SUMMARY:Shifting Gears: Understanding the Psychology of Social Adaptability
DESCRIPTION:Human beings are remarkably adaptive. In different environments such as classrooms\, workplaces\, families\, or peer groups\, we often shift how we speak\, behave\, and present ourselves in order to meet social expectations. This capacity\, known as social adaptability\, is a fundamental aspect of human interaction. While adaptability can promote 1 connection\, belonging\, and success\, it may also generate internal tension when individuals feel pressured to consistently adjust who they are. Importantly\, our social identities; such as race\, gender\, socioeconomic background\, disability\, mental health\, neurodiversity\, and cultural heritage\, influence how and when we adapt. For some\, these shifts may feel minor and situational\, while for others they may involve more significant changes tied to navigating bias\, stereotypes\, or systemic expectations.  \nThrough a mix of lecture\, discussion\, and reflection\, students will:  \n\nDevelop strategies for balancing adaptability with authenticity to support psychological well-being and healthier relationships.\nConsider how diverse identities\, mental health\, and neurodiversity shape the experience of social adaptability.\nAnalyze both the advantages and potential costs of frequent adaptation in various contexts.\n\nBy the end of the session\, participants will better understand social adaptability as a natural and complex human process\, as well as its implications for identity\, resilience\, and mental health.

This event is free and open to all members of the Tiffin community.\n\nShari and Cory Foltz will share their son Stone’s harrowing experience through fraternity hazing\, his tragic passing and the crucial warning signs we all need to recognize. They advocate passionately for change — to ensure that no one is left behind. Together they created the iamstonefoltz FOUNDATION\, which is committed to raising awareness about the dangers of hazing and fostering a culture of safety\, respect and responsibility. This presentation offers a valuable opportunity to explore the foundation’s mission and understand the crucial role each of us plays in preventing hazing within our communities.\n\nHailing from Sunbury\, Ohio\, Stone Foltz was a bright\, aspiring entrepreneur enrolled in Bowling Green State University’s business program. In a heartbreaking turn during his sophomore year\, Stone tragically lost his life to alcohol poisoning March 7\, 2021\, three days after a fraternity hazing event.\n\nDRAGON Family – you are invited to make a real difference and forge a safer\, more supportive environment for everyone. Together\, we can bring about the change that is so desperately needed.

Forty million- plus in physical record sales and a billion song streams later\, DMC still continues to create music\, inspire through his books and motivate with speaking engagements.
