TU announces Dragon Radio featuring three live events

Tiffin University is proud to announce the debut of Dragon Radio Live, a monthly radio program that will broadcast live from Madison Street Pub and Grub on Oct. 5 from 6-7 p.m. The show is part of a continuing partnership between Tiffin University and WMJK 100.9 FM and provides insight into Dragons Athletics as well as highlights the continuing development of the program and institution through the construction of the new  Recreation Center and other initiatives. Alumni and Friends of the University are invited to join in the fun of a "live" show. Doors open at 5 p.m.


WMJK is the home of Dragons football, broadcasting all 11 games while also providing an internet stream for fans to listen to abroad. Dragons Radio will be a monthly feature highlighting all Dragons Athletic teams along with their sponsors and supporters, with a total of three broadcasts being live events from local establishments. Future live broadcasts are scheduled for Nov. 16 at T.J. Willies and March 15 at Madison Street Pub and Grub. Voice of the Dragons Frank Barber, entering his 15th year working with Tiffin University, is the host of the show, while a wide variety of coaches, administrators, and players will receive exposure and provide interesting insight into Tiffin University.

Dragons sign three softball standouts to program

Tiffin University's softball program is pleased to announce the signing of three players. Miami East's Kelly Mayer, Hudson's Alyssa Brown, and Norwayne's Lesy Herbert have all selected Tiffin University to further their athletic and academic careers.

Mayer, a pitcher, hails from Casstown, Ohio. She is a All-Ohio and All-Conference player who was three-time team MVP. She posted a 17-4 record on the mound and a miniscule 0.61 ERA over 135 innings while fanning 160 batters. She also hit well, posting a .415 average. She is majoring in Homeland Security and is the daughter of Melvin and Carla Mayer.

Brown, a native of Hudson, Ohio,  helped lead Hudson to the Division I State Finals, where they were runner-up. She is a First Team NOC River Division and Northeast District pick who also landed spots on the Akron and Summit County All-Star teams. During her senior season she hit .334 with a .556 slugging percentage. She also earned All-NOC River Division and All-District honors as a junior. She is majoring in Sports Management and is the daughter of Jeff and Michelle Brown.

Herbert, a catcher/third baseman from Sterling, Ohio, posted a .466 average with an .868 slugging percentage and 5 home runs for Norwayne. She was a First Team WCAL pick. She is majoring in Criminal Justice and is the daughter of Jeff and Gina Herbert.

Total of 76 athletes earn Spring GLIAC Academic honors

Tiffin University had 76 spring athletes that landed GLIAC All-Academic honors, as the conference announced its spring academic honorees. Overall 565 GLIAC athletes were honored. Baseball (22) and Men's Track (23) had the most honored sports in the conference in their respective sports. For the complete list, click here.

Talmage earns First Team NFCA All-Region honor

Tiffin University's Delaney Talmage  was named a First Team All-Midwest Region Utility player by vote of the NFCA head coaches. This is the third postseason honor for Talmage, who earlier was named Daktronics Second Team All-Midwest Region as well as Honorable Mention All-GLIAC. Talmage led TU with 39 RBI and 17 doubles while hitting .307.

Mazzuca, Talmage named All-Region standouts

Tiffin University's Lauren Mazzuca (second base) and Delaney Talmage (utility) were named Second Team All-Midwest Region by vote of the Region's Sports Information Directors. Mazzuca, who had already been named Second Team All-GLIAC by vote of the conference coaches, led the Dragons in batting average with a .327 mark along with a team-best 50 hits and 37 runs scored. Talmage, an Honorable Mention All-GLIAC pick, led TU with 39 RBI and 17 doubles while hitting .307.

Dragons land three players on All-GLIAC team

Tiffin University's Lauren Mazzuca was named Second Team All-GLIAC as the 2009 conference softball honors were announced by vote of the GLIAC coaches. Mazzuca, a freshman, batted a team-best .327 with 50 hits and 37 runs scored in the leadoff spot. Tiffany Smith and Delaney Talmage also were named Honorable Mention selections. Smith led the team with 9 home runs while batting .321, while Talmage had 39 RBI and 17 doubles while batting .307.

