Dragons finish high in national rankings 

Tiffin University's men's program finished 11th in NCAA Division II in the final national power rankings according to the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association poll, while the women's team ended the season ranked 26th. Both teams are preparing to send over 20 athletes to the NAIA and NCAA National Championships next week.   

Dragons continue trek to Nationals

Tiffin University men’s and women’s track teams competed at five separate meets this weekend, with three school records being broken and six new qualifying marks for the national NAIA and NCAA meets. At Wheeling Jesuit, Dan Snyder set a school record in the decathlon with a mark of 5988, qualifying him for the NAIA tournament. Andrea Bader qualified for NAIA’s in the 200m run with a time of 25.09 at Cedarville, while Christine Moyer (159’9) and Pat Manders (1:52.16) qualified for both NAIA and NCAA in the hammer throw and 800m run events, respectively. Both Bader and Manders set new school marks in their respective events. In Illinois, Chad Roberts qualified for the NAIA championships with a time of 3:56.82 in the 1500m run, while Jeremy Lee qualified for the US Junior National Championships with a time of 3:58.03.  

Dragons excel at Hillsdale meet  

At the 41st annual Hillsdale Relays held at Hillsdale College, three school records were broken and six national qualifying scores were achieved. Andrea Bader broke the school record and qualified for the NAIA national meet in the 200m dash with a time of 24.40, besting her previous mark of 25.75. Ikenna Obonna won the triple event at the meet with a mark of 14.81m, establishing a new school record and qualifying for both the NCAA and NAIA national meets. Pat Manders broke the school’s 800m run record with a time of 1:52.98, also qualifying for both national meets.  Jason Werling’s 53’ throw in the shot put event was also a qualifying mark for both meets. Also qualifying for the NAIA national meet were Chad Roberts in the 5000m run with a time of 14:55 and Mike Ballistrea in the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.53.

Dragons men win 4th staight AMC title, women third

At the AMC Track & Field Championships, held at Houghton College, the Tiffin men’s squad won their fourth consecutive AMC outdoor title and swept the individual awards. Coach Jeremy Croy was honored as the AMC Men’s Coach of the Year, senior Thomas Nims was named the Men’s Athlete of the Meet, and senior Jason Werling was named the Men’s Field Athlete of the Meet. Nims won the 200m dash in 21.91 and the long jump event with a leap of 7.06m, while finishing second in the 100m dash (11.02) and third in the triple jump competition (13.44m). Werling won the discus throw (47.79m) and hammer throw (50.11m) events in addition to a second place finish in the shot put (16.36m).  Chad Roberts set a new meet record in the 10,000m run with a time of 31:12.88, with other event winners including: Zach Ball (11.02) in the 100m dash, Mike Ballistrea in the 400m hurdles (54.09), Ikenna Obanna in the triple jump event (14.50m), and the 4x100m relay team with a time of 42.42. Other top men’s finishers at the event include: a second place finish for Ball in the 200m dash (22.05); Pat Manders finishing second (48.26) and Chad Johnson fourth (49.98) in the 400m dash; Thomas Buxton in eighth place in the 800m run (1:56.95); Jeremy Lee in eighth place in the 1500m run (4:01.97); Roberts (3rd – 15:19.23), Andrew Belzer (5th – 15:49.84), and Jeremy Lee (8th – 16:07.19) in the 5000m run; John Greathouse (3rd – 15.66), Dan Snyder (7th – 16.64), and Riley Morman (8th – 16.73) in the 110m hurdles; Belzer (2nd – 9:40.23), Chris Finn (4th – 9:54.88), and Kurt Olson (5th – 10:10.11) in the 3000m steeplechase; Keith Reiter (4th – 4.55m) and Eli Nichols (5th – 4.55m) in the pole vault event; Ryan Speakes (2nd – 6.75), Kasey Messmer (5th – 6.54m), and Obanna (6th – 6.51m) in the long jump event; Speakes in second (14.08m) and Snyder in sixth (12.78m) in the triple jump; and Snyder finishing fourth in the javelin throw competition with a mark of 48.40m. 

