one off a free kick in the 68th minute, and another on a pass from Adam Shepherd in the 75th minute. Scott Felgar played 75 minutes in goal for the win, making 4 saves, while Kyle Moore finished out the final 15 minutes. TU outshot LEC 22-8.Kummer named GLIAC Player of the Week (more)
Kummer, Vlad excel in 4-1 win over Northwood

(8-5, 4-2 GLIAC) got strong play from Roger Kummer and Adi Vlad in a 4-1 win over Northwood. Kummer chipped in a goal and 2 assists while Vlad also had a goal and assist to lead the team. Dennis Kroeze got TU on the board in the 7th minute, scoring off Byron Kaverman's corner kick. After NU equalized in the 20th minute, Rhys Cannella put TU ahead to stay in the 23rd minute off a Kummer pass. After the halftime break, Vlad scored off another Kummer pass to expand TU's lead, and Kummer capped off the scoring on a pass from Vlad in the 60th minute. Jeff Frisch played 81 minutes in goal, making 3 saves and allowing 1 goal. Scott Felgar played the final 9:00, making 1 save. Dragons clip Cardinals 1-0 in narrow win

(7-5, 3-2 GLIAC) got a goal from Rhys Cannella in the 47th minute to open the second half on a great cross from Roger Kummer, as TU beat Saginaw Valley State 1-0. TU had outshot the Cardinals 6-1 at the half but couldn't put the ball in the back of the net until Cannella's shot just two minutes. (6-5, 2-2 GLIAC) battled back from two deficits but could not manage to do it three times, as Ashland got a goal in the 75th minute and held on to win 3-2. After the Eagles opened scoring in the 9th minute, Tiffin's Tony Iyayi tied it on a pass from Michael O'Neill in the 33rd minute. Ashland bounced right back just two minutes later to go ahead 2-1 at the halftime break. Ashton Campbell took another O'Neill pass and made it 2-2 in the 56th minute but the Eagles Ross Ashley got the gamewinner with 15 minutes to play. Tiffin University (6-4, 2-1 GLIAC) got a goal from Ashton Campbell in the 72nd minute off a pass from Michael O'Neill to beat Seton Hill on the road 3-2. TU had trailed early 1-0 but tied the score in the 36th minute on a goal from Byron Kaverman with Tony Iyayi getting the assist. O'Neill then tacked on another goal in the 40th minute to give TU a 2-1 halftime lead. Jeff Frisch played 90 minutes in goal, making 6 saves. Three goals in final 9 minutes send Dragons to defeat 4-3
Tiffin University (5-4, 2-1 GLIAC) held a 3-1 lead with 10 minutes to play but allowed three goals in the final 9 minutes to fall 4-3 at Northwood. In a wild game featuring 7 yellow cards and 30 fouls, TU got on the board first with a goal by Rhys Cannella from Nick Kutch from 13 yards out in the 26th minute that gave the Dragons a 1-0 halftime edge. The Dragons went up 2-0 when Adi Vlad took a crossing pass from Ashton Campbell and scored in the 66th minute. After Northwood tallied a goal in the 72nd minute, Michael O'Neill made a long run down left side from a Cannella pass and scored in the 78th minute to put TU up 3-1. Northwood made it 3-2 on Ross Aitchison's header in the 81st minute, then tied it in the 83rd minute on an Aitchison penalty kick. The winning goal for Northwood was scored with just 31 seconds left in regulation, as Fabio Ansaldo scored to give the Dragons their first GLIAC loss of the season. Tiffin University (5-3, 2-0 GLIAC) got two goals from Byron Kaverman en route to a 3-0 GLIAC win at Saginaw Valley State. Kaverman opened scoring in the 7th minute on an unassisted goal, and the Dragons made it 2-0 at halftime when Tony Iyayi scored on a pass from Ashton Campbell in the 41st minute. University (4-3, 1-0 GLIAC) picked up two late goals to beat Findlay 3-1 in their conference opener. In a game played in sustained 40 mph winds as the remnants of Hurricane Ike passed through the area, it was a tale of two halves, as the Oilers had the wind at their backs in the first half while the Dragons gained the advantage in the second half. After Brennan Williams opened scoring for Findlay with a goal in the 17th minute, TU equalized in the 20th minute when Michael O'Neill took a pass from Ashton Campbell and put it in the back of the net. After halftime, the Dragons' Adi Vlad gave TU the lead for good when he bent in a free kick with an assist to the wind in the 75th minute. TU scored an insurance goal to ice the game when O'Neill took another pass from Campbell to score in the 88th minute. Jeff Frisch was the winning goalkeeper, making 2 saves in 90 minutes. University (3-3) got two goals in the final 15 minutes to pull out a victory against visiting Urbana 3-2. After the Dragons posted a 1-0 halftime lead on Ashton Campbell's goal in the 24th minute, the Blue Knights equalized in the 71st minute on a penalty kick by Kyle Bertz. TU answered quickly, however, as Adi Vlad scored in the 75th minute off a pass from Michael O'Neill. TU added a much-needed insurance goal in the 79th minute as Rhys Cannella's header hit the back of the net off another assist from O'Neill. Urbana netted a goal in the 87th minute but could not get another shot off over the final three minutes. Roger Kummer picked up an assist in the game on Campbell's goal. Scott Felgar got the win in goal, making 2 saves and allowing 2 goals in 90 minutes. TU outshot Urbana 19-10, including 11-3 with shots on goal. Two late goals sink Dragons at Indianapolis 2-0

