Real Resources Make For Real Opportunities: Technology For Your Use On Campus
There are multitudes of ways to make real connections at Tiffin University, and one of these ways is through technology. Below is an overview of the real resources available to TU students, under the helpful watch of the Information Technology Services (ITS) Office.
University Computer Labs
Tiffin University and the ITS Office currently have four computer labs, of which two are available for general student usage. One lab is located in the Hertzer Technology Center (2nd Floor), and the other is located in the lower level of the Main Classroom Building. Each lab has the latest in Dell Workstations and both contain flat screen monitors. All labs are equipped with Microsoft Office, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Frontpage. Students can complete their assignments, surf the Internet, utilize the laser printer, or use some of the other specialized software located in the lab.
Specialized Labs
Tiffin University has special use labs for specific and more intense discussion of computing and their powers. A Technology Lab exists where students take apart computers, build networks, and learn how to crimp cable. The university also has two TECs (Technology Enhanced Classrooms), which have 40 of the latest Dell Workstations, with flat screen monitors. This classroom is used for instruction of a wide variety of classes from introductory computer courses to Accounting and Criminal Justice courses.
Internet Connections
TU has started to add network connections in widely used areas so the campus community and students can take their laptop and plug directly into the Internet. Pfeiffer Library has six Ethernet connections in the carrels on the 1st Floor. Students who have a laptop with an Ethernet card can connect to the network. In addition, the Gillmor Student center has Ethernet connections in the central lounge for student use. Wireless Internet Access is also available in more than half of the university buildings, and will soon be available through the entire campus. Please note that students wishing to use the wireless network are required to fill out a form at the ITS Office.
Multimedia
The ITS Office has a wide variety of multimedia capabilities available across the TU campus. This includes color scanners, color laser printers, and digital recording mediums. The ITS Office also loans out media equipment such as digital cameras (both video and still). All students need to do is get authorization from the faculty member giving the assignment, and then take the sheet down to the ITS Office. ITS also has several video editing machines for high quality and intense media production.
Intranet (MyTU)
The Tiffin University Intranet/Portal (MyTU) is a source of information for anyone logged into the Tiffin University Network – be it in the labs, or dialing into the network from home. The Intranet/Protal contains a list of extensions for campus phone numbers, the cafeteria menu, and pages for classes. The TU community is encouraged to send in news or events around campus to be posted on the Intranet so students know what is going on at the campus. If you are accessing your email from dial-in or the dorm, you will use the Intranet to get to WebMail, a way of checking your email from the Net.
If you have any questions about the technology available to the Tiffin University community, please call the ITS Help Desk at (419) 448-3430, or call (800) 968-6446 and ask for the ITS Help Desk. We’re for real!