On the women’s side, the team finished a close third (153.50 points) behind last year’s winner Malone College (195.50) and this year’s champ Cedarville (230.50). Senior Chelsea Shelnick broke the meet record in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:02.99, while also finishing second in the 100m hurdles (15.00), third in the 400m dash (57.68), and eighth in the 200m dash (27.75). The 4x100m relay team also set an event record with a time of 48.75. Sophomore Andrea Bader won the 100m dash with a time of 12.43 and finished second in the 200m dash with a 25.75 time, while other event winners include Christine Moyer in the hammer throw (43.06m) and Melissa Jones in the discus throw (40.40m). Dragons compete at Miami meet  

At the Miami University of Ohio Invitational the Tiffin squad squared off against top regional competition from every NCAA Division.  The women’s team placed 12th out of 14 teams, ahead of Division I Wright State and Division II Northern Kentucky. Top finishers for the women include: Andrea Bader in the 100m (13.23) and 200m (26.97) dashes, Kristen Ameling in the shot put (12.14m), Melissa Jones in the discus throw (34.82m), and Kathy Kernen in the hammer throw (43.52m).  The men’s team placed 6th out of 11 teams, finishing just behind AMC foe Cedarville and local rival Findlay. Top finishers for the men include: Ryan Speakes in the 200m dash (23.92), Thomas Buxton in the 800m run (1:58.66), John Greathouse in the 110m hurdles (15.36), Michael Ballistrea in the 400m hurdles (54.14), and Jason Werling in the shot put event (14.57m). Three Dragons placed high in the long jump competition: Thomas Nims in fourth place (6.42m), Ikenna Obanna in sixth (6.25m), and Kasey Messmer in seventh (6.18m). Obanna and Nims also placed high in the triple jump event, finishing with scores of 13.97m and 12.96m, respectively.  The 4x100m relay team of Zach Ball, Speakes, Dan Snyder, and Nims finished third in the event with a time of 43.17.  

Dragons reach new high in Division II rankings

Tiffin University's men's program reached another new height in the latest Division II national rankings, rising from 5th to 3rd overall. The Dragons trail only Western State (CO) and Adams State in the national rankings. Tiffin's women's squad continues to hold at 9th in the nation.  

Dragons stand out at Marietta event 

Both men’s and women’s squads continued their team dominance, earning the top team marks again at the Don Frail Invitational held at Marietta College. Event winners on the women’s side were: Andrea Bader in the 100m (12.45) and 200m (26.07) dash events, Maria Shaw in the 400m dash (1:01.26), Chelsea Shelnick in the 400m hurdles (1:04.32), Stephanie Viener in the 3000m Steeplechase (12:50.33), Katrina Schumacker in the long jump (5.06m), Kristen Ameling in the shot put (12.09m), Melissa Jones in the discus throw (35.91m), Christine Moyer in the hammer throw (44.29m), and the 4x100 relay team of Bader, Jessica Duncan, Shaw, and Schumacker with a time of 49.97.

The men’s event winners include: Zach Ball in the 200m dash (22.41), Pat Manders in the 400m dash (51.34) and 800m dash (2:01.18), Randy Terrell in the 1500m run (4:13.84), Jeremy Lee in the 5000m run (15:48.80), John Greathouse in the 110m hurdles (14.99), Michael Ballistrea in the 400m hurdles (56.20), Vincent Freedman in the 3000m Steeplechase (10:43.94), Keith Reiter in the pole vault (4.57m), Thomas Nims in the long jump (7.01m), Jason Werling in the shot put (15.52m), and the 4x100 relay team of Ball, Dan Snyder, Nims, and Ryan Speakes with a time of 43.34.

Dragons take top honors at Emory Invite

At the Emory Invitational in Athens, Georgia, both the men’s and women’s squads dominated Division II opponents and earned the top team scores at the event. For the women, Chelsea Shelnick finished first in the 100m hurdles (15.20) and 400m hurdles (1:02.03), Jessica Clark won the 10k run (39:37.10), and Brittany Galloway (1.51m) and Amy Buck (1.51m) placed second and third, respectively, in the high jump event. Andrea Bader finished second in the 100m dash finals (12.49) and third in the 200m dash (26.16), with Katrina Schumacker (10.21m) placing third in the triple jump, and Kristen Ameling (13.32m) winning the shot put event, followed closely by Cara Roach (11.68m) and Kathy Kernen (10.94m). Kernen (37.13m) and Melissa Jones (38.92m) placed in the top four in the discus throw, while Christine Moyer (44.44m), Jones (41.75m), and Kernen (41.10m) took the top three spots in the hammer throw. Also, the Tiffin 4x100 relay team placed first with a time of 49.71.

