Second half cold spell leads to narrow 62-51 loss to Findlay

Tiffin University (7-20) trailed just 38-33 at halftime against GLIAC-leading Findlay, but a 29 percent field goal percentage in the second half was too much to overcome, as TU eventually fell 62-51 in their season finale. Findlay shot 44 percent for the game and managed to control the paint, outscoring TU 36-16 in a game that witnessed 7 tie scores and 4 lead changes. Jennifer Johnston was the top scorer for TU with 15 points, while Mandy Jaeb had 11 points and Katrina Clark 10 points and 8 rebounds. Jordan Jenkins also grabbed 9 rebounds.

Late run costs Dragons in close 84-73 loss to Hillsdale

Tiffin University (7-19) held a 42-33 halftime lead and played close throughout the second half but a 14-3 run over the last 6:00 by Hillsdale gave them a 84-73 victory. The Dragons, playing without post player Jessica Harris due to injury, started the game with 5 guards and came out firing, but could manage just 33 percent in the second half from the field as Hillsdale took advantage inside for 65 percent shooting. Hillsdale outscored TU in the paint 44-22. Karli Mast led TU with 16 points while Mandy Jaeb had 14 points as did Stephanie Kelly with 14. Katrina Clark also had 7 points with 8 rebounds.

Turnovers, cold shooting sink Dragons 76-49 at Wayne State

Tiffin University (7-18) committed 19 turnovers to Wayne State's 5, leading to a 76-49 loss at Wayne State. Combined with just 33 percent field goal shooting, it was too much for the Dragons to overcome as they trailed 39-20 at halftime. While TU won the rebounding battle 46-34, they were outscored in the paint 40-22 as WSU hit 47 percent of their field goals. Mandy Jaeb was the only player in double figures, finishing with 24 points and 6 rebounds, while Jessica Harris had 9 points and 17 rebounds.

Dragons defense, Jaeb's 29 lead to 58-48 win over Timberwolves

Tiffin University (7-17) forced 20 Northwood turnovers, leading to 25 points scored off turnovers in a 58-48 victory. Despite Northwood holding a 39-33 advantage in field goal percentage for the game, the Dragons held a 7-2 three point advantage and jumped on the back of the GLIAC's leading scorer Mandy Jaeb. Jaeb had all of TU's free throws in the game, hitting 11 of 15 shots en route to 29 points in the game. Jessica Harris also had a big game with 10 points and 13 rebounds while Karli Mast also had 8 points and 6 rebounds. The Dragons defense tightened up over the final 4:00, as they did not allow a single point to Northwood over that span after the Timberwolves had pulled to within 4 points.

Huge comeback goes for naught in 82-78 loss to Cardinals

Tiffin University’s women’s basketball team trailed by 21 against the visiting Saginaw Valley State Cardinals and it looked like the second half might go the same way as the Dragons trailed by 24 early in the second half. But the Dragons put together an unbelievable comeback to take a one point lead with just 1:29 remaining. TU couldn’t hold on to the lead, however, dropping the contest 82-78.

The Cardinals hit a jumper with 17:18 remaining to give them a 24 point cushion 56-32.  TU would chip away at the lead over the next 15, getting it to within four with 2:10 to play. The Dragons then got a pair of free throws by Stephanie Kelly to cut it to a two point ball game. Kelly then made a steal and hit a three point shot off a Mandy Jaeb pass to give the Dragons their first lead of the game with 1:29 left to play.  TU couldn’t hang on though as they watched SVSU score the last five points of the game.

Jaeb turned in another strong performance for the Dragons, finishing with 30 points, five assists, and six rebounds. Jessica Harris nearly had a double-double, finishing with 8 points and 12 rebounds while Jennifer Johnston chipped in with 14 points.

The loss drops TU to 6-17 overall and 3-15 in the GLIAC. They host Northwood Thursday.

Late rally not enough as Dragons fall to Lakers 65-60

Tiffin University (6-16) got off to a poor start, falling behind by 16 points in the first half en route to a 65-60 loss to Lake Superior State. The Lakers held a 42-26 halftime edge, hitting 53 percent from the field while TU struggled all night, finishing with 36 percent field goal shooting. TU put together a late rally, outscoring the Lakers 15-7 over the final 2:23, but it was too little, too late. Jessica Harris had a strong night underneath, totaling 18 points with 16 rebounds, while Jennifer Johnston had 13 points, but no one else reached double figures.

