Dragons lose in penalty kicks after double overtime thriller with Quincy
Tiffin University (13-5-2) saw its memorable season come to an end in dramatic fashion, as TU and Quincy battled to a 1-1 tie after two overtimes in the first round of the NCAA National Tournament at Grand Valley State University. Quincy won the penalty kick shootout 4-3. With the penalty kicks tied at 3-3, Tiffin's fifth shot was stopped by Quincy's goalkeeper. Quincy made its fifth shot to end the Dragons season. The Dragons had led 1-0 at the half, as Deidre Abouahmed scored in the 44th minute on an 18 yard shot into the upper left corner of the net. But Quincy answered in the 57th minute when Becky Fleming scored. Quincy controlled the tempo throughout most of the game's 110 minutes, outshooting the Dragons 22-7. Tiffin University's Kirsten White was a Daktronics Second Team All-Midwest Region pick by vote of the College Sports Information Directors of America. White, a junior defender, helped lead the Dragons to a 13-5-1 mark and a first-ever NCAA National Tournament selection in 2008. Tiffin University's women's soccer team (13-5-1) became the first Tiffin University team to earn admission to the NCAA National Tournament with the announcement of the qualifying teams in the Midwest Region being played at Grand Valley State University starting Friday. The Dragons will face Quincy University (11-6-1) at 1 pm at Grand Valley State, with the Lakers awaiting the outcome for the second round game on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 1 pm. The Dragons have never faced Quincy in their 17 year history. Quincy will enter as the 4th seed while TU will be seeded 5th. Dragons fall in GLIAC Semifinals 2-1 to Cardinals
Tiffin University (13-5-1, 9-4-1 GLIAC) continued to find no success against Saginaw Valley State, as the Dragons lost for the third time this season to the Cardinals, this time 2-1 in the GLIAC Semifinals at Grand Valley State. The Dragons got on the board with their first shot of the game at the 2:00 mark, as GLIAC Freshman of the Year Shelly Rogers scored off a pass from Renee Cain. TU led at the half 1-0 and had outshot SVSU at that point 9-3. But the second half was a different story, as the Cardinals scored both goals in rapid succession in the 50th and 51st minutes. The first goal was an own goal, while the gamewinner came from Jacylyn Barrett. Abby Grieser played in goal, making 4 saves. Tiffin University (13-4-1, 9-4-1 GLIAC) got a goal from Renee Cain in the 13th minute and then held on for a narrow 1-0 win at Findlay in their regular season finale. Cain scored off a corner from Kirsten White and then let the defense take over. Abby Grieser played 90 minutes in goal for the shutout, making 4 saves. Tiffin University (12-4-1, 8-4-1 GLIAC) tallied a goal in the 81st minute, forcing overtime before settling for a 1-1 double overtime tie with Northern Michigan. Meghan Sarna put NMU ahead in the 49th minute off a free kick and the Wildcats held on throughout the second half. But TU finally got a goal in the 81st minute when Kirsten White headed home a corner kick from Shelly Rogers to tie the score at 1-1. A strong wind kept the two teams pinned on half the field throughout the game and the overtime periods, limiting some offensive chances for both teams. Tiffin University (12-4, 8-4 GLIAC) picked up two goals from Deidre Abouahmed en route to posting a 3-0 win at Ashland. TU took a 2-0 lead at the half, opening with Abouahmed's goal in the 13th minute off a cross from Shelly Rogers. Rogers then made it 2-0 in the 32nd minute off a shot off the bottom of the crossbar after a pass from Jillian McGonigal. TU got their last goal in the 50th minute, as Abouahmed took a pass from Steffany Stoeffler and put it past the keeper. Abby Grieser played 90 minutes in goal for the shutout, making 2 saves. Tiffin University (11-4, 7-4 GLIAC) ran into a buzzsaw Sunday at Grand Valley State, as the Lakers won 7-0. The Lakers outshot TU 24-4 in the contest, getting goals in the 23rd and 28th minutes to take a 2-0 halftime lead. The floodgates really opened starting in the 49th minute, as the Lakers proceeded to score 5 goals in a 15 minute span. Tiffin University (11-3, 7-3 GLIAC) put on the Renee Cain and Jillian McGonigal Show offensively, as Cain scored both goals in a narrow 2-1 road victory against GLIAC foe Ferris State. McGonigal assisted both goals, including the gamewinner in the 85th minute. Cain opened scoring in the 28th minute, hitting a shot from the left side to give TU a 1-0 halftime edge. Ferris State equalized in the 76th minute off a header from Maegan Smith, but Cain gave TU the win, burying a shot from the right side after a through ball from McGonigal. Tiffin University (10-3, 6-3 GLIAC) outshot Northwood 20-5 en route to a solid 6-0 shutout in GLIAC action. The Dragons opened scoring in the 2nd minute as Jillian McGonigal drilled home a free kick from Deidre Abouahmed after a header flick from Shelly Rogers to get out of the gates quickly. Renee Cain made it 2-0 at the half, burying a header off another Abouahmed free kick in the 