The men’s event winners include: Pat Manders in the 400m dash (48.88), Jeremy Lee in the 1500m run (4:03.39), Chad Roberts in the 5000m run (15:15.87), Andrew Belzer in the 3000m Steeplechase (9:28.16), Ikenna Obanna in the triple jump (13.84m), Jason Werling in the shot put (15.60m) and hammer throw (47.61m) events, and the men’s 4x400 relay team (3:18.63). Other top finishers for the Dragons include: Keith Reiter (4.40m), Eli Nichols (4.25m), and Brett Reiter (4.10m) placing in the top five of the pole vault competition; Mike Ballistrea placing second in the 400m hurdles (54.54); and Donald Graber finishing second in the hammer throw (43.29m).

Dragons achieve highest ever outdoor ranking 

Tiffin University's men's and women's outdoor track programs achieved their highest ever Division II National rankings in the latest power rankings. Tiffin's men's program was ranked 5th in the nation, while the Lady Dragons placed 9th in the country. (Rankings)   

Obanna, Ameling, Shelnick star at Tiffin Open

Four Tiffin athletes earned NAIA qualifier status at the rain-soaked Tiffin Open held on Friday. Ikenna Obanna’s qualifying mark of 14.48m in the triple jump event was the lone national mark for the men’s team as he also qualified for NCAAs, while Kristen Ameling qualified in the shot put event with a mark of 13.13m. Dragons open outdoor season at Cincinnati 

The outdoor track season began with strong performances by both the men’s and women’s squads at the Cincinnati Open. The invitational team host, the University of Cincinnati, won both the men’s and women’s overall scores, but the Tiffin men finished in a close second place out of eight teams and the women finished in third behind only UC and IPFW. Personal records were set throughout the event for both Dragon squads, which won a combined six events. John Greathouse qualified for both the NCAA and NAIA championships in the 100m hurdles, with a time of 14.45. Chelsea Shelnick was the lone qualifier on the women’s side, but did so in both the 100m and 400m hurdle events. Other NAIA qualifiers on the men’s team include: Michael Ballistrea in the 400m hurdle (54.10), Ikenna Obanna in the triple jump (14.22m), Jason Werling in the shot put (15.36m), Chad Roberts (15:09.46) and Andrew Belzer (15:10.13) in the 5000m run, and the 4x4 relay team of Chad Johnson, Ballistrea, Marcus Johnson, and Pat Manders with a time of 3:19.85. 

Dragons compete at NAIA National Championships

The Track & Field teams closed out the indoor season by setting three new records at the NAIA Championships.  Josh Montenaro broke his own school record in the 3000m race walk with a time of 16:20.61, placing him 14th at the event. Thomas Nims broke the school long jump mark with a 7.20 meter jump, placing him third in the event and earning all six of the team’s points for the weekend. Chelsea Shelnick set a school record in the 60m hurdles with a 9.01 semi-final run, finishing in 7th place and missing the finals by .01 seconds. Shelnick also placed 11th in the 600m run with a time of 1:38.42.

Other participants for the women’s team include: Kristen Ameling placing 9th in the shot put event with a throw of 12.25m, Brittany Galloway placing 14th in the high jump event with a score of 1.60m, and Katrina Schumaker placing 17th in the long jump with a 5.11m jump. The 4x400m team of Maria Shaw, Andrea Bader, Chelsea Shelnick, and Maddie Aurand finished 12th in the event with a time of 4:00.19, placing higher than their initial seed.