Dragons season ends in 2-1 thriller

Tiffin University (23-25) had a classic pitcher's duel in the third round of the GLIAC tourney, as they fell to Grand Valley State 2-1 to end their season. Trailing 2-0 in the 7th inning, the Dragons rallied to load the bases with 2 outs. Delaney Talmage's walk made the score 2-1, but the Dragons could not get the clutch hit necessary to tie or win the game, leaving the bases loaded in the 7th. Krista Sowers allowed 5 hits over 6 innings, while Lauren Mazzuca had 3 hits. TU overall had just 4 hits on the day.

Dragons get run in 7th, eliminate Northwood 3-2

Tiffin University (23-24) broke a 2-2 tie on Tiffany Smith's single, and Krista Sowers pitched out of a jam in the bottom of the 7th as TU eliminated Northwood 3-2 in the second round of the GLIAC tourney. Sowers fanned 7 and allowed just 4 hits in getting the win. Smith also had a double. The Dragons now take on Grand Valley State at 10 am Saturday in round 3.

Dragons fall in GLIAC opening round on walk off homer 5-2

Tiffin University (22-24) picked up a run in the top of 7th inning to tie the game 2-2 in the opening round of the GLIAC tourney against Saginaw Valley State, but the Cardinals drilled a three-run walkoff home run in the bottom of the 7th to win 5-2. TU will now play Northwood in the consolation bracket at 2 pm. TU mustered just 4 hits in the game but held their own, as Krista Sowers tossed 6.1 innings and fanned 7 in the losing effort. Tiffany Smith had two hits with a double while Jessica Ramirez also had a home run. 

Dragons experience ups, downs in split with Lakers

Tiffin University (22-23) posted a 6-run 6th inning to sprint past Lake Superior State 12-4 in game one, but then allowed 4 runs in the 7th inning of game two, committing 5 errors in falling 6-2. Krista Sowers got the win in game one and the loss in game two. In the opener, Tiffany Smith drilled a grand slam, while Lauren Mazzuca had a two-run bomb and Delaney Talmage had two hits with a homer and 2 RBI. Kelsey Vincent had 2 doubles, Stephanie Bobotas had 2 hits, and Meagan Baird drove in two runs. In game two, Talmage and Jessica Ramirez each had solo home runs, but TU mustered a total of just 5 hits in the game.

Dragons lose on walk-off homer in rain-shortened doubledip

Tiffin University (21-22) held a 5-4 lead in the 6th inning but could not hold on, as Northwood drilled a two-run walk-off home run with two outs to win 7-5 in the first game of a doubleheader that was shortened by rain. Krista Sowers took the loss while Tiffany Smith had two hits. Lauren Mazzuca, Meagan Baird, and Tabbatha Nieman all had doubles.

Dragons drop pair of games in home finale

Tiffin University (21-21) nearly pulled off a comeback in the opener against Northern Kentucky, trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the 7th inning. The Dragons scored 3 runs with two outs and had the tying run at second base but could not get her home, falling 4-3. Krista Sowers took the loss while Tiffany Smith had 2 doubles for 2 RBI. Stephanie Bobotas also had 2 hits. In the finale, it was all Northern Kentucky, as they won 17-1 in 5 innings. NKU had 18 hits to the Dragons 2 hits. Smith drilled a home run for TU's lone run. Lexie Pinkleman took the loss.

Dragons win extra inning thriller, get split with Warriors

Tiffin University (21-19) scored two runs in the 8th inning, taking advantage of three Wayne State errors to win 4-2. Krista Sowers went the distance, scattering 5 hits for the win. Stephanie Bobotas had 2 hits while Delaney Talmage and Meagan Baird had RBIs. In the nightcap, TU committed three errors and allowed four runs in the 6th inning of a close game, falling 7-2. Lexie Pinkleman took the loss, allowing 4 earned runs in 5.1 innings. Bobotas had 2 more hits, while Talmage drove in both runs and Lauren Mazzuca had a double.

Sowers's one-hitter gains Dragons split with Lakers

Tiffin University (20-18) had another brilliant outing from Krista Sowers, as she tossed a complete game, 10-inning, one-hitter against Grand Valley State, with TU picking up the win 1-0. Tiffany Smith got the game-winning RBI with a sacrifice fly. Lauren Mazzuca had 2 hits while Delaney Talmage added a double. In game two, TU fell 5-0, as the Lakers got three runs in the first inning. Sowers took the loss, pitching the first four innings and allowing just 2 earned runs. Jessica Ramirez had 2 hits with a triple and Mazzuca added a double.

