Dragons name honorees at annual banquet
Tiffin University honored the standouts on the team for the 2007-08 season at their annual banquet on April 13. There were two awards given out that were statistic-based: Charge Award - Fallon Sanborn with 14 charges on the year & Best Rebounder Award - Leanne Lucius with 8 rpg/221 on the season. There were three awards that were voted on by the players: Newcomer of the Year Award - Megan Fletcher, Heart & Hustle Award - Fallon Sanborn and Dragon Award (a person of character & integrity on and off the court) Leanne Lucius.
Three Dragons earn All-Independent honors
Tiffin University (12-15) landed three players on the All-ICAA Division II squad, with Leanne Lucius earning her second All-ICAA honor with a Second Team pick along with teammate Megan Fletcher. Kylene Spiegel also earned her second All-ICAA honor, this year landing on the Third Team.Dragons end season with big road upset of Gannon 68-56
Tiffin University (12-15) ended their season on a positive note, posting a big road upset of Gannon 68-56 behind 25 points and 10 rebounds by Leanne Lucius. TU led 30-22 at the half and outscored Gannon in the paint 26-18. Kylene Spiegel had 17 points and 7 assists while Megan Fletcher added 10 points. Alexis Karel also had 9 points and 8 rebounds. TU shot 46 percent in the game while holding Gannon to just 32 percent in the game.
Second-half drought leads to Dragons defeat 77-54
Tiffin University (11-15) led by 10 in the first half and 36-32 at the half, but a 24-0 run to start the second half by Hillsdale led directly to a big 77-54 loss to the Chargers. Fallon Sanborn led TU with 11 points while Kylene Spiegel and Alexis Karel had 10 apiece, but a 19 percent shooting effort by the Dragons in the second half coupled with a 59 percent effort from Hillsdale was too much to overcome. Hillsdale won the second half scoring edge 45-18.
Turnovers cost Dragons in 64-58 loss to Warriors
Tiffin University (11-14) had 26 turnovers leading to 25 Wayne State points, as the Warriors won the rematch with TU 64-58, avenging a 19-point loss earlier in the season to the Dragons. TU trailed by double digits throughout most of the first half before making a run to cut the halftime deficit to 34-28. TU once again fell behind by double digits in the second half before battling back and taking a one point lead with 6:00 to play. TU trailed by just three points with 90 seconds left but could not equalize and the Warriors hit key free throws down the stretch to put the game away. Leanne Lucius had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Dragons while Megan Fletcher led offensively with 15 points.
Lucius named Second Team Academic
Tiffin University's Leanne Lucius was named CoSIDA Second Team All-District Academic by vote of CoSIDA members. The junior New Riegel native posted a 4.00 GPA and is majoring in Marketing.
Dragons use second half to clip Oaks 69-61
Tiffin University (11-13) shot 61 percent in the second half, battling back from a 34-30 halftime deficit to beat Oakland City 69-61. The Dragons also held the Oaks to 26 percent shooting after halftime. Kylene Spiegel and Megan Jesulaitis scored 14 points apiece for TU, while Fallon Sanborn, Alexis Karel, and Megan Fletcher all scored 11 points apiece. Leanne Lucius and Holly Focke led TU with 7 rebounds each.
Dragons fall in closing seconds 70-66 to Northwood
Tiffin University (10-13) battled back numerous times from 11 point deficits, taking the lead a couple of times late in the second half, but could not hold on as they fell 70-66 to Northwood. The Dragons had a chance on a missed free throw to get the rebound and set up a tying three point attempt with 20 seconds left, but Northwood's Megan Starnes snatched the rebound to secure the victory. Leanne Lucius played well, totaling 14 points with 10 rebounds, while Kylene Spiegel also had 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists, and Alexis Karel also had 14 points.
