Dragons season ends with 8-3 loss to Lewis at Regionals

Tiffin University (34-18) allowed 6 unearned runs in a tough performance, falling to Lewis 8-3 to end their season in the consolation round of the Midwest Region tourney. TU committed 3 errors, as Amber Young took the mound loss after 4 innings of work in which she allowed no earned runs. TU fell behind 5-0 but then rallied to score 3 runs in the fifth inning. Lewis bounced right back, adding three runs in the sixth inning to put the game away. Amanda Temple had 2 hits with a double, while Lauren Mazzuca drove in two runs with a double.

 

Late runs, errors sink Dragons in day one of Regionals 8-4

Tiffin University (34-17) fell behind 5-0 before battling back to a 5-4 score, but it wasn't enough as Ashland scored 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take an 8-4 decision on day one of the NCAA Midwest Regional at Ashland University. TU committed 5 errors in the game, falling behind 5-0 early. Kelly Mayer took the loss, tossing 3 innings and allowing just 1 earned run, but TU managed only 4 hits in the game. The biggest hit of the game came from Tiffany Smith, who set a new TU single season record with her 13th home run, a three-run shot that brought the Dragons to within 5-4 in the sixth inning. It was the lone extra base hit on the day for TU, however. TU now takes on Lewis University at 2:30 pm on Saturday. 


Dragons reach NCAA Regional tournament

The Tiffin University softball team has qualified for the NCAA Division II playoffs and will travel to Ashland University for one of the two Midwest four-team regional tournament.

 

TU (34-16) is playing in the Midwest Region.  Two four-team tournaments will be held in the region, Friday-Sunday, May 14-16.  AU is the top seed among the four teams that will gather at Brookside Park.  On Friday (May 14), Ashland will play Tiffin and Lewis will oppose Northern Kentucky. The top seed in the region overall is Wayne State.  The Warriors will host the other tourney in the region.  On Friday, WSU will play Quincy and Indianapolis will face Saginaw Valley State.  Indy is the defending regional champion.

 

This is the first time in school history Tiffin has qualified for the NCAA postseason in softball. They become just the second TU athletic team to make the NCAA postseason, following women's soccer in 2008. The Dragons are coached by second-year coach Jeff Nickerson while Ashland's Sheilah Gulas leads the Eagles (33-11) to the postseason for the eighth time.

 

The two winners from this coming weekend's tournaments will meet in the Super Regional, May 21-22, at the diamond of the top remaining seed.  The eight Super Region winners advance to the NCAA Division II World Series.

Huge day for Smith leads to sweep of Chargers

Tiffin University (34-16) got another great day from Tiffany Smith, as she totaled 7 RBI in two games over Hillsdale, including tying the single season record for home runs. In a 5-4 win in game one, Smith had 2 hits for 4 RBI, including a three-run bomb in the bottom of the fifth inning to put TU ahead for good. The shot tied the single season record of 12. Kelly Mayer improved to 9-3 with the win, going 6.1 innings while Lexie Pinkleman came in for the save. In a 9-5 game two win, Abbey Cooksey went 6.2 innings and allowed 2 earned runs for the win. She benefited from 15 TU hits, including 2 doubles from Smith for 3 RBI. Amanda Temple had 3 hits with 2 doubles, while Jessie Creakbaum added 3 hits for 2 RBI. Lesy Herbert drove in two runs with two doubles while Delaney Talmage also had 2 hits.


Dragons take two from Oilers

Tiffin University (32-16) got another relief victory from Kelly Mayer in a 13-7 victory over Findlay, then watched Abbey Cooksey spin a 2-hit gem in a 6-1 win. In the opener, Mayer tossed 2.1 innings of relief to close out the game as the last of three TU hurlers. TU trailed 6-5 but rallied to score 6 runs in the 6th inning. Delaney Talmage had 3 hits with a home run for 4 RBI, while Jessie Creakbaum had 3 hits for 2 RBI. Meagan Baird added 2 hits for 2 RBI while Tiffany Smith also had 2 RBI. In game two, Cooksey went the distance and allowed one earned run. Baird drove in 2 runs with a home run while Alyssa Brown, Talmage, and Lesy Herbert all had doubles.

Dragons' Mayer wins twice in relief in sweep of Northwood

Tiffin University (30-16) got relief victories twice from Kelly Mayer in 7-4 and 8-5 wins over Northwood. Mayer relieved Abbey Cooksey and pitched 3 innings in game one, benefiting from 3 Dragons runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. Delaney Talmage had two hits with a double for 2 RBI, while Lauren Mazzuca and Alyssa Brown also had two hits each. In game two, Mayer tossed 2.2 innings of relief, allowing one earned run in relief of Amber Young. The Dragons scored 3 runs in the top of the 8th inning, highlighted by Jessie Creakbaum's two-run home run. Talmage added two more hits with a double while Brown and Mazzuca had two hits apiece. Tiffany Smith and Meagan Baird also doubled.