On the men’s side, Keith Reiter’s pole vault of 4.65m placed him 7th in the event, while John Greathouse’s time of 8.51 placed him 15th in the 60m hurdle competition and Jason Werling finished 13th in the shot put with a throw of 15.65m.  Eli Nichols (9th place) and Dan Snyder (14th) both competed in the heptathalon event, while Ikenna Obanna (14.09m) and Ryan Speakes (13.91m) placed 13th and 19th respectively in the triple jump.  Chad Roberts placed 27th in the 5000m run with a time of 15:37.79, while both Zachary Ball and Pat Manders were disqualified in the 200m dash.  The 4x400 team of Michael Ballistrea, Chad Johnson, Marcus Johnson, and Pat Manders placed 16th with a time of 3:20.68, also finishing higher than their initial seed.

Dragons head to National Championships 

The Tiffin University Track & Field teams will send 30 athletes to the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships this weekend at Johnson City, TN. On the men’s side, 21 athletes will be competing in 11 events over the course of three days. Senior Pat Manders will complete his collegiate indoor career in the 600m run (season best 1:21.67), as will: Josh Montenero in the 3000m race walk (17:03.50), Thomas Nims in the Long Jump competition (22-09.25), Ryan Speakes in the triple jump (46-04.75), and Jason Werling in the Shot Put event, whose throw of 52-02 set a Tiffin record this season. Zachary Ball will compete in the 200m dash after setting the school record in the event this season with a time of 22.35. John Greathouse will compete in the 60m hurdles after posting a 8.25 time during the season. Eli Nichols and Dan Snyder will both compete in the heptathlon, with overall scores of 4108 and 4371, respectively. Chad Roberts will compete in the 5000m run, where he holds the second best time in school history at 15:10.36, while school record holders Ikenna Obanna (47-03) and Keith Reiter (15-05.50) will face off against national competition in the triple jump and pole vault events, respectively. The 4x400m relay team also qualified for the championships with a time of 3:23.04, with Chad Johnson, Marcus Johnson, Michael Ballistrea, Kyle Faerber, and Adam Nunns representing the team in the event.

The women’s track and field team brings nine participants to the championship event, including the 4x400m relay team of Jessica Duncan, Andrea Bader, Maddie Aurand, and Maria Shaw, who qualified with a time of 4:04.72. Senior Chelsea Shelnick will compete in the 60m hurdles (season best 9.05) and 600m run (1:37.14); Shelnick holds the school records in both events in addition to her school bests in the 400m, 500m, and pentathlon events. Junior Katrina Schumacker will compete in the long jump competition with a qualifying mark of 17-04, with sophomore Kristen Ameling competing in the shot put event (40-01.25) and freshman Brittany Galloway competing in the high jump (5-06). The indoor season has seen numerous records broken – eight new men ’s records and ten women’s – in addition to the school’s highest rankings in NCAA competition, as the men finished 18th in the country and the women 25th. 

Dragons men, women finish with highest ever rankings 

Tiffin's men's and women's indoor track teams finished their indoor season with their highest ever final national rankings. The men equaled last year's final ranking of 18th in the nation, while the women finished 25th. Their previous best ranking was last year at 35th. Dragons men, women dominate at Ohio Northern 

At the Friday Night Series Invitational, hosted by Ohio Northern University on Friday, the Men’s and Women’s Track and Field squads both posted impressive team wins and established some new individual records. On the men’s side, the team won the ten team competition with 294 points, easily defeating the host team Ohio Northern (131 points) and blowing away the rest of the competition. The men’s squad won eleven events during the invitational, including Zach Ball in the 55m and 200m dash, Pat Manders in the 300m and 400m dash, Michael Ballistrea in the 500m run, and Ryan Speakes in the Triple Jump. The 4x200 relay team of Speakes, Ball, Dan Snyder, and Thomas Nims set the school record with a time of 1:31.58, while John Greathouse qualified for NCAA Nationals and set a new school record in the 55m hurdles with a time of 7.72. Jason Werling broke school marks in the shot put event (15.9m), which qualified him for NCAA Nationals, and in the weight throw (15.72m), which qualified for NAIA Nationals.

On the women’s side, the Lady Dragons also won the ten team competition, edging host team Ohio Northern by a 237-220 mark. Tiffin won 12 events on the day, including Andrea Bader in the 200m dash, Chelsea Shelnick in the 300m dash and 55m hurdles, Maria Shaw in the 400m dash and long jump event, Jessica Clark in the 5000m run, Brittany Galloway in the triple jump event, Kristen Ameling in the shot put event, and Christine Moyer in the weight throw competition. Bader also qualified for NAIA Nationals in the 55m dash with a time of 7.37, setting a school record with her run, while Shelnick broke the school record in the 500m run with a time of 1:19.84.