Dragons poor start leads to 73-59 loss at Northern Michigan

Tiffin University (6-15) opened the game allowing a 20-3 run and eventually fell to Northern Michigan 73-59. The Dragons struggled again from the field, shooting just 33 percent for the game. NMU also hit 9 three pointers in the game to TU's 2. Katrina Clark led the team with 15 points while Stephanie Kelly had 13 and Jennifer Johnston had 11. Mandy Jaeb totaled 8 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists, while Jessica Harris also had 6 points with 12 rebounds.

Dragons struggle through 88-39 loss at Michigan Tech

Tiffin University (6-14) had one of their worst shooting nights of the season, hitting only 26 percent from the field in falling to Michigan Tech 88-39. The Huskies stayed hot from the floor, hitting 58 percent from the field while also crushing TU in rebounding 48-20. MTU held a 47-21 halftime lead and also hit 10 treys to TU's 4. Mandy Jaeb led TU scorers with 7 points.

Cold shooting sinks Dragons at Northwood 57-41

Tiffin University (6-13) never got on track from the field, shooting just 27 percent en route to a 57-41 loss at Northwood. Northwood jumped out early, posting a 50-26 percent field goal advantage in the first 20 minutes while also holding a 20-5 advantage for the game at the free throw line. The Dragons also lost the rebounding battle 41-32. Mandy Jaeb was the lone Dragons shooter in double figures with 13 points, while Jessica Harris had 6 points and 9 rebounds.

Free throws, rebounding lead TU to 76-61 win over Wayne State

Tiffin University (6-12) dominated the foul line and the rebounding totals, wearing down Wayne State 76-61. TU held an overwhelming 29-6 advantage at the charity stripe while also controlling the rebounds 44-28. The edge in those two categories made up for 22 turnovers by the Dragons, though TU committed only 5 turnovers after halftime. The Dragons held a narrow 33-30 lead at halftime but finetuned their game for a 43-31 edge after the break. Jessica Harris led TU with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Mandy Jaeb battled through a rough shooting night (3-for-14) to score 15 points (8 of 10 free throws) while also grabbing 4 rebounds and posting 6 steals. Karli Mast had 16 points (9 of 10 free throws).

First half struggles cost Dragons in 101-62 loss at Hillsdale

Tiffin University (5-12) shot just 32 percent in the first half at Hillsdale while the Chargers exploded for 62 percent shooting in dropping the Dragons 101-62. Hillsdale amassed a 56-25 halftime edge in putting the game away early. They held a 41-32 rebounding edge while also forcing TU into 22 turnovers. Hillsdale was most deadly from three point land, canning 15 treys on the day. Mandy Jaeb led the way with 23 points and 7 rebounds while Karli Mast had 14 and Jennifer Johnston 12. Jessica Harris led in rebounds with 10.

Jaeb's 26 not enough as Dragons drop another close one 74-69

Tiffin University (5-11) dropped their sixth contest by 9 points or less, falling 74-69 to the first place Findlay Oilers on the road. The Dragons hung tough the whole way, leading by 4 points with 3:20 to go, but the Oilers rallied for a 13-4 advantage over the final 3:20 to put the game away. Findlay also held a 18-9 free throw edge and outrebounded the Dragond 43-37. Mandy Jaeb increased her GLIAC-leading scoring average to 21.7 ppg with a 26 point effort with 5 rebounds and 4 assists, while Jennifer Johnston added 16 points with 4 rebounds. Jessica Harris had 10 rebounds and Stephanie Kelly had 8 points.

Dragons fall in narrow contest with Lakers 75-66

Tiffin University’s women went toe to toe with visiting Grand Valley State University before eventually falling 75-66, but the Dragons had a much better showing against the Lakers than the 86-59 contest they lost at GVSU on December 3rd.

When Mandy Jaeb grabbed a defensive rebound and went coast to coast for a bucket with 4 minutes left to play in the first half to tie the game at 27, the Lakers knew that the game was going to be a lot different than the first meeting. However, the Lakers finished the final four minutes on a 5-1 scoring run, a run that would put the Lakers up for good. The Dragons made many runs in the second half, but could never tie the game up again.