Dragons stage comeback before blowout in sweep of Lakers

Tiffin University (28-16) staged a 3-run rally in the bottom of the 7th inning to pull out a 8-7 victory over Lake Superior State before turning up the offense in a 17-0 blowout in game two. In the opener, Delaney Talmage had a two-run double to win the game in the 7th. Kelly Mayer got the win with 5 innings of relief, allowing 2 earned runs. Tiffany Smith had two doubles for 2 RBI while Amanda Temple had 3 hits with 2 doubles. Alyssa Brown had 3 hits with a double for 2 RBI and Lauren Mazzuca had a triple.

In game two, Amber Young allowed just two hits in the shutout. TU exploded for 8 runs in the 4th inning. Smith had 4 hits with 2 doubles and a home run for 3 RBI while Mazzuca added 3 hits with a double and 3 RBI. Melodi Murrieta drilled a grand slam while Jessie Creakbaum had 2 hits.

Tiffin University (26-16) got a clutch 7th inning home run from Melodi Murrieta, giving TU a 4-3 win over Wayne State. Wayne State responded in the bottom of the 7th by putting runners on second and third but could not get them home, as Amber Young got the win allowing 2 earned runs over 7 innings. In the opener, TU fell 2-1 as Abbey Cooksey lost after 7 innings and 2 earned runs. Meagan Baird had 2 hits with a double and was stranded at second base in the 7th inning as TU fell short in their rally.


Dragons post another GLIAC split at Grand Valley

Tiffin University (25-15) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 7th inning to post a 5-4 win over Grand Valley State in game two. Amber Young got the win after 7 innings of work, while Alyssa Brown had 3 hits for 2 RBI. Melodi Murrieta had 2 doubles while Amanda Temple and Meagan Baird also had doubles. Stephanie Bobotas scored the winning run from third base on a throwing error by the shortstop. In game one, TU held a 4-1 lead but watched it dwindle away in a 5-4 loss. Lexie Pinkleman took the loss after 4.2 innings of relief. Brown had 2 more hits with a double for 2 RBI while Tiffany Smith also had 2 hits. Bobotas had 2 RBI and Baird added another double.


Dragons earn split with Ferris State in GLIAC matchup

Tiffin University (24-14) held on for a narrow 4-3 win in the opener at Ferris State, with Abbey Cooksey tossing 6 innings and allowing 5 hits while Kelly Mayer got the save. TU jumped out to a 3-0 lead before holding on for the narrow win. Alyssa Brown had 3 hits with a double while Tiffany Smith also hit a home run. Lauren Mazzuca and Amanda Temple also had doubles. In game two, Amber Young took the loss in a 4-1 decision, tossing 3 innings. Temple added 3 hits but the TU offense managed just 7 singles in the game as Ferris State took a 3-0 lead.


Talmage's two bombs lead Dragons to sweep of Panthers

Tiffin University (23-13) got two home runs from Delaney Talmage for 4 RBI, leading TU to a 6-0 win in game two against Ohio Dominican. Amanda Temple also had 2 hits while Meagan Baird added 2 RBI, making a winner of Amber Young's 7 inning, 5-hit effort. In game one, TU won 4-3, pushing across a run in the 6th inning. Abbey Cooksey got the win, going 7 innings. Lauren Mazzuca had 3 hits, Tiffany Smith had 2 hits, and Kelly Mayer drilled a home run.


Dragons rally to post sweep of Blue Knights

Tiffin University (21-13) trailed 4-0 at the start of game two against Urbana but rallied to score 5 runs in the 3rd inning and held on for a 7-6 win to secure a sweep of Urbana. Lexie Pinkleman tossed 4 innings and allowed one earned run while Amber Young came in and tossed 3 innings for the save. Tiffany Smith had the big hit with a 3-run triple and Lesy Herbert followed with a two-run home run. Amanda Temple had 2 hits for 2 RBI while Lauren Mazzuca had 3 hits. Jessie Creakbaum also had a double. In game one, Kelly Mayer pitched 7 innings and allowed one earned run in a 2-1 victory. TU took advantage of 3 Urbana errors, scoring an unearned run in the 7th inning for the win. Temple added 3 more hits with a double while Stephanie Bobotas had 2 hits and Mayer had a double.

