DESCRIPTION:On November 16\, 2022\, Tiffin University’s undergraduate student chapter of the Ohio Innocence Project (OIP-u:TU) will host guest speaker\, Robert McClendon at 7 p.m. in the Osceola Theater. McClendon was wrongfully charged and convicted of kidnapping and raping his 10-year-old daughter and spent 17 years in prison for crimes he did not commit. \nMcClendon steadfastly maintained his innocence\, but the courts denied him the right to a DNA test three different times. The Ohio Innocence Project got involved after working closely with reporters from the Columbus Dispatch in 2007 and 2008 to evaluate cases where the defendant was wrongfully convicted and denied DNA testing. He was freed on August 12\, 2008 when an Ohio lab conducted a DNA test that definitively proved McClendon’s innocence. \nMcClendon’s story is about failures of the criminal justice system\, the power of investigative journalism and continued racial discrimination that he faced after his release from prison.

Yahya has survived five wars and has authored a children’s book and\, in 2018\, a collection of poetry [You Are a Window\, They Are Clouds]. His poems and award-winning stories have been anthologized and appeared in newspapers and magazines in Palestinian Territories and internationally. He has taught creative writing and literacy skills to both children and adults at various community organizations in Gaza. \n \nHe will speak about growing up in Gaza\, surviving war\, his works\, and we will read some of his poems.

DESCRIPTION:Tiffin University will host a mock voting day for elementary youth on November 8 in the Heminger Center on TU’s campus. \nThe event will involve a mix of 217 fourth and fifth-grade students from Calvert\, Hopewell-Loudon and Mohawk. A total of 11 polls will be set up in the Heminger Center with students voting on a variety of topics such as favorite foods\, colors and other topics. The exercise will highlight the importance of voting on Election Day. \nThe event will begin at 9:15 a.m. and will also feature Assistant Professor of History Michael Goodnough who will speak on the importance of participating in voting. \nThe results of the student vote will be revealed at the Tiffin University-Findlay football game on November 12 at noon. All participating students are welcome to come to the game and will be recognized prior to the game. At 11:30 a.m.\, the students will meet in a tent at Frost Kalnow Stadium. They will then be escorted to the game field for recognition and to see the results of their vote.