Sowers's gem earns Dragons split with 8th-ranked Bulldogs

Tiffin University (19-17) got a four-hit, complete game shutout from Krista Sowers as TU beat 8th-ranked Ferris State 2-0 in the opening game of the GLIAC twinbill. Sowers fanned 7 for the win, as TU scored one run in the first and one in the sixth inning. Jen Kramer had 2 hits, while Kelsey Vincent had a double for an RBI and Meagan Baird had another hit for an RBI. In the nightcap, the Bulldogs dominated play, scoring 10 runs in the 2nd inning en route to a 16-2 victory in five innings. They outhit the Dragons 17-5 while TU committed 5 errors. Abbey Cooksey took the loss, while Lauren Mazzuca had a triple and Tabbatha Nieman had a double.

Dragons allow 3 hits in twinbill sweep of Storm

Tiffin University (18-16) dominated play in another doubleheader against Lake Erie, winning game one 7-1 and taking game two 8-0 in 5 innings. In the opener, Lexie Pinkleman allowed 2 hits in the complete game win. Meagan Baird had 2 hits with a double for 2 RBI while Delaney Talmage also drilled a home run and had 2 hits. Lauren Mazzuca and Kelsey Vincent had doubles while Kenzie Kitchen and Jessica Ramirez also had two hits. In game two, Krista Sowers allowed just one hit in picking up the win. Talmage continued her hot hitting, getting three hits with a double and home run for 4 RBI. Mazzuca had 2 hits with a triple for 2 RBI, while Tiffany Smith and Kenzie Kitchen also had two hits. Kitchen, Pinkleman, and Ramirez all had doubles.

Dragons sweep Lake Erie to return to .500

Tiffin University (16-16) broke out the bats in game one, beating Lake Erie 12-1 by scoring 11 runs in the 6th inning, before getting solid pitching to beat the Storm 4-2 in the nightcap. In the opener, Krista Sowers got the win, allowing one hit. Delaney Talmage had a double and home run for 4 RBI while Kelsey Vincent drilled a grand slam. Jessica Ramirez had 3 hits, while Lauren Mazzuca had 2 hits with a home run. Maegan Baird also had 2 hits. In game two, Emily Kellepourey picked up the win with 4 innings of work, while Sowers came in for three innings of relief for the save. Talmage and Tiffany Smith had 2 hits to lead the Dragons, who trailed 2-0 early before scoring 3 in the fifth inning en route to the win.

Dragons drop pair of games to Warriors

Tiffin University (14-16) lost the opening game of a doubleheader with Wayne State 4-2, as the Warriors came back to score 2 runs in the 6th inning to tie and 2 runs to win the game in the 7th inning. Abbey Cooksey took the loss while Stephanie Bobotas had 2 hits. Kenzie Kitchen drove in two runs. In the nightcap, the Dragons committed 4 errors and managed just 2 hits in falling 9-1 in five innings. Krista Sowers took the loss, lasting just 1.1 innings and allowing 6 runs (3 earned).

Cardinals dominate Dragons at home in sweep

Tiffin University (14-14) couldn't handle Saginaw Valley State in a doubleheader loss, falling 11-1 and 8-0 in two five inning games that saw the Dragons collect a total of 3 hits on the day. In the opener, Abbey Cooksey took the loss, allowing 11 earned runs. Tiffany Smith hit a home run and Kenzie Kitchen had a double for the lone Dragons hits. In the 8-0 finale, Krista Sowers took the loss as Kitchen again had the lone single.

Dragons post road split with Oilers

Tiffin University (14-12) opened strong with a 10-2 win at Findlay, but couldn't hold a late lead in game two, falling 10-8. In the opener, Krista Sowers tossed a complete game two-hitter, while TU's offense banged out 14 hits. Lauren Mazzuca had 2 doubles, Tiffany Smith had a double and 3 RBI, Jessica Ramirez added two hits with a triple, and Delaney Talmage had 2 doubles for 2 RBI. Kelsey Vincent also had two doubles. In game two, TU came back to take a 7-5 lead in the sixth inning but Findlay scored 5 runs in the 6th inning to get the win. Sowers got the loss after 2.1 innings of relief. Talmage, Meagan Baird, and Smith all had 2 RBI, with Smith and Kenzie Kitchen also getting two htis each.

