Brooke Bernabei led the Dragons with 11 kills, 12 digs, and 3 blocks, while Margaret Betz had 8 kills and Brittany Teaford had 7 kills and 3 blocks. Tiffin University dropped the first two sets to visiting Lake Erie College, but the Dragons rallied and won the next three sets en route to their first home win of the season. In the first set, both teams were tied at 23-23, but the Storm would take the next two points sealing a 25-23 victory. The next set was again tied at 23. Lake Erie would take the next point, but the Dragons would answer it to knot the game up at 24. Lake Erie would once again score the next two points to take the second set and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Dragons
would dig down deep, however, and win the next three sets. Once again,
with a 23-23 tie the Dragons and Storm would trade points to eventually
tie the set at 25. TU would score the next two points picking up a
27-25 victory. The Dragons dominated set 4, 25-14, to force a set five.
In the final set, the Dragons took a 12-11 lead, a lead they would
never relinquish to earn the set 15-13. “We played pretty well in games
four and five. The kids worked really hard, and you could tell they
really wanted it at the end,” TU Coach T.J Shouse said.
Even with the win, Shouse still pointed out the fact that the Dragons need to cut down on opponent’s big runs.
“The thing that’s kind of been
our snakebite all year has been the inconsistency and giving up runs,
and again we showed that today. We showed that if we’re consistent with
our effort than we’re going to be able to prevail and play some good
volleyball. It’s nice for us to get the win and end this streak we’ve
been on, but at the same time hopefully it’s a reflection for us to see
what we need to do to get better and win some games,” he said.
Brooke
Bernabei and Brittany Teaford had 23 and 22 kills respectively. Jessica
Adams dished out a game high 57 assists. Amanda Marquardt had 33 digs
while Bernabei and Ashley Begeman had 16 and Adams had 12.

Dragons drop five-game heartbreaker to Lakers
Tiffin University won the first and fourth sets against visiting Lake
Superior State, but couldn’t keep the momentum as the Dragons fell to the
visiting Lakers in five sets. The Dragons started the match with a
25-22 victory before dropping the next two 14-25 and 18-25. The Dragons
would force a set five after a 25-17 victory, but fell in the finale
12-15. The loss drops the Dragons to 1-12 overall and 0-4 in the GLIAC.
Brittney Teaford had a solid day for the Dragons, recording 18 kills while Brooke Bernabei chipped in with 13 kills. Jessica Adams handed out 38 assists on the day. Bernabei had 18 digs to lead the team, and teammates Amanda Marquardt and Nikki Cranick contributed 15 and 14 digs respectively.
Dragons inconsistency costs them against Cardinals
Amanda Marquardt served an ace to start out TU’s volleyball match with
Saginaw Valley State University, but things would go downhill from
there as the Dragons fell in three sets to the visiting Cardinals. The
Dragons (1-11, 0-4 GLIAC) dropped the first set 13-25. In the second
set the Dragons again looked like they were going to be stuck on
unlucky 13, but put together an 11-0 run to tie the Cardinals at 24-24.
The Dragons, however, could not keep the momentum as SVSU scored the
next two points to take the set 24-26. The Dragons would drop the third
set at 13-25. Margaret Betz and Brooke Bernabei each had 5 kills
for the Dragons. Jessica Adams handed out 11 assists while Marquardt
had a team high 11 digs.

Tiffin University’s volleyball team took a set from GLIAC South preseason favorite Hillsdale, but couldn’t keep pace with the Chargers falling 6-25, 26-24, 15-25, 13-25 at home. The Dragons started set number one on a good note when Brittany Teaford slammed a kill to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead. The Chargers went on a 9-0 run from that point and took the first set 25-6.
However, the Dragons rebounded and
played strong in set two and outlasted the Chargers 26-24. TU looked to
be well in control holding a 24-19 advantage, but after a Hillsdale
time out the Chargers scored five straight points to tie it up at 24.
TU took the next two points to win the set.
Hillsdale (8-1) then
responded taking the next two sets for the victory. Brooke Bernabei had
11 kills for the Dragons, while Teaford contributed with 8. Jessica
Adams recorded 23 assists to go along with 11 digs. Lindsay Heller
added 14 digs.
Although the loss drops the Dragons to 1-8, Coach T.J. Shouse saw some things the Dragons can build off. “That’s the first time we showed what we are capable of,” he said of the Dragons’ victory in match number two. “The big runs still hurt and we must minimize that. This is a new starting point and (next game) we’ll have a chance the way we can.” The Dragons will get that chance Tuesday when they travel to Ashland.

Team Camp Information Headquarters (here)
Dragons team camp boasts largest numbers ever
The area around Tiffin University’s Gilmor Student Center was packed this past weekend for the start of the 2009 team camp held by the Women’s Volleyball Team. This year proved to be the largest and most successful camp to date. Over eight sites were used around the Tiffin area with at least two courts going at most sites. Sixty two teams showed up for the event with 36 Varsity teams and 26 Junior Varsity teams from all around the Ohio area. Not only were the numbers impressive but the caliber of teams that showed up were really what made the camp fun to watch.
“The teams that have registered for this camp are top contenders within their conference. We have teams that are making it to district, regional and even state level of playoffs in their high school seasons. The amount of matches they receive against the type of competition they find here is a great opportunity for any high school program,” said TU Head Coach TJ Shouse.
All the teams competed in four different pool play sessions over three days and ended the weekend with a competitive playoff bracket. TU’s volleyball staff would like to congratulate this year’s Varsity winner Lexington High School and Findlay #1 as the JV winner in the camp. For more information or to register for next year's camp please contact Head Coach TJ Shouse at ShouseTJ@tiffin.edu.
Howard named Assistant Coach for volleyball squad
Jill Howard has been named Tiffin University's Volleyball Assistant Coach. “Jill’s experiences as a player and coach in Ohio made her stand out among the seventy applicants we received,” said Head Coach T.J. Shouse. “Her enthusiasm and knowledge for the game made her the right person for our program.” Howard is originally from Fairborn, Ohio, where she was an accomplished high school athlete. Her athletic and academic successes led her to Division III Hiram College, and while she began her college career as a setter, she finished as a highly decorated libero. Twice during her career the Terriers made the NCAA tournament, and Howard graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education while holding the school’s career records for digs and service aces. Howard served the last two years for Division III Marietta College as the Women’s Volleyball Assistant Coach, with the Pioneers posting a 16-17 record in 2008. Howard will join the Dragons on May 1st, 2009, and will work as the team’s Recruiting Coordinator, along with primarily working with the team’s setters and defensive specialists.
