The first season in the GLIAC (Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) was successful for the men’s soccer team in 2008.  They will be looking to sustain that success this coming season.  The men’s soccer team is coming off a season where they went 13-6, finishing the season in strong fashion by winning their last three games to win the GLIAC Tournament Championship.

The Dragons will look to replace some key losses from last year. Gone from the squad are Adi Vlad and Byron Kaverman, a pair of players that combined for ten goals and six assists last year.  Tiffin has a good mix of experienced players that are ready to step in.  One of the top returners is sophomore Ashton Campbell who was named Offensive Player of the Year in the GLIAC.  Campbell finished with 8 goals and 6 assists for 22 points. Another top returner is sophomore Michael O’Neill who was second in points last year with 19.  O’Neill was voted to the All Region team last year and twice was Player of the Week in the GLIAC.  Tony Iyayi is also returning to the team and has contributed on the field with his leadership and offensive ability. Iyayi was on the All GLIAC First Team last season.

On defense the top returner is Paul Brodnik.  Paul was Second Team All GLIAC last year and looks to excel in his senior season. Tuomo Kallio and Gabriel Acha are a couple of other senior defenders who add experience to the Tiffin backfield.  A talented freshmen class should also make an impact. Coach Brownell noted, “This recruiting class will have an impact on our current players, adding competition at every position.”

The goal for the Dragons is to reach the NCAA Tournament. Moving up in the regional rankings will be key to achieving that goal. The team just missed the cut last year. With the experience coming back mixed with the fresh new talent, this could be a combination that makes for a very successful season. This year the men will have a bigger target on their backs.  After their big tournament win and an impressive spring the men’s team is voted to finish second in the GLIAC this season.  The team voted first and their biggest competition this year is Ashland University.  Ashland finished first last year in the regular season, but came up short in the postseason tourney. The rivalry between the two teams as well as the tough GLIAC competition overall should lead to an exciting season.