Dragons have rough outings at Ashland

Tiffin University (13-11) struggled at Ashland, falling 4-0 and 10-5 on a day where they collected just 5 total hits and committed 7 errors. Krista Sowers took the loss in game one, allowing 0 earned runs and scattering 6 hits as the Eagles scored 4 unearned runs in the 5th inning. In the nightcap, the two teams were tied 5-5 in the 6th inning when Ashland scored 5 runs to put the game away. Lexie Pinkleman took the loss, allowing 0 earned runs over 4.2 innings of relief. Delaney Talmage had two hits with a double and home run for 2 RBI.

Dragons post another split with Hillsdale

Tiffin University (13-9) posted another split with Hillsdale, as Krista Sowers got the win in game one 5-2 before Abbey Cooksey struggled in game two, falling 6-2. Sowers went 7 innings and battled through 7 walks for the win, scattering 5 hits. Lauren Mazzuca had 2 doubles, while Michelle Manley, Meagan Baird, and Delaney Talmage all had doubles. In the nightcap, Cooksey lasted just 2 innings and allowed 4 runs, as the Chargers scored 4 in the third inning to propel themselves to the win. TU mustered just 6 hits, with Talmage and Kenzie Kitchen stroking doubles and Tiffany Smith drilling a home run.

Three bombs in nightcap lead to split with Hillsdale

Tiffin University (12-8) got two home runs by Tiffany Smith and a home run and single for 4 RBI from Lauren Mazzuca as TU won the nightcap at Hillsdale 12-6. Stephanie Bobotas and Jessica Ramirez also had 2 hits, as Kellie Kitchen got the win with 4.2 innings of work. Lexie Pinkleman also pitched the final 2.1 innings of relief while also hitting a double. In the opener, TU held a 6-4 lead in the 6th inning but could not hold the lead, losing on a walkoff homer in the bottom of the 7th inning 7-6. Krista Sowers took the loss. Kenzie Kitchen had 3 hits for 2 RBI, Delaney Talmage had 2 hits with a double for 2 RBI, Mazzuca had 2 hits with a double, and Bobotas added 2 more hits.

Strong pitching leads to doubleheader sweep of Findlay

Tiffin University (11-7) got a 2-hit, 8 inning complete game victory from Kellie Kitchen as TU beat Findlay 2-1 to complete a doubleheader sweep of Findlay. TU won the opener 8-1. In the nightcap, Kitchen fanned 12 while TU scored the winning run in the 8th inning on a dropped fielder's choice. Jessie Creakbaum and Megan Baird had 2 hits each while Tiffany Smith had a double. Smith swung a big bat in the opener, driving in 5 RBI with 3 hits including a double and a home run as TU banged out 11 hits. Kristia Sowers went 7 innings and allowed just 5 hits and no earned runs. Delaney Talmage had 2 hits with 2 doubles, while Stephanie Bobotas and Lauren Mazzuca had 2 hits each. 

Sowers's shutout earns Dragons split with Clarion

Tiffin University (9-7) got a 2-hit, complete game shutout from Krista Sowers in a 2-0 game two win over Clarion. Sowers fanned 6 in the outing, while Tiffany Smith had 2 hits with a double and RBI. TU got its two runs in the first inning and watched as Sowers controlled the opposition. Game one was a different story, however, as Kellie Kitchen took a 1-0 shutout into the 7th inning but could not hold on as Clarion scored four runs to win 4-1. TU managed just 5 hits in the game, with Smith, Kenzie Kitchen, and Tabbatha Nieman getting doubles.

Dragons bats held in check as Ashland sweeps TU in GLIAC opener

Tiffin University (8-6) managed just 6 hits in two games against Ashland, falling in a narrow game one 1-0 before dropping game two 6-0. In the opener, Krista Sowers took the loss, allowing one run in the 7th inning for the tough loss. TU struck out 12 times in the game. In the nightcap, Abbey Cooksey lasted just 1.1 innings, as Ashland scored all 6 runs in the 2nd inning. TU again had just 3 hits with 11 strkeouts.

Dragons sweep on final Florida day

Tiffin University (8-4) shut out St. Rose 9-0 in 5 innings, scoring 5 runs in the 4th inning to break the game open before clipping Stonehill 3-1 to finish their Florida trip. In the opener, Lexie Pinkleman got the win, allowing just 2 hits over her 3 innings of work. Delaney Talmage, Megan Baird, and Kenzie Kitchen all had two hits, with Baird stroking a double. Tiffany Smith had 2 RBI and Jessie Creakbaum had a triple for 2 RBI. In the finale, TU got another strong outing from Krista Sowers, as she fanned 8 batters and allowed 2 hits in the complete game victory. Pinkleman, Kitchen, and Stephanie Bobotas all had 2 hits, with Bobotas hitting a triple for 2 RBI. Baird also had a double.