18th minute. In the second half, the Dragons continued the attack, with Lauren Wilhelm taking a Cain pass and scoring in the 51st minute. Shelly Rogers scored the first of her two goals in the 63rd minute on a pass from Sheri Camloh, and then drilled home a shot that bounced off the crossbar in the 67th minute for an unassisted goal. Courtney Adams finished off the scoring, taking a Rogers pass as soon as she had checked into the game in the 74th minute and scoring. Saginaw Valley State scored the winning goal on a shot by Kim Oberski in the 51st minute off a pass from Stephanie Ray. TU mustered just 1 shot in the opening half. They outshot the Cardinals in the second half 9-6 with 5 shots on goal but couldn't capitalize on any of them. Cain waited four more minutes before taking a pass from Shelly Rogers and scoring in the 27th minute. The Dragons continued the attack, with Cain assisting on Hannah Stevens goal in the 30th minute to give TU a 3-1 halftime edge. Ashland scored a goal in the 80th minute and pressed to try to tie over the final 10 minutes, but could not manage a serious shot. Tiffin University (7-2, 3-2 GLIAC) allowed a goal in the 87th minute against top-ranked Grand Valley State, falling in a hard-fought battle on a beautiful day at Paradiso Fields 1-0. Katy Tafler scored the gamewinner for the Lakers on a pass from Kristen Eible, sending a rocket into the left corner of the net from 15 yards out. Abouahmed put the Dragons on the board early, putting in a rebound goal off a pass from Shelly Rogers in the 5th minute. Camloh put the shot past the keeper off a loose ball from four yards out, with the assist going to Lauren Turkington. TU had trailed 1-0 after Northwood scored in the 36th minute, but the Dragons equalized less than a minute later when Shelly Rogers knocked home a header off a pass from Renee Cain. Dragons hold on for 2-1 win over Findlay
Tiffin University (5-0, 1-0 GLIAC) picked up their first conference win of 2008, beating Findlay in a close game 2-1. The Dragons got two first half goals from Vickie Galaska in the 11th minute off a penalty kick and from Shelly Rogers in the 23rd minute off a free kick to take a 2-0 halftime advantage. But after switching ends, and with a strong wind putting the Dragons on their heels, the Oilers went on the attack, bombarding goalkeeper Abby Grieser and the Dragons defense. Findlay's Brianna Milne made it 2-1 in the 64th minute off a rebound, but Grieser (6 saves over 90 minutes) and the defense held on good enough over the final 26 minutes for the win. The Dragons (4-0) were outshot in the contest 14-7 but made the most of their opportunities to pull out the win. Tiffin University tied with Northern Michigan with 30 points each as they were voted third in the 2008 GLIAC Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll. Grand Valley State was first with 49 points, including 7 first place nods, while Saginaw Valley State was second with 37 points. Findlay just missed a third place tie with 29 points in taking the fifth spot, while Ashland was sixth with 22 points. Ferris State (19 points for 7th place) and Northwood (7 points for 8th place) rounded out the field. Dragons name 2008 team captains
Tiffin University Head Coach Rudy Brownell has named his 2008 women's soccer team captains. Vickie Galaska, Felicia Ruiz, Ciara Gossett, and Steffany Stoeffler will serve as captains in the fall as the Dragons enter the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.Dragons earn more academic honors
Tiffin's Vickie Galaska and Steffany Stoeffler both earned Second Team All-Ohio Academic honors from the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association for the 2007 season. The honor recognized athletes from NCAA Division II and the NAIA.Dragons Soccer earns top academic honor
Tiffin's men's and women's soccer teams both earned NSCAA Team Academic Awards for the 2007 year. A total of 414 soccer teams met the minimum requirement of a 3.00 team GPA, but only 74 schools received men's and women's recognition.
Grieser, Brownell take top honors in ICAA
Tiffin's Abby Grieser was named Co-Player of the Year with Flagler's Annika Hogberg as the All-Independent teams were announced. Rudy Brownell was also named Co-Coach of the Year along with Flagler's Teddy Meyer, as he helped lead the team to an 11-6-1 finish to win the ICAA Championship. Also landing First Team selections were Felicia Ruiz, Renee Cain, and Emily Goldsberry, while Niquita Amirkhanian was an Honorable Mention pick.
Galaska, Stoeffler named to Academic All-ICAA team
Tiffin's Vickie Galaska and Steffany Stoeffler were named to the Academic All-ICAA team. Galaska posted a 3.80 GPA in Business while Stoeffler has a 3.55 GPA in Forensic Psychology.
Ruiz named to Great Lakes Region team
Tiffin's Felicia Ruiz was named Second Team All-Great Lakes Region by vote of the region sports information directors. Ruiz, a sophomore from Medina, Ohio, played sweeper for the 11-6-1 Dragons in their first year of exclusive NCAA II competition. Tiffin was ranked as high as 10th in the Great Lakes Region during the season.
