How to Study Abroad in College: Opportunities for TU Students

Studying abroad is a powerful way to grow as a student, professional and global citizen. For many college students, spending time in another country can be one of the most rewarding and transformative parts of their college experience. When you study abroad, you gain academic credit, but you also develop confidence and cross-cultural understanding. You might explore global business practices, dive into international art and history or learn a new language – all while navigating daily life in a brand-new place.

At Tiffin University, we believe that education should extend beyond the classroom. Our study abroad programs are designed to help you take your learning further. With multiple options across Europe, South America, Asia and beyond, TU students have the chance to see the world while staying on track with their academic goals. Whether you want to explore for a summer or immerse yourself for a full semester, we have several study abroad opportunities for you to choose from.

What Is Studying Abroad?

Studying abroad means completing part of your academic coursework in another country while still earning credit toward your degree. These programs are usually designed to align with your university’s curriculum so you can continue progressing toward graduation while gaining valuable international experience.

Living and Learning in a New Culture

When you study abroad, you’re not just visiting a new country; you’re becoming part of the community. You’ll learn how to navigate everyday life in a new culture, from riding public transportation to shopping at local markets. These day-to-day experiences help build independence, problem-solving skills and cultural awareness.

Personal Growth and Career Benefits

Studying abroad has a lasting impact both personally and professionally. It challenges you to adapt, think critically and see the world from new perspectives. You’ll build resilience and gain a better understanding of how different societies function. These are skills that employers value, especially in today’s global workforce where cross-cultural communication and collaboration are essential.

How to Study Abroad

Studying abroad is an exciting opportunity, but it takes planning to make it a reality. From choosing a destination to understanding credit transfers, here’s how to take the next steps toward your international experience.

Step 1: Talk to Your Academic Advisor

The first step in planning to study abroad is meeting with your academic advisor. They can help you understand how studying abroad fits into your degree plan and which terms work best for your major. Some programs may have prerequisites, so it’s important to plan ahead and make sure your coursework stays on track.

Step 2: Explore Program Options

Once you know when you can study abroad, start exploring your options. Think about where you want to go and what subjects you’d like to study. You can choose between short-term, summer or full-semester programs. Some offer courses in English while others may encourage language immersion.

You’ll also need to consider housing options. Would you prefer to live in student housing, with a host family or in an apartment with roommates? These details can really shape your experience, so it’s important to know your options.

Step 3: Apply and Finalize Plans

Before applying to a study abroad program, make sure you meet the eligibility requirements. At Tiffin University, students must:

  • Be in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (if you’re applying to the Oxford Programme, you’ll need a minimum GPA of 3.5 and an additional faculty recommendation).
  • Have achieved junior or senior status and completed at least three full-time semesters at TU.
  • Receive recommendations from both the Dean of Students and your faculty advisor.
  • Be enrolled full-time with at least 12 credit hours.
  • Complete the Study Abroad Program application form and collect all necessary signatures. Submit the signed form to the Registrar and provide a copy to the Coordinator of Cultural Immersion.