Dragons drop rematch with Central State 62-48
Tiffin University (10-12) struggled through a poor shooting night, shooting 32 percent from the floor, including a 4-for-15 night from three-point, in a 62-48 loss at Central State. TU also committed 25 turnovers, falling away in the second half after trailing only 30-26 at halftime. Kylene Spiegel led TU with 14 points, while Megan Fletcher was the only other Dragons player in double figures with 10 points and 6 rebounds. Leanne Lucius had 7 points and 9 rebounds, while Holly Focke also had 7 points and 6 rebounds.Poor second half costs Dragons in 86-71 loss
Tiffin University (10-11) enjoyed a 42-35 halftime lead but watched it disappear in the second half as they were outscored 51-29 en route to a 86-71 loss to Saginaw Valley State. The Dragons shot 53 percent in the first half and just 36 percent in the second half. After falling behind by 11 points early in the second half, TU battled back to within a point before the Cardinals went on another run and effectively put the game away. Leanne Lucius led TU with 21 points, while Megan Fletcher had 16 points but struggled from the field, hitting on just 6 of 16 shots. Alexis Karel scored 10 points with 7 rebounds, while Fletcher also had 7 rebounds. TU was also outscored at the line 21-5, as SVSU hit on 21 of 22 free throws.
Dragons hot streak continues with 73-58 win over Findlay
Tiffin University (10-10) won for the fourth time in their last five games, avenging a 5-point loss to Findlay on Dec. 30 with a 73-58 win at home. TU put a run together in the final 1:00 of the first half to give them a 38-29 halftime lead and, after holding off a Oilers charge that cut the lead to 4 points midway through the second half, regrouped to push the lead to as high as 18 points. Tiffin controlled the boards 39-26 and shot 54 percent in the game while holding Findlay to 37 percent from the field. Megan Fletcher totaled 17 points off the bench, while Leanne Lucius had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Kylene Spiegel had 14 points and 9 assists, while Megan Jesulaitis also buried 3 three-pointers for 9 points. Fallon Sanborn and Alexis Karel also had 8 points each in a balanced attack.
Treys, second half sends Dragons to 77-69 victory
Tiffin University (9-10) used 36 points off of three-pointers to post a 77-69 win at Oakland City. The Dragons, who outscored OCU 42-35 in the second half, also controlled the rebounds, grabbing a 47-39 edge while holding Oakland City to 33 percent field goal shooting. Leanne Lucius had 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Holly Focke also played strong underneath with 10 rebounds. Megan Fletcher had 14 points, and Alexis Karel and Elyse Schlump added 10 more points in the post.Strong first half propels Dragons to 79-66 victory

Tiffin's defense forced 21 UPJ turnovers, while TU was also efficient at the free throw line, hitting 15 of 18 shots. Tiffin University (7-10) was outscored 14-7 over the final minutes of the first half, giving Ashland a solid 44-36 halftime lead and an eventual 79-65 victory. The Dragons fell behind by 15 points early in the second half and could not manage to put together a run to get back into the game. The Eagles hit 21 of 24 free throws while TU went 9 for 15 from the line, while Ashland also shot 50 percent for the game to Tiffin's 41 percent. Megan Fletcher scored 14 points with 6 rebounds and Megan Jesulaitis added 12 points. Kylene Spiegel had 9 assists and 6 rebounds while Leanne Lucius also chipped in 9 points.
Dragons dominate play in 90-54 win over Ohio Valley
Tiffin University (7-9) controlled play decisively in a big 90-54 win over Ohio Valley. The Dragons outrebounded OVU 56-34 and canned 12 three pointers. TU held Ohio Valley to 29 percent shooting in the game and outscored them 47-21 off the bench. Megan Fletcher had 22 points and 7 assists to lead TU while Megan Jesulaitis added 21 points with 5 three pointers. Leanne Lucius had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Holly Focke had 10 rebounds along with 6 points.
Dragons come up just short 67-62 at Findlay
Tiffin University (6-9) trailed 33-26 at the half but nearly pulled off a comeback victory, pulling to within 5 points with 90 seconds left before falling 67-62 at Findlay. Findlay's bench outscored Tiffin 36-21 in a very close game that saw five lead changes. Megan Fletcher again led the Dragons with 19 points off the bench along with 11 rebounds, while Kylene Spiegel had 12 points. Leanne Lucius chipped in 10 points and 9 rebounds.