The Dragons fell behind by 12 early in the second half, but kept scoring to keep the game within reach. After cutting the lead to eight, Jessica Harris canned a jumper and freshman Karli Mast hit a three to pull the Dragons within three. TU and GVSU traded baskets over the next four minutes until GVSU took a six point lead with 7:31 remaining. Harris then hit another jumper before nailing two free throws to pull the Dragons to within two with 6:03 showing.

That’s the closest the Dragons would come to tying the game as the Lakers, who are tied for first in the GLIAC North Division, buried some big shots to keep it a two possession game the rest if the way.

Jaeb capped off a great week with her lowest point total in three games, 25, to lead the Dragons in scoring. The sophomore guard also grabbed seven rebounds, dished out five assists, and added a blocked shot while committing only one turnover in 38 minutes of play.  Harris added a double-double scoring 15 points while hauling in 12 boards. Mast also reached double figures, scoring 13 points while handing out three assists. Jordan Jenkins (six), Melissa Gilliland (four), and Jennifer Johnston (three) accounted for the rest of the Dragons' scoring.

The Dragons are now 5-10 overall and 2-8 in the GLIAC. They will travel to Findlay, who leads the GLIAC South, on Thursday.

Jaeb's 28 points go for naught as Dragons fall 75-66

Tiffin University (5-9, 2-7 GLIAC) got another stellar performance from Mandy Jaeb, as she racked up 28 points with 5 steals and 4 rebounds, but 28 percent field goal shooting by the Dragons in the second half led to a narrow 75-66 defeat to Ferris State.

The Bulldogs held a narrow 41-39 halftime edge, as the game saw numerous lead changes throughout the game. The Bulldogs hit numerous free throws down the stretch to outdistance the Dragons, ultimately holding a 19-5 free throw advantage. The Dragons hit 11 three pointers to Ferris State's 4 to keep the game close.

Stephanie Kelly also had 16 points, as she and Jaeb combined for 44 of the team's 66 points.

Jaeb explodes for 35 in 70-63 win over Cardinals

Tiffin University (5-8, 2-6 GLIAC) got a season-best performance from the GLIAC's leading scorer, Mandy Jaeb, in a 70-63 win at Saginaw Valley State. Jaeb scored 35 points in the victory, draining 10 free throws in as many attempts while also picking up 4 assists.

The Dragons trailed after a close first half 30-29 but came out hot to start the second half, pulling out to a 10 point lead. But the Cardinals battled back and took a three point lead with 3:55 to play. The Dragons rallied to close the game, finishing on a 12-2 run over the final 4:00 for the victory.

While the Cardinals outrebounded TU 51-35 and outshot them 39-33 percent, it was the Dragons defense that garnered the win, as they forced 23 SVSU turnovers while committing only 12. They also held a 19-12 advantage at the free throw line.

Second half collapse dooms Dragons 89-63

Tiffin University (4-8, 1-6 GLIAC) played a close first half but could not keep pace in the second half, falling 89-63 to Michigan Tech. The Dragons shot 60 percent in the first half and kept pace with the Huskies until a brief streak by MTU put them up 45-37 at the half. But the Dragons fell off to a 31 percent shooting percentage in the second half while the Huskies stayed hot at 63 percent, outscoring TU 44-26 in the half.

TU had 13 turnovers in the game while MTU only committed 7 turnovers. Karli Mast led TU with 15 points while Mandy Jaeb had 13 and Jennifer Johnston 10. Jordan Jenkins added 8 points while Stephanie Kelly had 7 points and Jessica Harris had 6 points with 6 rebounds.

Shooting woes sink Dragons against Wildcats

Tiffin University’s women couldn’t shake off a cold shooting night as they fell to Northern Michigan 44-36 at home.  The Dragons, who shot 24 percent for the game, actually shot better than the Wildcats but couldn’t find a way to knock off Northern Michigan who is tied for first in the North division.

Jessica Harris led the Dragons with a double-double. She had 10 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Mandy Jaeb also had 10 points to go along with her three assists. Katrina Clark added eight points and three rebounds.

