Total of 76 athletes earn Spring GLIAC Academic honors

Tiffin University had 76 spring athletes that landed GLIAC All-Academic honors, as the conference announced its spring academic honorees. Overall 565 GLIAC athletes were honored. Baseball (22) and Men's Track (23) had the most honored sports in the conference in their respective sports. For the complete list, click here.

Dragons end season with loss to Ohio Northern

The Dragons (1-25) lost its final match of the season to Ohio Northern 8-1. Harry Smith won at first singles 6-4, 6-3, while Andres Torres lost a tough second singles match 6-4, 5-7, 4-10. Smith/Torres and Ryan Toporowsky/Preston Torbert lost doubles matches 4-8.

Dragons drop third match at GLIAC tourney 5-1

The Dragons (1-24) fell to Lake Superior State 5-1 for their third loss at the GLIAC tourney. Bryan Heisler/Preston Torbert picked up the lone win 8-5 while Harry Smith lost the next closest match in singles play 2-6, 4-6. Ryan Toporowsky/Matt Weiss also lost in doubles play 3-8.

Dragons fall to Northwood, Michigan Tech in GLIAC tourney 5-0

The Dragons (1-23) fell to Northwood and Michigan Tech in the opening rounds of the GLIAC tourney by identical 5-0 scores. The Dragons won a total of three games over five matches as the top-rated Timberwolves dominated play. Harry Smith/Andres Torres fell 1-8 at first doubles, while Matt Weiss and Bryan Heisler both fell 0-6, 1-6 in singles play. Against Michigan Tech, Torres and Ryan Toporowsky fell in singles play 6-3, 6-2, while Toporowsky/Weiss and Preston Torbert/Heisler fell 2-8.

Dragons drop match to Wooster 7-2

The Dragons (1-21) got a hard fought win at second singles from Andres Torres 4-6, 6-4, 11-9 but dropped a couple other close matches en route to a 7-2 loss to Wooster. Harry Smith fell at first singles 5-7, 6-3, 7-10, while Smith/Torres lost at first doubles 8-9 (5-7). TU's other victory came at third doubles, where Preston Torbert/Bryan Heisler won 8-2.

Findlay drops Dragons 6-3

The Dragons (1-20) picked up a pair of singles victories but ultimately fell to Findlay on the road 6-3. Matt Weiss won at fifth singles 6-0, 6-3 while Bryan Heisler won at sixth singles 4-6, 6-1, 10-6. Ryan Toporowsky also lost a close third singles match 1-6, 6-3, 5-7. TU's other win came from third doubles where Heisler/Preston Torbert won 8-5. Harry Smith/Andres Torres lost at first singles 6-8. 

Panthers down Dragons 7-2

The Dragons (1-19) got a singles win from Ryan Toporowsky 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 10-4, but couldn't pick up enough wins elsewhere as Ohio Dominican won 7-2. Harry Smith/Andres Torres were the other winners for TU, winning 8-2. Smith also lost a close singles match 6-3, 6-7, 5-7, while Torres also fell 4-6, 4-6.

Lake Superior State streaks past Dragons 9-0

The Dragons (1-18) were dominated by Lake Superior State in singles play, eventually falling 9-0. TU won a total of 13 games in 6 singles matches, with Bryan Heisler posting the closest match at sixth singles in a 4-6, 0-6 loss. The doubles matches were closer but TU still could not pick up a win, with Ryan Toporowsky/Matt Weiss fell 8-9 after a 5-7 tiebreak. Heisler/Preston Torbert fell 6-8, and Harry Smith/Andres Torres lost 4-8.

TU falls to Michigan Tech 9-0

The Dragons (1-17) could not win a match against Michigan Tech, falling 9-0. Harry Smith lost at first singles 5-7, 6-1, 7-10 while Andres Torres also lost a three-set match at second singles 7-5, 3-6, 3-6. The other singles matches were straight set losses, while the closest doubles match was at first doubles where Smith/Torres fell 5-8.

TU drops 8-1 decision to Cedarville

The Dragons (1-16) got a win from Harry Smith at first singles 6-1, 6-0 but could not manage any more wins in a 8-1 loss to Cedarville. Andres Torres lost a tough match at second singles 5-7, 6-2, 9-11 while Ryan Toporowsky lost 3-6, 5-7. The doubles team of Bryan Heisler/Matt Weiss fell 7-9.

TU falls to Warriors 9-0 in GLIAC matchup

The Dragons (1-15) could not pick up a point against Wayne State, falling 9-0 to the Warriors. Andres Torres fell in the day's closest match, falling at second singles 1-6, 6-4, 1-10, while Harry Smith lost at first singles 6-7, 2-6. Bryan Heisler lost 4-6, 4-6, and Matt Weiss lost 5-7, 1-6. The closest doubles match was at second doubles, where Heisler/Ryan Toporowsky lost 3-8.

The Dragons (1-14) fell to Northwood 9-0, with Harry Smith falling at first singles 4-6, 0-6. TU won just two other games in five singles matches. The closest doubles match was at second doubles, where Ryan Toporowsky/Bryan Heisler fell 3-8.