Dragons use free throw line to post 66-56 win over West Liberty
Tiffin University (6-8) canned 18 of 19 free throws while West Liberty hit only 2 of 3 shots from the line, as TU raced to a 30-22 halftime edge and eventually won 66-56 at the Findlay Classic. Megan Fletcher led the way with 20 points, while Alexis Karel added 17 points and 9 rebounds. Kylene Spiegel had 14 points and Leanne Lucius hit the boards hard to lead TU with 11 rebounds. Tiffin University (5-8) got a strong offensive performance against Southern Indiana in their Bahamas finale, beating the Eagles 90-78. The Dragons shot 52 percent in the first half, taking a 51-36 lead into the break. The Dragons were lethal from three point land, canning 14 of 27 shots (51 percent) on the night. Leanne Lucius had 29 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way, while Kylene Spiegel added 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 10 assists. Tiffin (4-8) shot just 18 percent in the first half en route to a 33-16 halftime deficit, but stormed back in the second half, shooting 52 percent and nearly pulling off the comeback, falling just short 66-62 to Mount Olive College at the Bahamas Shootout. Poor first half shooting combined with a big rebounding disadvantage (59-46) and poor bench play (14-3) to sink the Dragons. Megan Fletcher was one of three TU players in double figures, leading with 17 points, while Alexis Karel had 15 points and 12 rebounds. Tiffin (4-7) continued their solid play of late, jumping out early on Mercyhurst in leading 37-18 at the half and continuing on to win 75-49. The Dragons held the Lakers to just 32 percent field goal shooting in the game, including 24 percent in the first half. The Dragons dominated at just about every spot on the floor, outrebounding Mercyhurst 48-33 (18 offensive rebounds), committing just 12 turnovers, and outscoring the Lakers' bench 27-11. Tiffin (3-7) reversed a recent road trend, getting 19 points from their bench and spreading out their offensive attack in streaking past Wayne State on the road 79-60. Tiffin played one of their most solid, disciplined games, turning the ball over only 7 times while shooting 42 percent from three point land, burying 11 treys. Leanne Lucius had 19 points and 6 rebounds, Kylene Spiegel had 17 points, and Alexis Karel had 12 points. Megan Jesulaitis also had 9 points off the bench. TU led 39-26 at halftime and expanded their lead to as much as 21 points in the second half.Dragons drop game of inches to Ferris State 72-69
Tiffin (2-7) battled with Ferris State every step of the way, but the hot-shooting Bulldogs were rewarded with the narrow 72-69 victory. The Dragons forced 18 FSU turnovers, but the Bulldogs managed to shoot 58 percent in the second half, led by post player Rachel Folcik's 28 points and 11 rebounds. The Dragons were kept in the game largely by the three pointer, as the Dragons buried 9 treys. Kylene Spiegel led TU with 21 points, while Fallon Sanborn had 14 points, Leanne Lucius had 12 points and Megan Fletcher had 11 points. The game was marked by 10 lead changes, while TU shot 40 percent in the game.
Turnovers, rebounds sink Dragons 69-45 against Greyhounds
Tiffin (2-6) was outrebounded 44-29 and committed 20 turnovers leading to 24 Indianapolis points en route to a 69-45 loss. Indianapolis led at the half 31-19 and had only 10 turnovers in the game. Kylene Spiegel had 11 points, while Leanne Lucius and Holly Focke had 10 points each. TU shot just 31 percent in the game.
Turnovers, post defense hurt Dragons in 65-50 loss to Cardinals
Tiffin (2-5) had 20 turnovers leading to 20 points for Saginaw Valley State, while the Cardinals also outscored TU in the paint 20-8, beating the Dragons 65-50. TU, which shot 33 percent in the game, could not take advantage of a 37 percent second half shooting effort by the Cardinals to bounce back after halftime, which they trailed 34-25. Leanne Lucius led TU with 18 points and 8 rebounds, while Fallon Sanborn had 12 points. Megan Fletcher had a solid second half, including 7 of 8 from the line, to finish with 11 points. Lucius, Fletcher, and Sanborn, however, combined to score all but 9 Dragons points.