Tiffin University (19-13) scored 2 runs in the fourth inning of the nightcap against Wayne State and then held on for a thrilling 4-3 victory to secure a split on the road. Leading 4-3 in the 7th inning, the Dragons threw out the tying run at home as Kelly Mayer pitched 3 innings of relief for the save. Amber Young got the win, tossing 4 innings and allowing 2 earned runs. Mayer added the lone extra base hit with a double. In the opener, Abbey Cooksey allowed 4 earned runs over 6 innings in a 5-1 loss. TU held a 1-0 lead into the 5th inning but could not hold on for the win. Tiffany Smith and Delaney Talmage had 2 hits each as TU totaled 5 singles in the game.


Dragons lose two close ones with Cardinals

Tiffin University (18-12) dropped two close games at Saginaw Valley State, allowing 2 runs in the 6th inning of game one to fall 7-3 before falling 3-2 in the nightcap. Abbey Cooksey allowed 3 earned runs in 6 innings. Amanda Temple had 3 hits with a double while Lesy Herbert hit a two-run home run. Lauren Mazzuca, Tiffany Smith, and Delaney Talmage all had doubles. In game two, the Dragons managed just 2 singles, losing a 2-0 lead. Amber Young took the loss.


Dragons blast past Lake Erie in sweep

Tiffin University (18-10) totaled 26 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Lake Erie. In the 14-6 opener, Amber Young got the win over 7 innings. Tiffany Smith drilled 2 home runs for 5 RBI, while Amanda Temple had 2 hits with a double for 4 RBI and Alyssa Brown had 2 hits for 4 RBI. Meagan Baird had 2 hits for 2 RBI while Lauren Mazzuca also had 2 hits. TU opened with 11 runs in the first three innings.

In game two, the Dragons won 12-2 in 5 innings. Lexie Pinkleman got the win after 3 innings of work, allowing 2 earned runs. Biard added 3 more hits with a double for 3 RBI while Smith also had 2 hits with a double for 3 RBI. Mazzuca, Temple, and Kelly Mayer all had doubles. 

Dragons turn up the offense in sweep of Oilers

Tiffin University (16-10) generated runs in bunches in two victories over Findlay, winning game one 9-4 and the nightcap 15-6. TU exploded for 6 runs in the sixth inning to put game one away and make a winner of Abbey Cooksey, who went 5 innings and allowed 5 hits and 3 runs. Kelly Mayer had a triple and home run for 2 RBI while Tiffany Smith had two hits with a home run and Lauren Mazzuca added a solo shot. Lesy Herbert had 3 hits for 2 RBI and Delaney Talmage also had 2 hits.

In game two, Cooksey also picked up the win, pitching 4 innings of relief and allowing 2 earned runs. The Dragons broke out for 7 runs in the second inning and then put the game away with 5 more runs in the sixth inning. Amanda Temple had two hits with a double and 4 RBI while Meagan Baird had two hits with a home run for 3 RBI. Alyssa Brown had 2 hits for 3 RBI, Lauren Mazzuca had 2 hits for 2 RBI,  and Tiffany Smith had two hits with another home run. Delaney Talmage had two hits and Kelly Mayer had 2 RBI. 

Dragons drop pair of games at Ashland

Tiffin University (14-10) couldn't generate enough offense to keep pace with Ashland, falling 7-3 in game one and 6-0 in game two. In the opener, the Dragons fell behind 5-0 to start the game behind 3 errors as starter Kelly Mayer took the loss after one-third of an inning. Tiffany Smith had 3 hits while Meagan Baird had 2 hits with a double. Alyssa Brown, Amanda Temple, and Stephanie Bobotas had doubles. In game two, Abbey Cooksey took the loss, allowing all 6 runs over 5.2 innings. Ashland scored four runs in the 6th inning to break open a close game, but TU could only manage 2 hits from Bobotas in the game.


Herbert's single gives TU split with Ashland

Tiffin University (14-8) got a huge clutch hit from Lesy Herbert in the 6th inning trailing 3-0, as Herbert singled to drive in 3 runs in a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Ashland. Amber Young went the distance for the win. Amanda Temple added a double. In the opener, Abbey Cooksey allowed no earned runs in a 3-0 defeat. Ashland scored all three runs in the 5th innings after two Dragons' errors. The Dragons also managed only three hits.


Dragons settle for split at Hillsdale

Tiffin University (13-7) got a win in game one behind Abbey Cooksey's 7 inning, 5-hitter, posting a 6-3 win but could not get the sweep, falling 4-2 in the nightcap. In the opener, TU tallied 3 runs in the fourth and 2 more in the seventh for the win. Lauren Mazzuca had 2 hits with a double for 2 RBI while Amanda Temple had 3 hits with a double. Stephanie Bobotas added 2 hits while Lesy Herbert also had a double. In game two, Amber Young took the loss, allowing 3 runs in the third inning. TU had a first-and-third situation with nobody out in the sixth inning but couldn't get the tying runs home. Temple added 2 hits with a home run for 2 RBI. 