The indoor season wraps up for both teams at the NAIA Indoor Nationals at Johnson City, TN, and the NCAA Indoor Nationals at Boston, MA, held over the March 8-10 weekend.

Dragons enjoy superb weekend at two meets

Records fell and season best performances were made during a busy weekend for the men’s and women’s track and field squads. At Ohio Northern, Josh Montenaro qualified for the NAIA national meet in the 3000m racewalk, setting a school record with a time of 17:02. At the Hoosier Hills Invitational, held on Indiana University’s campus, Zach Ball broke the school record in the 200m dash with a time of 22.35, which also qualifies him for the NAIA national meet. Joining him with qualifying times at the Invitational were: Michael Ballistrea with a 50.40 time in the 400m run; Pat Manders with a time of 1:21.67 in the 600m run, and Chelsea Shenick with a time of 59.2 seconds in the women’s 400m run.

At the Kent State Tune-Up, the women’s team saw three records fall and numerous season best times set. Maria Shaw’s long jump of 5.35m broke the school record and qualified her in the NAIA, while the 4x400 relay team of Shaw, Chelsea Shelnick, Andrea Bader, and Maddie Aurand qualified with a time of 4:03.12. Jessica Clark broke the school mark in the 5000m run with a time of 19:15.91, and Angela Betterley broke the school record in the 300m hurdles with a time of 51.42. Shelnick also qualified in the 600m run with her time of 1:36.69. Additional season best marks on the women’s side were: Jessica Duncan in the 55m dash (7.61) and 200m run (27.81); Betterley in the 55m hurdles (9.83); Aurand in the 400m run (1:03.89); Kat Zvansky in the 5000m run (19:56.05); and Casey Neal in the Weight Throw event (9.62m).

On the men’s side, Ikenna Obanna qualified for both NAIA and NCAA Division II meets with a school record 14.4m score in the triple jump event. Chad Roberts NAIA qualifying time of 15:07.16 in the 5000m run placed him second in the event, and Jason Werling qualified for the NAIA meet in both the shot put (15.7m) and the weight throw (15.45m). A number of Dragon athletes set season best marks at Kent State. TJ Nims in the 200m dash with a time of 22.27. In the 300m run both Ikenna Obanna (36.77) and Mike Romain (39.83) set season marks, as did Jason Shelnick in the 300m hurdles (43.43). In the 600m run, James Carlson (1:26.86) and Eric Pettigrew (1:29.42) set personal bests for the season, as did Charles Faerber in the 800m run (2:07.24) and Randy Terrell in the 800m and mile run (4:34.12). In the 1000m run, Vinny Freedman (2:37.92) and Adam Nunns set season bests, as did William Kyttle (9:09.21), Kurt Olson (9:14.23), and Shawn Kunkle (9:44.97) in the 3000m run, and Andrew Belzer (15:34.96), Jeremy Lee (16:12.64), and Chris Finn (16:15.99) in the 5000m run. Cameron Lewis set a personal best in the weight throw (11.02m) competition, as did Donnie Graber (12.76m), who also set a new season mark in the shot put (13.4m).

Tiffin ranked in power rankings   

Tiffin's men's and women's indoor track teams are threatening to finish with their highest Division II ranking ever with two weeks remaining in the indoor season. The men are currently ranked 14th. They finished 18th last season. The women come in ranked 22nd in the nation, with a finish of 35th last season.

At the All-Ohio Indoor Track & Field Championships, held at Bowling Green State University, three Tiffin athletes earned qualifier status for the NAIA Championships, with one earning NCAA qualifier status.  Katrina Schumacker earned NAIA provisional status in the women’s long jump event and finished in tenth place at the meet with a jump of 5.28 meters. John Greathouse’s time of 8.65 seconds earned him NAIA automatic qualifier status in the 60 meter high hurdle event. In the pole vault, Keith Reiter took first place in the event and set a school record with a vault of 4.71 meters. Reiter earns automatic qualifier status for the NAIA and provisional status for the NCAA. 

