Up in the Air
"My experience as a member of Up in the Air has really been life-changing. Beyond the ability to tour around the country, work with amazing professional artists, travel abroad and spend time in the recording studio as part of a professional-type band, my experience with the group has taught me a lot about how to achieve success in the music business or as part of any group or organization.
"My senior project was another incredibly valuable experience -- for my final course in the major, I planned, produced and performed in my very first professional solo show, which I gave in a theatre in my hometown. Over a period of several months, I solicited sponsorships and promoted the show, chose all the music and wrote the arrangements, hired and rehearsed with the band, and oversaw all the elements that go into producing a public concert. Though it was a lot of work, and at times really stressful, I never could have learned more if I would have had a dozen music business courses.
"I've also served on the Concert Production Team, Audio Engineering Team, and worked in support of TU's annual Jazz and Vocal Festivals. This kind of real-world experience that Tiffin University has given me has prepared me really well for future successes as I pursue my own musical and entrepreneurial future as a singer and performer."

Marching Auxiliary

"During all four years of my undergraduate career, I have been involved in several facets of Tiffin University’s Music Department. Not only have I had ample time for my coursework, but I’ve also been given the opportunity to participate in the marching band’s flag corps and TU’s student-led winterguard.
"Flag corps has been one of the most enjoyable parts of my involvement in the Tiffin University Music Department. After being an active participant in my high school’s flag corps, I have been able to continue my involvement and even receive scholarship money for participating. Since my freshman year at TU, the flag corps continues to increase in participants and expand its resources. The corps does not just use flags—we spin, dance, and use a variety of different props. The marching band always plays an exciting show incorporating a variety of musical genres, which allows our flag corps to come up with really innovative routines. We’ve been able to spin to Stevie Wonder, 80’s tunes, and even some hard rock songs.
"In 2008, some of the flag corps students wanted to be able to continue their involvement in the winter season, so we started a student-led winterguard. The creation of TU’s winterguard has served as an additional resource for the flag corps students by giving us the chance to stay in shape while practicing indoors.
"The best and most unique thing about Tiffin University’s Music Department is that it allows me to participate in the musical activities I enjoy without pursuing a major in Music. Unlike a majority of other universities, I am able to receive scholarship money to be involved in the flag corps while still pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in my preferred area of study."

Concert Production Team
"The Tiffin University Music Department strives to utilize all the talents and skills of its students, as well as cater to their interests. After several students expressed interest in taking a larger role in the production of musical events on campus, the Music Department created the Concert Production Team. The development of this organization has allowed the students to contribute their individual skills in order to bring the campus and the community together through music.
"The Concert Production Team is structured just like a business organization, and each aspect of production is overseen by a Manager, whether it be Finance, Stage Production, or Marketing. Each manager must complete their duties as well as collaborate with fellow managers and committee members to complete certain tasks on time. The biggest reward is watching all the hard work pay off at each event we produce—both on campus and in the community.
"I have found my involvement in the Concert Production Team both personally and professionally beneficial. In serving as both the Production Manager and the Publicity Manager, I have been given the opportunity to see what it’s like to produce an event from behind the scenes—designing flyers, organizing meetings, and writing and distributing press releases. This “real life” experience has not only prepared me for the working world by strengthening my interpersonal communication and leadership ability, but it has also allowed me to take my love for music and share it with both my fellow TU students and the members of the Tiffin community."
