Dragons honor players at annual banquet
The
Senior Kylene Spiegel earned
the Heart and Hustle award based on her efforts on both ends of the court
everyday in practice and games . Freshman
Mandy Jaeb was named Newcomer of the
Year, while sophomore Holly Focke
earned the Charge Award.
Lucius was recognized
for her efforts on the court, in the classroom and in the community. An All-GLIAC Second Team selection in the
Dragons first year in the GLIAC, Lucius
led the team in scoring (12.5 ppg) rebounding (6.9 rpg) and 3-point FG% (.397). Lucius also earned a spot on the
Academic All-GLIAC Team and a CoSIDA Academic First Team All-District honoree,
carrying a 4.00 cumulative grade point average.
Spiegel was recognized
for her spirit and passion that she
brought to the court each day as a point guard and a leader of the team. Spiegel’s
support of teammates, positive attitude and effort on the practice court
represented the mission of
Focke turned her
game up a notch this season by stepping in and taking sixteen charges over the
course of the season.

Dragons lose late in season finale 64-61
Tiffin University (7-20, 6-16 GLIAC) saw their season come to a close in tough fashion, as the Dragons could not hold a 11 point second half lead and fell in the closing minute to Findlay 64-61 in their season finale. TU could muster just 36 percent field goal shooting in the game while Findlay turned it around to hit at a 50 percent clip in the second half. TU held a 32-27 halftime lead and expanded on it early in the second half, but only three players carried the scoring. Mandy Jaeb finished with a team-high 22 points, while Leanne Lucius finished her career in style with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Holly Focke also played well with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Kylene Spiegel and Megan Fletcher, who joined Lucius earlier this year in scoring 1000 career points, also finished their careers.Dragons fall at buzzer to 8th-ranked Hillsdale 76-74
Tiffin University (7-19, 6-15 GLIAC) battled back from a double digit deficit in the second half and led by 3 points with 8 seconds to go, but 8th-ranked Hillsdale scored 5 points in the closing seconds to steal the win from TU 76-74. The Chargers hit a three pointer with 2 seconds remaining to tie the game and after TU turned the ball over, they converted another bucket just under the buzzer for the win. Leanne Lucius led TU with 22 points and 9 rebounds while Megan Fletcher had 10 points and 9 rebounds.Poor shooting costs Dragons in Senior Day loss 76-58
Tiffin University (7-18, 6-14 GLIAC) shot just 10 percent from three point and 40 percent overall while Wayne State hit at a 49 percent clip and hit 5 more threes as they avenged a loss earlier this season and beat TU on Senior Day 76-58. Leanne Lucius led TU with 17 points and 6 rebounds while Megan Fletcher had 15 points and Holly Focke had 10 points and 7 rebounds.
Dragons play tough but fall to Northwood 62-54
Tiffin University (7-17, 6-13 GLIAC) trailed by 12 in the second half but came back to with 2 points with 30 seconds to play before eventually falling 62-54. The Timberwolves hit 16 of 18 free throws down the stretch to ice the game. TU trailed 33-24 at the half but turned up the defense in the second half, holding Northwood to just 26 percent from the field to mount the comeback. Kylene Spiegel led the Dragons with 14 points while Leanne Lucius had 12 and Mandy Jaeb added 10 points. Holly Focke was the top rebounder with 10 rebounds.
Dragons strong rebounding leads to win over Cardinals 73-55
Tiffin University (7-16, 6-12 GLIAC) dominated the rebounding 48-33, leading to a solid 73-55 win at Saginaw Valley State. TU held a 38-26 lead at the half and held SVSU to just 33 percent field goal shooting. Megan Fletcher led four players in double figures with 14 points and 8 rebounds, while Holly Focke had a big game with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Kylene Spiegel had 13 points, Mandy Jaeb added 10 points, and Leanne Lucius had 9 points and 8 rebounds.Dragons stay strong in second half, win 77-65
Tiffin University (6-16, 5-12 GLIAC) held a narrow lead at the half but maintained their intensity and outscored Lake Superior State 41-32 in the second half, eventually winning 77-65. Most of the stats were even but the Dragons had 10 three pointers to give them the advantage. Kylene Spiegel led the way with 23 points while Megan Fletcher had 13 points and Holly Focke had 9 points and 7 rebounds.Dragons can't hold lead, fall to Wildcats 76-70
Tiffin University (5-16, 4-12 GLIAC) had a 12 point lead early in the second half after a solid first half, but could not hold on as a cold shooting spell led to a 76-70 loss to Northern Michigan. TU shot just 39 percent in the game to NMU's 54 percent and were outrebounded 39-30. TU put four players in double figures, with Mandy Jaeb leading the pack with 15 points. Leanne Lucius had 12 points and 6 rebounds, while Megan Fletcher had 11 and Holly Focke and Kylene Spiegel had 10 each.