TU falls at Mount Union 8-1

The Dragons (1-13) got a win from Harry Smith at first singles 6-4, 6-1 but could not manage another win, falling at Mount Union 8-1. Bryan Heisler/Ryan Toporowsky had the next closest match at second doubles, falling 4-8, while Smith/Andres Torres lost 3-8 at first doubles.

TU drops pair of 9-0 matches at Aquinas, Grand Valley State

The Dragons (1-12) fell to 22nd-ranked (NAIA) Aquinas 9-0, with Harry Smith losing in the closest match at first singles 4-6, 3-6. Andres Torres lost at second singles 3-6, 2-6 while the other singles matches were also straight set losses. TU then travelled to Grand Valley State and fell 9-0, with Smith losing another close one 4-6, 5-7. All the singles matches were lost in straight sets, with the closest doubles match coming at second doubles. Bryan Heisler/Ryan Toporowsky fell 3-8.

TU falls at Ferris State 9-0 in GLIAC opener

The Dragons (1-10) were shut out in their GLIAC opener, falling at Ferris State 9-0. Harry Smith lost the closest singles match 4-6, 4-6 at first singles. The doubles teams of Smith/Andres Torres, Ryan Toporowsky/Bryan Heisler, and Preston Torbert/Matt Weiss all fell by 4-8 scores. All the other singles matches were straight set losses.

TU gets first win against Shepherd 6-3, falls to Stonehill 9-0

The Dragons (1-9) picked up their first win of 2009, downing Shepherd 6-3. The deciding match came in a tough victory from freshman Matt Weiss, who won at fifth singles 5-7, 6-4, 13-11, and overall the Dragons took five of the six singles matches. Harry Smith won 6-0, 6-2, Andres Torres won 6-3, 6-1, Ryan Toporowsky took third singles 6-7, 6-0, 10-5, and Preston Torbert won sixth singles 6-2, 6-4. Bryan Heisler/Toporowsky also won at second doubles 8-6. Earlier in the day, TU fell to Stonehill 9-0, with Toporowsky's 4-6, 3-6 loss at third singles being the closest match. Heisler/Toporowsky also lost a close second doubles match 4-8.

TU shut out by Tusculum 9-0

The Dragons (0-8) took on a tough Tusculum squad and were shutout 9-0. Harry Smith fell at first singles 2-6, 6-7 and Andres Torres fell at second singles 1-6, 6-7. The closest doubles match was at third doubles, where Preston Torbert/Matt Weiss fell 4-8.

TU falls to Gettysburg 7-2

The Dragons (0-7) couldn't handle Gettysburg in their second South Carolina match, falling 7-2. Gettysburg dominated play, sweeping five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Andres Torres got the lone singles win at second singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win. TU also got a win at first doubles from Harry Smith/Torres 8-5.

TU drops narrow decision to Emory & Henry 5-4

The Dragons (0-6) lost a close match with Emory & Henry 5-4. TU got singles wins at fifth singles from Matt Weiss 6-2, 7-6 and at sixth singles from Preston Torbert 1-6, 7-5, 10-7 and another win at third doubles from Weiss/Torbert 8-5. The second doubles team of Bryan Heisler/Ryan Toporowsky also won 8-5. Close losses came at first singles where Harry Smith fell 3-6, 6-3, 3-10 and at first doubles from Smith/Andres Torres 5-8. Torres, Toporowsky, and Heisler fell in singles play.

TU falls to Charleston 8-1

The Dragons (0-5) lost a number of super tiebreakers in an 8-1 loss to Charleston in the first match of their spring trip. Harry Smith got the lone win for the Dragons with a 6-1, 1-6, 13-11 battle at first singles, while Matt Weiss lost at fifth singles 0-6, 7-6, 6-10 and Preston Torbert fell at sixth singles 6-4, 2-6, 3-10. Smith/Andres Torres also lost a close one at first doubles 6-8, with Charleston dominated play in the remaining matches.

TU falls at Northwestern Ohio 8-1

The Dragons (0-4) got a victory at 2nd singles but that was all as they fell at Northwestern Ohio 8-1. Andres Torres won a tough singles match 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 to pick up the Dragons lone win. The other singles losses were all straight sets, with Harry Smith's 1st singles 6-4, 6-3 defeat being the closest one. Smith/Torres also had the closest doubles loss, falling 6-8.

TU drops spring opener 8-1 at Baldwin Wallace

The Dragons (0-3) dropped their spring opener 8-1 at Baldwin Wallace, with Harry Smith the lone winner for TU at first singles. Smith won 6-1, 6-3 while the other Dragons losses came in straight sets. Andres Torres had the closest match, falling at second singles 1-6, 4-6.

TU drops fall opener to Otterbein 6-3

The Dragons (0-1) won three singles matches but could not make up for two defaults and a forfeit, as a shorthanded TU squad fell to Otterbein 6-3 in their fall opener. Harry Smith won at first singles 6-2, 6-0, Ryan Toporowsky won at second singles 6-3, 1-6, 13-11, and Bryan Heisler won at third singles 0-6, 6-2, 10-7. Smith/Toporowsky lost a narrow match at first doubles 6-8, while Heisler/Cory Boyes fell at second doubles 4-8. Boyes also lost a singles match 2-6, 1-6.