Dragons offense shut down by Northern Kentucky

Tiffin University (12-6) managed just 6 hits in two losses at Northern Kentucky, falling 6-1 and 8-1. In the opener, Lexie Pinkleman took the loss, allowing 3 earned runs in 6 innings as TU managed just two singles. In the nightcap, Kelly Mayer allowed 8 earned runs in 6 innings. TU had four hits, with Amanda Temple getting two hits with a double.


Dragons post split with Panthers in two narrow decisions

Tiffin University (12-4) got strong pitching from Abbey Cooksey in a 3-2 win over Ohio Dominican. Cooksey allowed 5 hits and 1 earned run in the win. TU pushed across one run in the 7th inning for the win as Alyssa Brown singled home the go-ahead run after Lauren Mazzuca's triple. Mazzuca swung the big bat with three hits including a home run. Amanda Temple had 2 hits and Meagan Baird had a double.

In game two, Amber Young allowed just 3 hits but was undone by 3 unearned runs in the fourth inning.  Brown had 3 more hits with a double while Kelly Mayer and Stephanie Bobotas had 2 hits each. TU outhit ODU 9-3. Melodi Murrieta also had a double.

Dragons' Smith has big series as TU sweeps Clarion; Nickerson wins 200th game

Tiffin University (11-3) won their 10th game in a row, sweeping Clarion 6-1 in game one and 12-3 in 6 innings in game two. The offense banged out 23 hits in the twinbill, with Abbey Cooksey getting the win with 7 innings of work allowing 3 hits and 0 earned runs. Amanda Temple had 2 hits with a double for 2 RBI while Lauren Mazzuca had 2 hits with a double. Tiffany Smith also drilled a home run. The victory also gave Head Coach Jeff Nickerson his 200th career victory.

In game two, Kelly Mayer allowed just 4 hits in 6 innings as the Dragons totaled 11 runs over the last three innings. Smith had two hits with a double for 4 RBI and Alyssa Brown had 3 hits with a double for 2 RBI. Meagen Baird also had 3 hits while Lesy Herbert had 2 hits with a home run for 2 RBI. Mazzuca had a triple and Delaney Talmage added a home run. 

Dragons open up the offense in sweep of Malone

Tiffin University (9-3) put 22 runs up over 12 innings of play, beating Malone 10-1 in game one and 12-4 in game two. In the opener, Amber Young allowed one earned run over 6 innings with 8 strikeouts and just 4 hits for the win. TU racked up 9 runs over the fifth and sixth inning. Amanda Temple had 3 hits for 2 RBI, Tiffany Smith had two hits with a home run and 3 RBI, and Lauren Mazzuca had a double and home run. Alyssa Brown had two hits, Meagan Baird had a 2-RBI double and Delaney Talmage hit a two-run home run.

In game two, Lexie Pinkleman got the win with 2 innings of work, allowing one earned run with three hits. TU scored 9 runs in the fifth inning to put the game away. Tiffany Smith had a huge game, collecting a single, double, and home run for 5 RBI, while Temple added two hits for 2 RBI. 

Dragons run winning streak to six straight with another sweep

Tiffin University (7-3) picked up two more victories in Florida, beating Charleston 4-3 in 9 innings before downing Northern State 5-1. In the opener Amber Young started and allowed 3 runs in 2 innings. Kelly Mayer then came in in relief and tossed 6 shutout innings for the win. Amanda Temple led the way with a two hits including a home run and 2 walks while Tiffany Smith also had 2 hits with a double. In the nightcap, Abbey Cooksey went 7 innings and allowed no earned runs for the win. Smith drove in 2 runs with a double, while Temple added 2 more hits with a double and Stephanie Bobotas also had 2 hits. Lauren Mazzuca also drilled a double.

Dragons pick up fifth win in six tries in another sweep

Tiffin University (5-3) posted another doubleheader sweep in their second day in Florida, beating Wilmington (DE) 4-2 before beating Truman State 5-4. Lexie Pinkleman pitched the first four innings against Wilmington in picking up the victory, with Kelly Mayer tossing the final three innings for the save. Amanda Temple had 2 hits with a double to lead the offense. Against Truman State, Abbey Cooksey went the distance to get the narrow win. Melodi Murrieta had the big hit with a bases-loaded double to stake the Dragons to a 5-1 lead. 