The Dragons and Wildcats both committed 12 turnovers, but the Wildcats got to the free throw line and connected (14-20) more than TU (7-10).

The Dragons (4-7, 1-5) are back in action Saturday when they host Michigan Tech who is also tied for first in the GLIAC North division.

Cold second half drops Dragons 76-64 at Ashland

Tiffin led 40-34 at the half but an ice cold second half led to a 76-64 defeat at Ashland. The Dragons shot just 20 percent from the field after firing 53 percent in the first half. The cold spell led to a huge swing that saw the Dragons leading by 8 points in the first half but eventually traililng by 16 points in the second half.

Ashland outscored TU in the paint 36-14 and took advantage of 19 TU turnovers leading to a 22-7 edge in points off turnovers. Mandy Jaeb had 19 points and Jessica Harris had 10 points with 14 rebounds, but no one else reached double figures. Karli Mast had 9 points and Jennifer Johnston had 8 points.

Dragons hang tough in 87-82 win over Lake Erie

The first and second halves of the Tiffin University- Lake Erie College women’s basketball game had the same theme. In each half, the Dragons raced out to a huge lead, watched it evaporate into a deficit, but would be able to prevail in the end to take an 87-82 victory.  Monster games from Mandy Jaeb, Karli Mast, and Jessica Harris ultimately carried the Dragons to the win.

Harris, a freshman, had a double-double by halftime. She ended the night with 15 points while hauling in 17 rebounds and also dishing out four assists. Mast, also a freshman, scored 21 points while dishing out six assists while sophomore Jaeb led all players in scoring with 29 points while grabbing seven rebounds and adding five assists.  The win comes as a non conference victory, but was a big statement for the Dragons to send to Lake Erie College as the Strom will be a member of the GLIAC next season.

“We talked about the fact they are coming into the conference next year, and we want to send a message now that Tiffin’s not a team that’s going to come in and roll over,” said Dragons’ coach Pam Oswald.

The Dragons started the game with an 8-0 run after Jennifer Johnston hit a three off a Harris pass and a Jaeb three pointer off another Harris pass.  Mast then hit a jumper to give the Dragons an eight point cushion with 18:24 left in the first half. The Dragons pushed the lead up to 11 at the 12:50 mark when Jessica Harris hit a jumper off a Mast pass. The Dragons would not be able to hold that lead for long, however, as the Storm kept chipping away at the lead and finally tied the game at 25 with 5:44 remaining.

The Dragons would take leads again, but the Storm tied the game with 1:27 remaining and took their first lead after a three point goal gave them a 39-36 advantage with 1:01 remaining. The Dragons would score the final four points in the first half to take a one point lead into the break. Harris and Jaeb each had two made foul shots to give the Dragons the one point lead.

TU started the second half on an 8-0 run as well. Harris found Jonette McQueen for a jumper and then Mast assisted Jaeb on a three point goal before Johnston hit another triple off a Mast pass. The Dragons would be able to build the lead to 13 when Jordan Jenkins hit a jumper but saw the Storm go on a 13-0 run to tie the game at the 8:39 mark. The Dragons again fell behind by three at the 7:31 mark after a Storm three pointer, but the Dragons tied the game 21 seconds later when Jaeb nailed a three. The Storm came back down the court and hit two free throws after a Dragons foul on McQueen but a Harris jumper followed by two free throws by Jaeb after a defensive stop at 4:59 would give the Dragons the lead for good.

The Dragons used great free throw shooting down the stretch to ice the game. They finished the game 23-26 from the line. Jaeb was a perfect 8-8, while Harris was 7-8, and Mast finished 6-7. Johnston was 2-3 from the stripe.

TU also shot well from three point range. The Dragons finished 10-18 from behind the arc, riding Jaeb’s 5-9 and Johnston’s 2-4. Mast (1-3) and Jordan Jenkins (1-2) also contributed.

The win improves the Dragons to 4-5 overall while dropping Lake Erie to 8-8. The Dragons resume GLIAC play Saturday as they travel to Ashland.

Dragons drop game of inches at Lake Superior 67-64

The Dragons (3-5, 1-3 GLIAC) battled back and forth with Lake Superior State all day but could not pull ahead at the end, missing a three point shot at the buzzer in falling 67-64.