Dragons comeback falls short 72-63 against Huskies
Tiffin University (5-15, 4-11 GLIAC) trailed 40-20 at halftime due to redhot three point shooting from Michigan Tech, but nearly pulled off a comeback, pulling to within 7 points with 1:00 to play before falling 72-63. The Dragons were led by Mandy Jaeb's 17 points while Megan Fletcher added 12 points. Alexis Karel also had 10 rebounds. MTU shot 10 for 13 from three points, and overall shot 55 percent in the game.
Lucius named First Team CoSIDA All-District Academic
Tiffin University's Leanne Lucius was named a First Team All-District 4 Academic selection, one of four other GLIAC women's basketball players making the First Team. Lucius posted a 4.00 GPA in Marketing. Lucius tied Ferris State's Caitlin Hutchison with the highest GPA on the squad. Dragons fall after tough first half 62-52
Tiffin University (5-14, 4-10 GLIAC) shot just 23 percent in the first half, falling behind 25-16 at the half and eventually falling 62-52 at Northwood. The Dragons managed to shoot just 32 percent in the game while also committing 19 turnovers. Mandy Jaeb was the lone player in double figures, scoring 21 points, while Megan Fletcher had 9 points and 6 rebounds. Kylene Spiegel had 8 points and Leanne Lucius led the team with 8 rebounds.Dragons break losing streak with win over Wayne State 74-64
Tiffin University (5-13, 4-9 GLIAC) ended a seven-game losing streak with a solid 74-64 win at Wayne State. The Dragons played a strong second half, outscoring the Warriors 52-41 in the final 20 minutes to get the win. The Dragons had a big advantage at the free throw line, hitting 26 of 35 free throws while also shooting well from three point (8-for-20). Leanne Lucius led the way with 21 points and 9 rebounds while Megan Fletcher also had a good second half to finish with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Holly Focke gave the Dragons another good offensive weapon with 18 points, and Kylene Spiegel had 9 points and 5 assists. TU controlled the rebounds 38-30.Dragons continue active community service
Tiffin University's women's basketball team has continued to help the Seneca County community with a variety of projects over recent months. Throughout the year, the Dragons have visited the Elmwood Assisted Living residence in Tiffin, helping the elderly with a variety of tasks. They socialize with the senior citizens both as a team and individually on their own time. In October, the Dragons continued the Adopt-A-Highway program, cleaning up trash from State Route 224 over a one-mile stretch. They team has also helped with a number of clinics. In October, a free clinic was hosted for area elementary children at Washington Elementary School in Tiffin. Approximately 40 students between 1st and 5th grades were instructed on defense, passing, and shooting skills. Most recently in December the team held a free clinic for Boy Scouts in the Gillmor Center, teaching a variety of basketball skills. The team plans to continue its community involvement in the future.Dragons fall to Hillsdale in close game 75-61
Tiffin University (4-13, 3-9 GLIAC) hung with Hillsdale for most of the contest, pulling to within 4 points with 4:30 to play before eventually falling 75-61. Hillsdale controlled the rebounds 45-27, with Katie Cezat hauling down 26 rebounds herself along with 35 points. Holly Focke led TU with 14 points and 6 rebounds but was the lone Dragons player in double figures. Hillsdale also had an 18-4 advantage at the free throw line.