At Iowa State University, members of the men’s track team competed against solid Division I competition and earned three more NAIA provisional qualifications. The 4x400 team of Pat Manders, Chad Johnson, Marcus Johnson and Mike Ballistrea earned NAIA provisional qualifier status with a time of 3:21.04. Manders also earned provisional status in the 600 meter run with a time of 1:13.53, placing twelfth in the event.  Chad Roberts’ time of 8:47.77 in the 3000 meter run also earned him provisional qualifier status for NAIA competition.

Tiffin competes at NCAA DII Challenge  

At the NCAA Division II Challenge, held at the University of Findlay over the February 2 & 3 weekend, the Dragons saw strong showings from both the men’s and women’s teams. Junior Zachary Ball set school records in both the 60m dash (6.97) and 200m run (22.55), finishing second and fourth respectively at the event. Ball earned NAIA provisional qualifier status in both events. Ikenna Obanna earned NAIA provisional qualifier status and NCAA automatic qualifier status in the triple jump with a 14.26m performance. Thomas Nims long jump of 6.94m earned him provisional qualifier status for NAIA competition, as did Keith Reiter in the pole vault event (4.57m) and Jason Werling in the weight throw competition (15.23m). Sophomore Thomas Buxton set a personal best in the 800m run at 1:59.53.

On the women’s side, Chelsea Shelnick finished fourth in both the 60m dash (9.06) and 400m dash (59.70), while Maria Shaw placed fourth in the long jump (5.21m) and sixth in the 200m dash (26.81). Other notables include Jessica Duncan, who recorded a 8.15 time in the 60m dash and Brittney Galloway, who finished in sixth place in the high jump competition (1.68m).

Dragons compete at Alltel Open    

At the Alltel Classic held at the University of Findlay, senior Chelsea Shelnick finished fourth overall in the 600m run at 1:40.24, but was the top collegiate performer in the event beating out competition from Saginaw Valley, Cornerstone, Bowling Green, and other colleges in the Great Lakes region. Freshman Dan Snyder finished fourth in the 60m high hurdles (8.43), while three Dragons earned NAIA provisional qualifier status with their performances. Seniors Pat Manders (1:23.13) and Andrew Belzer (8:47.96) qualified in the 600m and 3,000m runs, respectively, while junior Chad Roberts (15.30.70) qualified in the 5,000m run.

Dragons teams nationally ranked in Division II  

Tiffin University's men's and women's indoor track programs were ranked highly in latest NCAA Division II powe rankings. The men's team earned a ranking of 5th in the country, while the women landed in the 16th spot. Complete rankings can be found here.   

Ball, Werling set new records at Kent Open  

Tiffin University's Zachary Ball (22.21, 200 m) and Jason Werling (51-4, shot put) set new school records as the Dragons competed at the Kent Open. Five other Dragons qualified provisionally for the NAIA National meet, while the men's 4x400 relay team also qualified with a time of 3:22.02. Individuals qualifying were Andrea Bader (7.98, 60 m), Ball (7.03, 60 m), John Greathouse (8.38, 60 hurdles), Dan Snyder (8.59, 60 hurdles), and Brittney Galloway (5-3, high jump).  

Dragons shatter records at Oiler Open  

Tiffin University's Indoor track program got their 2006-07 season off on the right foot, breaking numerous school records. Brittany Galloway hit 1.68 meters in the high jump VIEW HERE, setting a new school record and topping Division II leaders in the event. Andrea Bader broke another TU record in the 60 meters with a 7.90, hitting the NAIA provisional mark in that event and the 200 meters (26.25). Chelsea Shelnick capped off the women's highlights with a school record in the 400 meters (59.70, NAIA provisional qualifier) and another NAIA provisional mark in the 60 meter high hurdles (9.17). In the men's events, Zack Ball broke a school record and provisionally qualified in the 60 meters (7.02), while TU also got provisional marks from Ryan Speakes (45-10, triple jump), John Greathouse (60 meter hurdles, 8.45), Dan Snyder (60 meter hurdles, 8.65), and Jason Werling (50-6, shot put).