 

Sowers sets strikeout record in win over Upper Iowa

Tiffin University (6-4) benefited from a record-setting performance from Krista Sowers, as Sowers set a new career strikeout record in a 4-3 win over Upper Iowa. The Dragons, who trailed 3-0 early, came back, scoring the gamewinner in the 7th inning on a hit by Jessie Creakbaum. But it was Sowers who pitched well, fanning 7 in the complete game victory, breaking Stacy Ellinger's 16 year old mark of 426 strikeouts. Creakbaum had 2 hits in the game. In the nightcap, Indianapolis nipped the Dragons 3-2, coming up with 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning for the win. Abbey Cooksey took the loss while TU collected only 3 hits. Delaney Talmage had 2 of them with a double.

Ramirez strokes gamewinner in win over St. Cloud St.

Tiffin University (5-3) got a gamewinning single from Jessica Ramirez in the 5th inning as TU nipped St. Cloud St. 3-2 in the first of two games. Ramirez had two hits on the day as did Lauren Mazzuca and Megan Baird. Baird also collected a double. Abbey Cooksey was strong over 7 innings, allowing 2 earned runs. In the second game of the day, Chadron State took advantage of 4 Dragons errors to beat TU 7-2. Kellie Kitchen took the loss, pitching 7 innings and allowing only 3 earned runs. TU also struggled at the plate, collecting just 3 singles. Chadron State led 4-1 in the 7th inning before scoring 3 more runs to break the game open.

Dragons sweep pair of games with solid pitching

Tiffin University (4-2) got two complete game efforts from Krista Sowers and Abbey Cooksey, as TU beat Northern State 7-2 and Chadron State 4-2. Sowers got the win against Northern State, with Tiffany Smith getting two hits with a home run and double and Jessie Creakbaum adding two hits and a home run. In the seconde game, Cooksey got the victory as TU scored 2 runs in the 5th for the winning margin. Creakbaum added a triple.

Dragons bats come to life in earning split in Florida openers

Tiffin University (2-2) racked up 14 hits in a 12-7 win over Quincy in their second game of the day as they opened their Florida trip.  Lauren Mazzuca had 4 hits with a home run and double while Tiffany Smith had 3 hits with a home run to lead the way. Abbey Cooksey got the win in relief, tossing 5 innings to finish the game in relief of Krista Sowers. Delaney Talmage also had a double while Jessie Creakbaum had 2 hits with a double. Megan Baird also had 2 hits. In their first game of the day, the Dragons fell in a pitchers duel 3-0 to Northern Kentucky. TU mustered only 3 hits in the game, with Smith getting 2 of them with a double. Kellie Kitchen was the starter and took the loss, throwing 2 innings. Cooksey also pitched 5 innings in relief in the opener.

Tiffin University (1-1) got a big game two from Lauren Mazzuca, as she collected 3 hits including a double and a game-winning 7th inning home run as TU salvaged a split with Lincoln Memorial 4-3. Kellie Kitchen got the win in game two with 3 innings of relief, while Krista Sowers started the game, tossing 4 innings and allowing just 1 earned run. Jessie Creakbaum also had a double. The Dragons bats were slow to come to life in the opener, as TU fell 4-0 after getting just 2 hits. Abbey Cooksey took the tough luck loss, allowing just 2 earned runs and allowing 5 hits. TU committed 4 errors in the game, allowing the four runs over the final three innings of the game.

Dragons engage in community service

The Softball team continued their tradition of helping in the community last fall by helping at the Tiffin Cross Country Carnival on Sept. 6. The huge event, held annually at Hedges-Boyer Park in Tiffin, is one of the largest cross country carnivals in the state, and 15 TU softball players helped manage the event. The team helped with traffic control along with a number of other duties. The team looks to continue more community involvement in the future. 

Baird selects Tiffin to continue her softball career

Meagan Baird has selected Tiffin University to continue her athletic and academic career. Baird is a 2008 Canadian Nationals All-Star shortstop  who comes from Ajax, Ontario, Canada. She was selected for Team Ontario for the Canadian National team in 2009 and was J.Clarke Richardson Collegiate high school’s 2004 Female Athlete of the Year.
