Before “Rent,” there was “Tick, Tick… Boom!” The autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson, the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning composer of “Rent,” is the story of a composer and the sacrifices that he made to achieve his big break in theatre. Containing fourteen songs, ten characters and five actors, “Tick, Tick… Boom!” takes you on the playwright/composer’s journey that led to a Broadway blockbuster.
Larson’s girlfriend wants to get married and move out of the city, his best friend is making big bucks on Madison Avenue and yet, he is still waiting on tables and trying to write the great American musical. Set in 1990, this compelling story of personal discovery is presented as a rock musical filled with instantly appealing melodies and a unique blend of musical theatre styles.
“Tick, Tick… BOOM!” serves as a reflective piece, offering an unflinchingly honest glimpse into the struggles and triumphs that shaped Larson’s artistic journey. Through the lens of his experiences, we explore the age-old trial of balancing personal dreams with societal expectations and the constant ticking of time. Audiences will love this youthful, endearing and thoughtful piece, and will surely embrace the universal ideal of holding onto your dreams through life’s most difficult challenges. DeLong said, “It has been wonderful to work with the casts as they find their own interpretation of the material. Everyone has approached the subject matter with the appropriate level of respect when needed, or with humor and levity when that is called for. They have been working hard and making smart acting choices, and I look forward to sharing their work with our audiences.”
