Without music, life would B-flat.

Do you have a passion for music but don’t want to major in the art? Don’t close the book on your music career just quite yet. You can still play an instrument, sing or take lessons in college while majoring in what you want. Over half of our students that participate in the arts have a major that isn’t music.

Choose from a variety of extracurricular arts programs at Tiffin University, including a cappella groups and cover bands to a hip hop collective and a songwriting ensemble. These groups perform and record extensively, giving you plenty of opportunities to showcase your talent. Many opportunities are local, but some groups tour across the country and even overseas.

One of our acclaimed a cappella ensembles, Up in the Air, toured Europe in August 2019. They performed in England and Italy, with two concerts in London and a performance at the Vocalmente A Cappella Festival in Fossano, Italy.

While in Italy, Up in the Air also participated in the festival’s Vocalmentor program. Tiffin University students were paired with professional vocalists for intensive three-day workshops. Mentors included members of some of the most important vocal ensembles in the world, including The Real Group from Sweden and The Swingles from London.

During their time in London, Up in the Air gave two performances – one at the Soho Club and another at hClub, both exclusive Covent Garden private clubs. They also partnered with Nicola Jane Buttigieg, a composer of West End musical theatre productions. Up in the Air contributed to two of her projects. The first was the launch of a beatbox notation system, and the second collaboration was the debut performance of an original song.

The European trip marked the end of a huge year for the group. In 2019, Up in the Air was featured on XM Radio, opened for Michael McDonald, did extensive tours through Ohio, Indiana, and Virginia, spent time in the studio and performed at the East Green Amphitheater in town.

“Performing in Europe was an amazing, life-changing experience,” said Mishele Matlock, a 2020 graduate and former member of Up in the Air. “I learned so much about professionalism and working in the industry.”

Like Mishele, you can also continue to build your love of music at Tiffin University. At TU, we support performing and visual arts in much the same way colleges support their athletic programs by rewarding student talent with scholarships. All students involved in our art programs, regardless of academic major, are eligible. Scholarships are available to all singers, instrumentalists, dancers, emcees, beatmakers, beatboxers and those interested in the art team, production or media broadcasting.

Without music, life would B-flat. Consider joining an extracurricular art program at TU. For information about scholarships, degree programs and non-major performing opportunities, contact or 419.448.3366.
