Science with licensure in Middle School Education

A combination of the love of science and the love of learning can bring middle school students a love of education. Learn how to create a foundation for students’ future with an array of TU science classes that can bridge the gap between content and the love of the field. Combine this degree with an English, math or history concentration to expand your reach to students.  

Tiffin University has established an innovative partnership with Lourdes University that allows TU students to study and major in education without leaving the Tiffin University campus. Teacher credentialing and certification will be handled through the School of Education at Lourdes University. Meanwhile, the general education curriculum and the content specialization in science are taught by Tiffin University faculty.


This program provides all coursework for a degree in science, one teaching area chosen from English, mathematics or history; and license requirements for Middle School Teaching credentials for grades 4-9.

Education for Young Adolescents (EDM210) - Fosters an understanding of the unique developmental needs and aspects of young adolescents. This course will examine not only the history and philosophy of middle school education but will explore exemplary practices, which are characteristics of effective middle childhood education.

Middle Childhood Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment (EDM235) - Building on the general concepts presented in EDM210 Education for Young Adolescents, this course begins to bridge the gap between content and practice. The course examines middle childhood curriculum and provides an in-depth review of the Ohio Academic Content Standards. The course introduces instructional models and elements of assessment theory in support of curriculum development and effective teaching. Students have opportunities to plan, teach, assess and reflect on lessons for young adolescents that are developmentally appropriate and inclusive.

Middle Childhood Methods & Field Experience I (EDM250) - Provides students with opportunities to learn and practice the skills and competencies of effective teaching at the middle childhood level. This course will examine various instructional methods used to teach young adolescents in all four curriculum content area and reading. The course includes a field experience in a middle childhood setting. 

Language Arts and Social Studies Methods and Field Experience II (EDM351) - Provides students with opportunities to learn and practice Middle Childhood pedagogy in your licensure areas (language arts and social studies). Students will engage in all elements of the Teacher Performance Assessment, including planning instruction and assessment, instructing and engaging students in learning, assessing student learning, and final retrospective reflection. The course includes an extensive field experience in a Middle Childhood setting for both of your licensure areas. This course must be passed with a C+ or better. Falling below a C+ will result in the need to retake the course.

Teresa Collins, Ph.D.

A native of Findlay, Dr. Terry Collins joined the Tiffin University faculty in 2005. For twenty-five years prior to that, she served as a U.S. Army bandsman at installations throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. She also has the distinction of being the first woman to integrate the Military Band Program. For the past several years she has worked as a classroom teacher in both music K-12, English 6-12, and as an adjunct lecturer at the University of Maryland, Central Texas College, Tabernacle Baptist Bible College & Seminary, and Old Dominion University.

Robert Stover

Professor Robert Stover earned a B.A. in Math Education form Capital University and a M.Ed. from the University of Pittsburgh.  He is currently the Teacher Education Coordinator for Tiffin University and also teaches in the education program.

Professor Stover is professionally affiliated with NCTM, OCTM, PCTM, and PADI.  He has much experience in both teaching and administration at the K-12 educational level and has presented at the OCTM Fall conference in both 2013 and 2014.

His hobbies include scuba diving, white water rafting, solving math problems, and enjoying life as a grandfather.