Dragons pick up two wins in Florida openers

Tiffin University (3-3) opened its Florida trip with two wins, beating Slippery Rock 7-5 before downing St. Cloud St. 8-4. Amber Young got the win in the opener, coming in in relief in the 2nd inning and finishing the game. Melody Murrieta had 2 hits with a double while Amanda Temple had 3 hits. Against St. Cloud St., Abbey Cooksey went the distance for the win. Tiffany Smith had 5 RBI with 3 hits including a three-run home run. Meagan Baird had 2 hits with a double and Lesy Herbert had 3 hits with a double. 


Dragons bang out 13 hits for first victory in day two split

Tiffin University (1-3) picked up its first victory of 2010, beating Charleston 7-2 behind 13 hits and a strong mound outing by Abbey Cooksey. Cooksey went 6 innings and allowed 1 earned run as the Dragons scored 4 runs in the fifth inning to break it open. Amanda Temple led the offensive barrage with 3 hits including 2 triples for 2 RBI while Lesy Herbert also had 3 hits. Tiffany Smith had two hits with a home run for 2 RBI while Lauren Mazzuca also drilled a home run. Michelle Manley also had a double. In game two, TU's defense failed them as they committed 5 errors in a 6-1 loss to Newberry. Amber Young took the loss, allowing just 1 earned run in 3 innings. Alyssa Brown had 3 of TU's 5 hits with a double.

Tiffin University (0-2) failed to generate much offense in dropping  two games in their season openers. TU fell to Newberry 9-0 before falling to Limestone 7-1. In the opener, Abbey Cooksey took the loss, allowing 7 earned runs in 3 innings. Meagan Baird had 2 hits but overall the Dragons had just 4 singles. In game two, Kelly Mayer was the losing pitcher, allowing 3 earned runs in 4 innings. TU managed just 5 hits, with Baird and Tiffany Smith getting doubles. 


TU announces Dragon Radio featuring three live events

Tiffin University is proud to announce the debut of Dragon Radio Live, a monthly radio program that will broadcast live from Madison Street Pub and Grub on Oct. 5 from 6-7 p.m. The show is part of a continuing partnership between Tiffin University and WMJK 100.9 FM and provides insight into Dragons Athletics as well as highlights the continuing development of the program and institution through the construction of the new  Recreation Center and other initiatives. Alumni and Friends of the University are invited to join in the fun of a "live" show. Doors open at 5 p.m.


WMJK is the home of Dragons football, broadcasting all 11 games while also providing an internet stream for fans to listen to abroad. Dragons Radio will be a monthly feature highlighting all Dragons Athletic teams along with their sponsors and supporters, with a total of three broadcasts being live events from local establishments. Future live broadcasts are scheduled for Nov. 16 at T.J. Willies and March 15 at Madison Street Pub and Grub. Voice of the Dragons Frank Barber, entering his 15th year working with Tiffin University, is the host of the show, while a wide variety of coaches, administrators, and players will receive exposure and provide interesting insight into Tiffin University.

Dragons sign three softball standouts to program

Tiffin University's softball program is pleased to announce the signing of three players. Miami East's Kelly Mayer, Hudson's Alyssa Brown, and Norwayne's Lesy Herbert have all selected Tiffin University to further their athletic and academic careers.

Mayer, a pitcher, hails from Casstown, Ohio. She is a All-Ohio and All-Conference player who was three-time team MVP. She posted a 17-4 record on the mound and a miniscule 0.61 ERA over 135 innings while fanning 160 batters. She also hit well, posting a .415 average. She is majoring in Homeland Security and is the daughter of Melvin and Carla Mayer.

Brown, a native of Hudson, Ohio,  helped lead Hudson to the Division I State Finals, where they were runner-up. She is a First Team NOC River Division and Northeast District pick who also landed spots on the Akron and Summit County All-Star teams. During her senior season she hit .334 with a .556 slugging percentage. She also earned All-NOC River Division and All-District honors as a junior. She is majoring in Sports Management and is the daughter of Jeff and Michelle Brown.

Herbert, a catcher/third baseman from Sterling, Ohio, posted a .466 average with an .868 slugging percentage and 5 home runs for Norwayne. She was a First Team WCAL pick. She is majoring in Criminal Justice and is the daughter of Jeff and Gina Herbert.

Total of 76 athletes earn Spring GLIAC Academic honors

Tiffin University had 76 spring athletes that landed GLIAC All-Academic honors, as the conference announced its spring academic honorees. Overall 565 GLIAC athletes were honored. Baseball (22) and Men's Track (23) had the most honored sports in the conference in their respective sports. For the complete list, click here.