The Dragons held an 8-point lead in the first half, but were outscored 23-10 over the final 10 minutes of the half to trail at the half 35-30. But Tiffin bounced back quickly after the halftime break and played a back and forth affair the rest of the way.

The biggest difference came at the free throw line, where LSSU held a 23-10 advantage. The shooting percentages, rebounding, and turnovers were nearly identical. Mandy Jaeb led the Dragons with 21 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Karli Mast had 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Jessica Harris also had 9 points and 12 rebounds.

Ashland maintains early lead, beats TU 65-53

To say Tiffin University’s women’s basketball team got off to a bad start against Ashland would be an understatement. The Dragons would put together some runs during the game, but could never pull themselves out of an early 13 point hole, falling to Ashland 65-53.

After the tipoff, TU fell behind 13-0 with 15:51 remaining in the first half in a stretch that saw the Dragons turn the ball over five times to go along with a 0-3 shooting start from the field. The Dragons got on the scoreboard with 15:24 remaining when Jessica Harris scored off a Melissa Gilliland pass.

The Dragons still trailed by 13 with 1:42 in the half but a 6-0 run over the remaining time cut the Eagles lead to 7 at the break. Trailing 32-19 Karli Mast made a three on an assist from Stephanie Kelly. Mandy Jaeb then made a layup, drawing a foul in the process. After she made the free throw the Dragons trailed 32-25 at the break.

However, the Dragons could not keep the momentum as they came out for the second half. Ashland and TU traded buckets to start the half, but a 13-5 run over the next eight minutes would put the Dragons behind 47-32.

TU didn’t quit though. Trailing by 12 with 6:38 to play, Jordan Jenkins hit a three pointer to cut the lead to 9. Mast then turned a steal into two free throws to bring the Dragons to within 7 before an Ashland bucket that took the Eagles lead back to nine. But the Dragons went on a 5-0 run when Kelly hit a three pointer and Katrina Clark hit a jumper to make it 54-50 Ashland with 5:04 remaining.

The next possession would prove to be the knockout blow Ashland was looking for. After the Dragons forced Elizabeth Tyler to miss a quick three, Tyler got her own rebound and made a layup. The Dragons did get the lead back down to five with 1:42 left to play, but Ashland scored the last seven points to seal the 65-53 win.

Jaeb scored a team high 21 points on her way to being the only Dragon to reach double figures.  Mast added nine points and three assists while Jessica Harris led the Dragons with nine rebounds along with scoring six points.

The Dragons forced the Eagles into 21 turnovers while only committing 16, but the Eagles owned a 43-30 advantage on the glass.

The loss drops TU to 3-4 (1-2 GLIAC) while improving Ashland to 3-3 (1-2). The Dragons will travel to Lake Superior State next Saturday in another GLIAC game.

9th-ranked Gannon streaks past Dragons 86-59

The Dragons shot 44 percent in the second half, outscoring the Bulldogs 44-33 in the half. The biggest advantage for the Dragons was at the free throw line, where TU drilled 24 of 29 shots and held a 24-7 edge over FSU at the line. Tiffin also took care of the ball, committing only 9 turnovers while forcing 21 miscues by the Bulldogs.

Mandy Jaeb once again led the Dragons with a solid overall game, totaling 22 points with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Jaeb was joined in a balanced attack by Katrina Clark inside for 14 points and 5 rebounds, while Jessica Harris also played well with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Dragons fall to Lakers in GLIAC opener 86-59

Tiffin University (2-2) couldn't keep up shooting from the field, falling behind 24-8 to open the game and eventually losing at Grand Valley State 86-59.

TU trailed by 16 points after the first 10 minutes of play, with rebounding playing a key factor as the Lakers outrebounded TU 24-13 in the first half. TU put together a run near the end of the half that pulled TU to within 42-31 at the half.

The Lakers came out on fire to start the second half, putting together a 16-7 run at the start of the half to pull away for good. TU could not cool off the Lakers shooters, who shot a blistering 70 percent after halftime to outscore TU 44-28 over the final 20 minutes.

Mandy Jaeb led TU with 20 points while Katrina Clark had 12 points and 5 rebounds. Karli Mast also had 8 points. TU was outrebounded 44-21 and outshot 54 percent to 38 percent.