Dragons drop close one to Oilers 72-63
Tiffin University (4-12, 3-8 GLIAC) held a 33-30 halftime lead but were outplayed in the second half 42-30, leading to a 72-63 loss to Findlay. The Dragons were demolished at the free throw line, where the Oilers had 31 more free throw attempts than TU and held a 22-4 edge. TU also had 16 turnovers to Findlay's 7. Kylene Spiegel led the Dragons with 17 points while Alexis Karel had 14 points and 8 rebounds. Leanne Lucius also had 10 points with 10 rebounds and Megan Fletcher had 11 points. Spiegel's 17 points leave her one point short of 1000 for her career.
Dragons fall to Grand Valley State 78-54
Tiffin University (4-11, 3-7 GLIAC) were within range of the Lakers at the half, trailing just 35-26, but never got on track shooting from the field, firing at just 35 percent for the game en route to a 78-54 loss at Grand Valley State. The game fell apart quickly after halftime, as the Lakers shot a red hot 57 percent from the floor and outscored TU 43-28 over the final 20 minutes. Leanne Lucius led TU with 14 points and 8 rebounds while Mandy Jaeb was also in double figures with 12 points. Holly Focke added 8 points and 6 rebounds. Grand Valley State also held a 17-5 advantage in free throws.Dragons lose in closing seconds in rematch with Ferris State 83-82
Tiffin University (4-10, 3-6 GLIAC) held a 4 point lead with 41 seconds to play, but Ferris State canned a three pointer and the game-winning shot with 8 seconds to play to win a rematch with TU 83-82. The Dragons had possession for a final shot but turned the ball over with 2 seconds to play. Megan Fletcher had a big night, scoring 29 points with 6 steals, while Leanne Lucius had 18 points and 6 rebounds and Kylene Spiegel had 17 points and 7 assists. Mandy Jaeb was also in double figures with 11 points. The Bulldogs held a 17-4 free throw advantage, while they also shot a blistering 65 percent in the second half. Tiffin University (4-9, 3-5 GLIAC) played a close first half before Michigan Tech put together a 15-4 run over the final 3:00 of the half, taking a 38-28 halftime lead en route to a 83-59 victory. MTU held a 19-6 free throw advantage, as TU was called for 22 fouls to Michigan Tech's 10. MTU also held the rebounding edge 34-26. Alexis Karel led TU with 16 points and 5 rebounds, while Leanne Lucius had 14 points and Mandy Jaeb had 13 points. Tiffin University (4-8, 3-4 GLIAC) led 33-25 at halftime and looked to be in control, but a complete reversal after the break sent the Dragons to a 69-60 loss at Northern Michigan. NMU outscored TU 44-27 in the second half, as the Dragons went cold from the field, shooting 32 percent in the second half. Katrina Clark led the Dragons with 14 points in the paint, while Alexis Karel added 10 points. Mandy Jaeb also had 10 points.Dragons can't pull off stunning comeback, fall 73-67
Tiffin University (4-7, 3-3 GLIAC) trailed by 20 points at the half but came out on fire in the second half, tying the game with just over 5:00 to play. The Dragons could not pull of the comeback though, falling just short 73-67. TU played poorly in the first half, trailing 43-23 while shooting 33 percent to Ashland's 60 percent. But the Dragons came alive, hitting three pointers and forcing turnovers to climb back into it. Megan Fletcher led the team with 17 points and 7 rebounds, while Kylene Spiegel had 14 points, Mandy Jaeb had a strong second half with 13 points, and Leanne Lucius had 10 points. Holly Focke added 11 rebounds. Four Dragons finished in double figures in scoring, with Megan Fletcher totaling 18 points with 5 rebounds, while Mandy Jaeb had 13, Leanne Lucius had 11 with 6 rebounds, and Kylene Spiegel had 10 with 5 assists. Tiffin University (2-6, 1-2 GLIAC) battled back from double digit deficits throughout the night, climbing to within three points on a number of occasions, but could not take the lead as Ashland beat TU on the road 73-58. TU trailed 30-24 at the half and continued to comeback throughout the game, but a 22-9 free throw advantage by the Eagles was just one of a number of stats that gave Ashland an edge. TU shot just 35 percent from the field while the Eagles also held a 46-28 rebounding advantage. Dragons turn up the offense in 85-68 win over Bulldogs