(2-3) battled Indianapolis in a close game before the Greyhounds scored two late goals to win 2-0. Indianapolis broke the deadlock in the 78th minute and tacked on an insurance goal in the 85th minute to put the game away. The Greyhounds outshot TU 24-10 in the game. Tiffin University (0-2) could not muster any offense against Missouri S&T, falling 2-0 after allowing two first half goals. The Miners opened scoring in the 15th minute on Andy Held's goal from Brandon Moore. They added another goal just before the half in the 38th minute when Jon Goecker finished a pass from Ryan Muich off a corner kick. The Dragons had a number of chances in the first half but could not put the ball in the net. TU was outshot just 13-12 in the game, but were outshot in the second half 7-4. Tiffin University played a disappointing opener, falling 4-1 to Roberts Wesleyan. The Dragons never seemed to get on track, allowing 3 first half goals. The first came three minutes in off a free kick tipped in by Nick Clancy. In the 12th minute Femi Arogundade scored the first of two goals to make it 2-0, and Dan Lobene made it 3-0 before halftime on a header off a pass from Arogundade. Arogundade had another goal in the 56th minute, as TU could not manage a shot on goal until the 77th minute. Roger Kummer got the lone goal for TU in the 87th minute off a pass from Gabriel Acha. Scott Felgar started in goal for TU, playing 45 minutes and allowing 3 goals while making 3 saves. Jeff Frisch played the final 45 minutes, allowing 1 goal and making 4 saves. Tiffin University just missed a first place pick in the 2008 GLIAC Men's Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll, as Northwood got 14 points and Tiffin 13. Northwood and the Dragons each got 2 first place votes, while Saginaw Valley State also got a first place vote and was third with 10 points. Ashland (7 points) was fourth, and Findlay (6 points) was fifth in the poll. TU went 4-2 against GLIAC opponents last year while playing an independent schedule. Dragons earn more academic honors
Tiffin's Mircea Handru and Adi Vlad both earned First Team All-Ohio Academic honors from the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association for the 2007 season. The honor recognized athletes from NCAA Division I, II and the NAIA.Dragons Soccer earns top academic honor
Tiffin's men's and women's soccer teams both earned NSCAA Team Academic Awards for the 2007 year. A total of 414 soccer teams met the minimum requirement of a 3.00 team GPA, but only 74 schools received men's and women's recognition.
Vlad, Handru named Academic All-ICAA
Tiffin's Mircea Handru and Adi Vlad were Academic All-ICAA selections for men's soccer. Vlad was the top honoree with a 4.00 GPA in Information Systems, while Handru was at 3.67 in Managerial Studies.
Five Dragons land All-Independent honors
Tiffin's Tony Iyayi and Nick Dreshaj were repeat First Team All-ICAA selections as the national All-Independent teams were announced. Joining them on the First Team was Adi Vlad. Second Team picks were Mircea Handru and Roger Kummer. The ICAA is composed of Tiffin, Truman State, Columbia Union, Flagler, Brevard, Palm Beach Atlantic, the University of DC, Chowan, Upper Iowa, and North Greenville.
Handru named to Great Lakes Region team
Tiffin's Mircea Handru was named Second Team All-Great Lakes Region by vote of the region sports information directors. Handru, a senior from Cly-Napoca, Romania, played sweeper for the 10-6-1 Dragons in their first year of exclusive NCAA II competition, posting 4 goals and 3 assists for 11 points.
