The Tiffin University Track & Field teams competed at three Invitationals over the weekend, with four school records being set and two athletes qualifying for the NCAA outdoor championships. At the Stan Lyons Invitational, hosted by Butler University, Ramone Brant’s time of 14.47 seconds in the 110 meter hurdle event gave him the ninth best time in Division II and qualifies him for NCAA nationals. Andrea Bader broke two school records at Butler, breaking her previous marks in the 100 & 200 meter dash events with times of 12.11 and 24.83 seconds, respectively.
At the 42nd annual GINA Relays, hosted by Hillsdale College, Jeremy Lee took second place in the 1500 meter run with a time of 3:53.56, while Thomas Buxton’s time of 1:54.34 in the 800 meter run was just two seconds off the school record held by Pat Manders.
Both men’s and women’s teams had strong showings at the Robert Kahn Invitational, hosted by Oberlin College. The men finished second out of nine teams, falling short by only two points behind Oberlin, while the Lady Dragons tied for third with Wittenberg College out of eight teams, finishing behind Oberlin and Notre Dame College. Keith Reiter’s event win in the pole vault, with a mark of 4.97 meters, set a new school record and qualifies Reiter for the NCAA Championships; Reiter currently ranks sixth nationally among Division II student-athletes in the pole vault event. Kristen Ameling set a new school record and won the women’s shot put event with a mark of 13.26 meters, edging out teammates Cara Roach (11.64m) and Kathy Kernen (11.54m) in the finals. Ramone Brant won the 110 meter hurdle event at Oberlin with a time of 14.98 seconds, while Dan Snyder won the javelin throw with a mark of 48.85 meters, edging out Dragons Don Graber (43.85m) and Matt Saam (38.09m) in the finals. The women’s discus throw event had some excitement, with three Lady Dragons entering the finals tied with a mark of 36.59 meters. Rachel Fitzwater won the event with a mark of 34.98 meters in the finals, while Kernen finished second (34.56m) and Melissa Jones placed third (34.05m). Angela Betterley earned the Dragons sixth event victory at Oberlin, winning the 400 meter hurdle event with a time of 1:09.65. Other notable performances for the women’s team include: Maria Shaw placing second in the 800 meter run (2:25.00); Jasmine Hopkins finishing second in the 200 meter dash (26.33 seconds); Bader ( 12.32 seconds) and Hopkins (12.58 seconds) placing second and third, respectively, in the 100 meter dash; Jennifer Mitsoff taking second in the pole vault competition (3.05m); and Katrina Schumacker taking second in the triple jump event (9.75m).