Tiffin University (2-5, 1-1 GLIAC) started cold from the floor but turned it up midway through the first half and never looked back, firing 54 percent in the second half en route to a 85-68 win over Ferris State. TU's defense also played well, forcing 24 Bulldogs turnovers. Megan Fletcher was outstanding, scoring 31 points with 9 rebounds and 8 steals, while Leanne Lucius had 18 points and 6 rebounds. Mandy Jaeb added 13 points, while Kylene Spiegel had 9 points and 6 assists. TU shot 10 for 20 from three point and hit 23 of 29 free throws.Lakers outshoot Dragons for 66-55 win

Megan Fletcher was the sole player in double figures for TU, scoring 25 points. Leanne Lucius led the team with 8 rebounds. Tiffin University (1-4) held a 29-26 halftime lead but could not execute their offense consistently enough in the second half, as Gannon won 67-59. The Dragons shot just 37 percent in the game while Gannon managed 41 percent and hit their free throws down the stretch, connecting on 15 of 20 overall. Gannon also outrebounded TU 39-32. Megan Fletcher scored 13 points to lead TU while Fallon Sanborn had 12 points. Mandy Jaeb finished with 9, as did Kylene Spiegel. Tiffin University (1-3) led 30-20 at the half against unbeaten Indianapolis but the Greyhounds came out on fire in the second half and just edged TU 68-62, hitting key free throws in the closing seconds to put the game away. The Greyhounds shot 74 percent from the floor in the second half. Leanne Lucius led the Dragons with 14 points and 6 rebounds, while Kylene Spiegel had 9 points and Holly Focke 8 points.Dragons poor shooting leads to 76-57 loss at Slippery Rock
Tiffin University (1-2) shot just 32 percent in the game, including a 22 percent mark in the second half as Slippery Rock got their first win of the season 76-57 over TU. TU opened flat and fell behind early before bouncing back for a run that brought them to within two points. The Dragons trailed at the half 43-38, but poor shooting after the break led to a rough second half. The Dragons shot 6 for 29 from three point land. Alexis Karel led the Dragons with 11 points, while Jennifer Johnston had 10 points off the bench. Leanne Lucius had 8 points with 13 rebounds, and Mandy Jaeb added 9 points.Dragons fall in closing seconds to Wheeling Jesuit 69-66
Tiffin University (1-1) controlled the game for the first 30 minutes but inconsistent play over the final 10 minutes led to a narrow 69-66 loss to Wheeling Jesuit. Tiffin led at the half 36-31 and opened the game with an 11-0 run. But WJU kept the game close and battled back from a 10-point second half deficit to eventually take the lead by as much as 6 points with 4:00 to play. Tiffin battled back as the two teams traded leads in the final minute of play, but Tiffin could not manage to get off a potential game-tying three point shot in the final 10 seconds. Leanne Lucius played another solid game, scoring 17 points with 12 rebounds. Alexis Karel had 16 points and 7 rebounds, while Holly Focke also had 13 points and 6 rebounds. Fallon Sanborn also reached double digits with 10 points.
Dragons win opener 69-65 over West Liberty
Tiffin University (1-0) played a strong press defense leading to a close 69-65 win at the Wheeling Jesuit tourney over West Liberty State. Leanne Lucius led the Dragons with 15 points and 13 rebounds while Mandy Jaeb played well off the bench with 14 points. Kylene Spiegel, Fallon Sanborn, Megan Fletcher, and Holly Focke played aggressive press defense throughout the contest, leading to numerous transition opportunities. Dragons name honorees at annual banquet
Tiffin University honored the standouts on the team for the 2007-08 season at their annual banquet on April 13. There were two awards given out that were statistic-based: Charge Award - Fallon Sanborn with 14 charges on the year & Best Rebounder Award - Leanne Lucius with 8 rpg/221 on the season. There were three awards that were voted on by the players: Newcomer of the Year Award - Megan Fletcher, Heart & Hustle Award - Fallon Sanborn and Dragon Award (a person of character & integrity on and off the court) Leanne Lucius.