Strong second half leads to 71-62 win over Marauders
Tiffin (2-4) bounced back from a halftime deficit to beat Central State 71-62, outscoring the Marauders 39-29 in the second half. The Dragons shot a blistering 65 percent after halftime while holding the Marauders to just 29 percent shooting. Megan Fletcher had another strong game with 19 points and 3 blocks, while Fallon Sanborn had 15 points and 5 rebounds. Kylene Spiegel totaled 13 points with 8 assists while Leanne Lucius had 8 points and 12 rebounds. Lindsey McCabe also had 8 points and 9 rebounds. Tiffin also shot 56 percent from three point land in one of their best offensive performances yet this season.
Fletcher named ICAA Player of the Week
Tiffin's Megan Fletcher was named the Independent Player of the Week last week. Fletcher averaged 14 points and 4 rebounds in leading the Dragons to a 1-1 week. She shot 11 of 28 from the floor and 6 of 8 from the line. She posted 20 points, 4 steals, and 4 rebounds in leading TU to their first win of the year over Mercyhurst.
Dragons lose nailbiter 69-66 at Northwood
The Dragons (1-4), playing without starter Megan Fletcher, gave Northwood all they wanted, falling just short 69-66 on the road. The Dragons, who led by as much as 8 points late in the first half and 36-32 at halftime, fell in large part due to turnovers, as they committed 19 turnovers to Northwood's 9. The Dragons also got little production from their bench, as Leanne Lucius, Kylene Spiegel, and Fallon Sanborn scored all but 10 Dragons points. Spiegel was outstanding with 22 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals, while Lucius had 18 points and 12 rebounds. The Dragons (1-3) got their first win of the season against Mercyhurst, winning 74-63 after a strong second half performance. The Dragons led 32-29 at the half in a back-and-forth affair, but forced numerous turnovers down the stretch to eventually build a 11 point lead. TU forced 22 turnovers in the game while committing only 14. Megan Fletcher broke out for 20 points, while Fallon Sanborn had 13 and Leanne Lucius had 11 points and 9 rebounds. Kylene Spiegel also had 9 points, 6 assists, and 4 steals.
Dragons come up just short against Gannon 56-47
The Dragons (0-3) played another close one against nationally-ranked Gannon, trailing by just three points at the half before a Dragons' 26 percent shooting clip in the second half gave the Golden Knights the 56-47 decision. Tiffin trailed at halftime 28-25, outshooting Gannon 44 percent to 37 percent but ran out of gas in the second half as GU rebounded to shoot 46 percent after halftime. Alexis Karel led TU with 10 points and 7 rebounds off the bench, while Leanne Lucius also had 9 points in the defensive battle.
Dragons drop close one to West Virginia Wesleyan 73-65
The Dragons (0-2) lost each half by four points in falling to West Virginia Wesleyan 73-65 at the Shippensburg tourney. The Dragons shot 41 percent for the game to WVW's 51 percent, while the Dragons struggled from three point land, hitting just 8 of 25 shots. Alexis Karel and Leanne Lucius had 13 points apiece to lead the way, with Lucius also grabbing 12 rebounds. Kylene Spiegel had 8 assists.
Dragons fall in second half to Shippensburg 89-71
The Dragons trailed 43-35 at halftime but couldn't keep up with a hot second half by Shippensburg, falling 89-71 in their season opener at the Shippensburg tourney. Shippensburg shot 54 percent in the second half and dominated the rebounding stats 42-24. The Dragons were led by Kylene Spiegel's 20 points, while Megan Fletcher had 15 points, Alexis Karel had 14 points, and Leanne Lucius had 10 points and 7 rebounds. Spiegel named Preseason All-Independent
Tiffin's Kylene Spiegel was named a Preseason All-Indepedent selection by the Independent Collegiate Athletic Association. She is a two-time All-ICAA honoree following both her freshman and sophomore seasons.
